GAS-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. Cartr- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyons, in the county of Greene and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas machines of the carbid feed type, and aims to provide a gas machine which is entirely automatic in its operation.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a machine in which the control of the carbid feed is automatically regulated by the amount of gas generated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gas machine which is simple in operation, and has the fewest possible parts to get out of working order.
Referring to the drawings;
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the machine;
Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view through the portion of the rod provided with the socket.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a water tank which is open at the top and is provided with a bottom 2 which is prefer ably spaced from the lower edge 3 of the circular wall of said tank. The bottom 2 is secured in place by means of the compound seam 50 shown in Fig. 1, the upper edge of the bottom ring 3 being included therein.
Secured to the inner face of the circular wall of the tank are the bracket 4 which consist of angular pieces of metal secured to the circular wall by means of rivets 5. There are four of these brackets, and they are spaced equidistantly around the circumference of the tank 1.
Arranged centrally of the bottom of the tank is a rod supporting base 6 which is secured to said bottom by means of a solder or it may be riveted thereto if desired. This member is provided with a central perforation 7 which is internally screw-threaded for the reception of the screw-threaded end 8 of a vertically extending rod 9.
The vertically extending rod 9 projects upwardly through a centrally perforated centering cone 51 and extends to a point above the top of the tank 1 as shown in Specification of Itetters Patent.

of smaller diameter than the tank 1, and movable vertically therein is a gas bell 11 the upper end'of which is tapered as at 12 the tapered portion 12 being rovided with a centrally arranged opening 13 which is bounded by an annular outwardly flaring flange 14. The bottom of the gas bell 11 is open, and is adapted to engage the brackets & to support the bell 11 when it is in its lowest position.
The gas bell is provided with an internal brace 15 which has its ends turned down as at 16 which provides for its attachment. to the bell 11 by means of rivets or the like 17. This brace 15 is provided with a central perforation 18 which is adapted to surround the vertically extending rod 9 and serves in addition to bracing the bell 11 the function of guiding the same in its vertical movements.
Received within the opening 18 of .the as bell 11 and supported upon the annular Eange 1x1 thereof is a carbid receptacle 19 which is preferably diamond shaped in cross section, and secured to the open bottom thereof is a flaring member 20 which is provided on its upper face with an annular flange 21 by which it is attached to the carbid receptacle l9.
Secured within the annular flange is an internally screwthreaded nut 22, this nut being soldered within the annular flange 21.
Having threaded engagement with the nut 22 is a cent-rally perforated plug 23, said plug having its central perforation cut out as at 2A for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. The central perforation of the plug 23 receives the vertically extending rod 9, and serves to guide the gas bell in its vertical movements. 7
The top of the carbid receptacle 19 is provided with a vertically extending flange the upper end of which is internally screwthreaded to receive'a centrally perforated coupling member 26. This coupling member 26 consists of a centralfiange 29, a depending screw-threaded portion 27 on one face thereof, and an upstanding screwthreaded portion 28 to which is attached an elbow 30. Secured to the elbow 30 is a flexible pipe 31 which leads to the distributing pipes of the system with which the machine is intended for use.
Suitably secured within the depending flange 27 of the coupling member 26 is a gas filter which consists of a piece of felt or the like and through which the gas passes as it leaves the machine.
The arbid is placed in the receptacle 19 by removing the coupling member 26 and inserting the carbid through the flanged opening 25.
In operation, the tank 1 is filled with witer to the level shown in Fig. 1 and the bell 11 is then placed therein until it enwith and is supported by the brackets t tarbid is then introduced into the carbid receptacle 19 and the coupling member 2 6 is screwed to place. \Vhen the gas bell 11 is in this position the carbid l-O is not permitted to pass downwardly into the water contained in the tank 1 by reason of the groove in the vertically extending rod 9 being wholly within the carbid chamber 19. The gas bell is then lifted until the groove 10 in the rod 9 communicates the carbid chamber 19 with the water tank 1 and permits the passage of carbid thereinto.
lVhen the carbi d has been discharged into the water tank 1, gas is immediately formed and passes upwardly through the body of water in the tank 1 to the interior of the gas bell 11. The increasing pressure in the gas bell. 11 raises the same vertically until it passes upwardly far enough to close the groove 10 thus cutting off the supply of carbid to the water tank 1 until the pressure in the gas bell 11 has (ropped sutliciently to permit of the bell lowering to a point where it again opens the groove 10 thus permitting more carbid to be deposited in the water tank 1.
The gas generated within the gas bell 11 passes out of the same by means of the cut out portion 72% of the nut and the cent 'al perforation, thereof which surrounds the vertically extending rod 9 into the carbid chamber 19 from whence it passes through the felt filtering medium to the system in which it is consumed through the elbow and the flexible pipe 31.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. 2. In a gas machine, the combination with a water tank, a gas bell movable in the tank, and a carbid receptacle carried by the bell, said carbid receptacle being dian'iond-shaped in cross section, an adjustable perforated valve plug upon the outlet mouth of the carbid receptacle, a rod carried by the water tank and passing through the valve plug and having the portion there of normally received within the receptacle formed with alongitudinal groove providing a carbid pocket, a coupling member threadedly engaging with the outlet mouth of the carbid receptacle, a gas filtering member secured to the coupler and disposed within the said outlet mouth of the carbid receptacle, and a flexible supply pipe also secured to the coupler.
In a gas machine, a water tank, a gas bell movable in the tank, a carbid receptacle carried by the bell and in communication therewith by a feed passage, a 'alve member adjustably arranged in said passage and having a projecting edge constituting a feed orifice, a. plunger permanently secured to the bottom of the tank and having a longitudinal groove formed in one side thereof adjacent its upper end, means to brace the rod, guiding means on the bell cooperating with the rod to hold the bell against lateral movement, said plunger rod closely fitting said feed orifice throughout the movements of the gas bell. and carbid receptacle.
