Application led October 20, 1916, Serial No. 126,676. Renewed July 31, 1917.
To all whom it may concern.'
. Be it known that I, GEORGE G. BABIGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coffin-Boxes, of which the following, is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to con boxes, and has for its object to provide an improved metal inclosure for caskets especially adapted for use when the casket is to be inclosed in a plastic casing, such as is disclosed in my Patent No. 1,153,535, issued September 14, 1915, but which may also be advantageously employed for incasi'ng any casket for burial. A special object is to provide a metallic casing which will preserve the casket from contact with the plastic material of the outer casing disclosed in the above mentioned patent or with any other surrounding material. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this speciication, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description,
In the accompanying drawings, whereinsimilar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a detailed plan view of the metal coiiin box.
. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section n the line II-II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front end elevation showing the closure partly raised, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line IV-IV'of Fig. 1.
The metal coflin box 23, is preferably made up of a plurality of transverse sections 230 having their edges overlapped, as at 37, and forming the sides and top of the coffin box. |The bottom 38 of said coffin box is made in a single piece, and the ends of the transverse sections 230 are secured to the edges of the bottom piece 38 by solder or strips 39 making a water tight joint.' The overlapping edges of the transverse sections 230 are cov- Specification of Letters Patent.

ered by bands or strips 24 which also make water tight joints between them.
One end 40 of the con'vin box is permanently closed and sealed, while the other end is provided with a removable closure 27 adapted to slide in grooves 26 formed in the side walls of the coffin box, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. lhe lower edge of the closure 27 is adapted to fit in a groove formed by the flange 25 at the bottom of the other end of the cotlin box. The upper edge of the closure 27 is provided with a turned over ange 2S which serves as a handle for moving the closure into and out of position. After the coffin has been placed in the coffin box, the closure may be soldered or otherwise sealed in closed position.
By making the sides and top of the coflin box in transverse sections ywith overlapping edges covered by the bands 24, the structure is made very strong and capable of resisting the pressure of the concrete which is placed around it when used with the plastic' outer casing, shown in my patent hereinbefore mentioned. This rugged construction of the coffin box also renders 1t capable of resisting considerable outside pressure of earth when used without the plastic outer casing. Each of the bands 24 isstepped, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, to lit the overlapped edges of the sections 230. The thicker portions of said bands engage the underlapped sections, while the thinner portions of said bands engage the overlapped sections, thereby sealing the lapped joints and reinforcing the sides and top of the coflin box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A metal coffin box consisting of a bottom, transverse sections forming the sidesV and top of the box and having their ends secured to the bottom and their edges overlapped upon one another, bands covering the overlapped edges of said transverse sections, each of said bands being stepped to fit said overlapped edges, the thicker portions of the bands engaging the underlapped sections and the thinner portions thereof engaging the overlapped sections.
2. A. metal coiiin box having an upwardly 2 i A v 1,259,063
grooves and a closure adapted to slide inV said grooves and have its lower edge engage the Harige on the bottom, said closure hav-A l ing a turned over horizontal flange at its upper edge adapted to overlap Asind lie flat on the top of the coflin box when closed,
whereby said closure may be readily soldered 'i all around to the Collin boX.
In testimony whereof I have sighed my name to this specication. Y
" Y GEORGE Gr. BABICH.
