Description

F. SO'EHNEH Implement for Ruling Slates.
UNITED STATES PATENT GEETOE.
FERDINAND SOEHNER, OF HAMILTON, OHIO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,763, dated April 16, 1872.
I, FERDINAND 'SoEHNEm of Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Slate-Ruler, of which the following is a specioation, reference being had to the annexed drawing.
This invention relates to a device for ruling either single or double parallel lines upon a slate for the purpose of guiding scholars in their writing exercises.
A represents a wooden handle or socket having inserted in its edge strips B C of India rubber or other suitable flexible material. Embedded in these rubber strips is a number of small metallic rings or staples, D E, which project some distance beyond the edges of said strips. The staples I) are for the purpose of drawing single parallel lines, while the ones E are arranged in pairs, so as to make double parallel lines. The strips B and O are notched, as at b c, in order to increase their ilexibility, and, by so doing, to insure each of the staples being brought in contact with the surface of the slate.
It is evident that the device can be arranged in a different manner than is here represented and, if preferred, the single and double markers can be attached to separate handles, and a greater number of them can be employed.
In using the device one of the upper staples .is brought to bear against the inner edge of the frame, and, by drawing the implement across the surface of the slate, the other staples will mark the slate with parallel lines.
rial, may be left unnotched. The handle may be of horn, vulcanite, or metal, and may be of the same material and in one piece with the strip, the requisite rigidity being obtained by greater thickness or otherwise.
Claim.
I claim as my invention- The slate-ruler, substantially as herein shown and described, eomprisin g a rigid back or handle, A, having one or more ilexible strips, B C, armed with markers D E, whether said strips be notched or indented, as shown at b c, or otherwise.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set'my hand.
FERDINAND SOEHNER.
