ALFRED lITTIG, 0E' RCHESTER, lillllit .Application filed .'enuery *7,
.To all; whom L 'may concern.'
Be it known. that l, lineman lil, Vilvrrio, e subject oit the Emperor of Germany, and resident of Rochester, in the county ofliion roe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmproveinente in Signals, o1 which the 'following is n specilicotion. y
' This invention relates to signals. lt is; intended :tor attachment to e motor-vehicle so that it can operated by the driver, and its object is te indicate to others the direction in which the vehicle is about to turn.
Signals' for this purpose have been tried end used to seine extent, but have been incre or less cumbersome und complicated, ecce.- pying space on the vehicle requ' d 'for other purposes. The invention in question cenepect in forni., inconspieueus when not in use, cheep to manufacture, and may resulily' attached to or detached from e, vehicle.

tuile invention; sind El is e bottone View Thesignel proper con t oit lazytongs 5 adapted to lioloeo Within easing ii, supported on one end of :i bincl-iict 7 that in turn is adopted t he elmuped to the sidetube 8 oit' o Wind-shield, such is orilinariljv used on inotorfvehicies, eo that it niejv reed il)l be detached therefrom. The Side of the casing i that is; nearest the clamp 7 is tubuhir in cross-section, as indicated by the numeral 9, and Within this tubular portion n cylindrical block l0 is adapted 'to nieve in e. vertical path. @ne member of the lazytongs 5 piveted to the block l0 and other member is nivoted to the easing G et l2.
l/Vhcn the device is notl in use the luzvtongs 5 lie Within the easing tl, :is indicated by the dotted lines in ligg. l. und when the indicator is in use the lezytongs ure extended ne shown in full lines in Figi', i, so :is to be visible to the driver et :i vehicle olvoroueh` in g from behind. The extension of the luster tongs 5 accomplished by the depression et e plunger 13 that is slidebly mounted ou :i poet i4; which is port of :i clamn-brzieket 15. Thi?)y bracket is attached to the seeringg column. l@ ot the vehicle. or in some other position cohvenienti);7 within refieh of the driver. @ne end ei. n etitl' Wire 17 is timid th ereoiL Specification of Letters Patent.

the e i ation of the plunger i3 moves the bloei:v i0 doivniv eti-diy, causing the lazy-tongs ii to be retrffietcd Within the casing 6. lin its retracted poration tl e, device is ineenspicuone, nl because of its attachment to the Wind-shiehl it occupiee n space Aon the vehicle which isi seldom required i'or other purposses.
'llo rei i d er th et nig-"ht n i signal or indicator visible l; :in incandescent bulb 19 supported n. e hood E20 on a portion of the clampour. et. 7', which niftybe in line With apertures; 2l in the casing @ne or both of these apertures may be filled with a, sheet of eohu'ed gloss.
villhen the plunger 13 moves downwardly it coince inte Contact With two brushes 22 and 23 supported on en insulating; block 24; on the bracket l5 end completes the circuit through the lamp l5). Vires 25 ond 26 are shown connecting; the lamp with e battery 27. The lanip is; located at the rear of the casing' (l, so that its light Will be visible to one epproechingtroin the front. This position of the lomp throws the rei-ys o light from the .lmnp upon the rear side of the lezytongs 5 :is to ineke the letter Visible to :invoice comingr up behind. The port 5 may be pointed :t bright color adopted to reflect the lightoejvs, this. bright color also serving to etti-uct attention in daylight.
llne ot these devices niet' be attached to each sirio ot the wind-shield, -so that the driver of the vehicle een readily indicate in which direction he intends to turn. Ubviouely, the particule-r conetruction oithe indient-er may be varied to suit conditions of use und not limited te the exact construction and niimoi-tienel shown in the drawings.
l. The combination oit on. extensible sie: noline` :arm` :i casing" :adapted to contain the Home in its retract-ed position und having apertures in opposite Walls, .means for extemlingf :1nd relroeting Saidnrni, e l'uncket oriented to support the ceasing; upon the ve hielo. end on electric light attached to the brochet to one ci? the casing :ind having employed. Preferablya reflector arranged to throw light both outwardly on the signaling arm when extended, and. through the apertures in the easing.
2. The combination of an extensible signaling arm, a casing adapted to contain the same in its retracted position and having apertures in opposite Walls filled with co1- ored glass, means for extending si :.,d retracting said arm, a bracket adapted to support the casing upon the vehicle, and an electric 1 0 larm when extended, and through the glass in the apertures in the easing.
