Hopedale, county ofl lVorcester, State o f Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in iVarping-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with vthe accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to Vwarping machines and more `particularly to warping machines of the typesuch -as illustrated for example in the patentto Rhoades No. 6%,541 granted May 9, 1899. Such machines are commonly provided with a stop vmotion mechanism which is actuated in either of two ways. First by the ,completion of .the passage through the lmachine of a predetermined length of warp, and second b v `the absence or failure of any warp end. `When the stop motion mechanism has been actue ated and the warping machine stopped 1t can usually be restarted by some simple manual operation such as the depression of a foot lever. It frequently happens that the operative thus re-starts the machine and when the stopping of the machine has been occasioned by the completion of the measurement of the predetermined length of warp such re-starting causes more warp than is desired to be wound ofi'. The presrent invention is designed primarily to guard against this diiiiculty and the object of the invention is to lock the warping machine in its inoperative position or to lock it against re-stai'ting when it has been stopped `by rcason of the completion of the measurement `of the predetermined length of warp rather than by reason of the absence or failure of a Vwarp end; or from another point of view the object is to provide a plurality of means requiring separate manual operation to enable starting of the warping machine after the actuation of the stop motion mechanism due to completion of the measurement of the predetermined length of warp.
These and `other objects ofthe invention will appear more fully from the accompanying description and drawings and will lbe particularly .pointed vout 'in the appended claims.

The construction of warping Amachine y illustrated in the drawings for the ypurpose of disclosing a preferred form of the ,present invention is substantially that of the warping machine illustrated in the Aheforemeiitioned patent to Rhoades No. `624,541 and a ,reference to said patent will render `unnecessary `a detailed description here of the machine. l
T he end frame l carries the continuously loperated rock shaft 2 having the upwardly .projecting rocker arm 3 -which through Ytite .medium of the pawl el actuates the ratchet -5 which in turn through ythe medium of the worm 6, worm wheel .7,Shaft v8, worm .9, and worm vgear 10 drives the warp measuring mechanism, .or as it .is commonly known, the warper clock. The means employed for .effecting the stoppingof the vwarping machine are in the form illustrated substantially the .same as disclosed in theaforesaid patent to Rhoades.
The starting and stopping shaft 15 carries a` rocker arm 1G `pivotally lconnected at its free end with `the elbowrlever 1.7 which iin turn is loosely connected to the sliding -rod 18, which rod at its outer vend carries the belt fork 19. According, therefore, Jto the direction in vwhich the shaft l5 is rocked the belt is shifted from the Vfast pulley v2O to ,the loose pulley 21 and vice versa. A weight y22 connected to ,the shaft `l5 is preferably .ernployed to eii'ect the stopping of the machine by shifting the belt vonto the :loose pulley and the machine is started by manually rocking the .Shaft .1.5 .in the .Opposite udirection.v For the latter purpose a treadle 23 is usually employed and rigidly connected with the shaft l5.
The starting and stopping shaft 15 has fast upon it outside the frame l the arm 24 to which is pivotally connected at 25 the shipper rod :26 extended through a suitable notched holding plate 27 on the iframe, and this rod 26 is provided with a shoulder 28 to engage the underside of the plate and maintain the stop motion mechanism inoperative when the machine is running.
A knock ott leaver 29 is pivoted on the frame in such a position that when its upper end is drawn rearwardly or to the right in Fig. 1 the lower end engages the shipper rod releasing it from the notched plate and allowing the said rod to rise vertically through the plate and the machine to be stopped through the action of the weight 22.
T he operation of the knock on1 lever and consequently of the stop motion mechanism is etected as has been stated either by the completion of the measurement ot a predetermined length of warp or by the absence or t'ailure of a warp end. For this purpose the rocker arm 3 has pivotally mounted upon it at 30 the latch 31 shown as a bent lever, the right hand or upper end ot which when in contact with the upwardly extending pron jection 32 from the rocker arm 3 holds the latch in such a position that as the .rocker arm 3 swings backwardly and forwardly the forward or lett hand end of the latch is above the knock oil lever Q9. if, however, the latch is not held against the projection 32 it will at once drop in front of the knock ofi? lever 29 and upon the return movement ot the rocker arm will operate the knock 0H lever to effect the stopping of the machine. 'l'he latch is normally held against the projection by the vibrating arm 33 fulcrumed at 34 and weighted at 35. this vibrating arm is provided with bars 3G extending in the usual way in the path of the drop wires 37 so that it any drop wire falls the vibrating arm is caught and locked when its lower end has swung to the left. rIbis vibrating arm is also provided with a pin 3S coperating with a notched arm 39 secured to the finger 12 or to a rod 40 projecting therefrom. lVhen the finger 1:2 rides out of the groove in the barrel l1 upon the completion of the measurement of the predetermined length of warp this arm 39 is rocked to bring its notched end into the path of the pin 38 so that by this means also the vibrating arm 33 is caught and locked when its lower end has swung to the left. ln both cases it will be seen that the latch 31 is released and swings on its pivot 30 to fall in iront of and effect the operation of the knock off lever 29.
lf, therefore, the stop motion has been actuated for either reason, that is, because the predetermined length of warp has been measured ott or because some one or more broken the machine is stopped. The operative places his foot on the treadle 23 and by y depressing the treadle starts the machine. "When the warp end has been broken or tails this does no harm because the piecing of the warp is attended to by the operative and the measurement of the warp remains unchanged, but if the stoppage has been due to the completion of the predetermined length ot' warp such a start of the machine causes further amount ot warp to be wound oli. which is very undersirable. the operatives are very likely thus to restart the machine. The present invention provides against such a re-starting ot the machine kand the preferred form of meehanism employed for that purpose is shown as a device for engaging the shipper rod 'x26 and locking it in elevated position when it has been actuated as the result of the completion of the measurement of a predetermined length of warp, but this locking means is so arranged as not to be operated when the machine has stopped because of the absence or failure of a warp end. It will thus be seen that in the former case a plurality ot independent manual operations are necessary in order to permit the machine to be re-started and this prevents the operative from unconsciously or carelessly re-starting the machine.
A bracket 41 is bolted to the side frame of the machine and on this bracket is tub crumed at 4:2 a bell crank lever 43. An arm 44 is connected to the' lower arm of the bell crank lever 43 and projects downwardly and is odset at 45 to rest against the side of the shipper rod 2G. rl`he shipper rod is provided at a suitable point with a notch 46 to co` operate with this offset end. A U-shaped lever is ulerumed at 47 in the bracket 41 and has one arm 48 projecting out over the rod 40 of the linger 12 and its other arm 49 normallyresting on the shoulder 5G ot the upper arm ot' the bell crank lever 43, thus holding the offset 45 out of engagement with the notch 46. It now the predetermined length of warp is measured ott' and the finger 12 rides out from the groove in the barrel 11 to eiteet the stopping of the machine the rod 40 rising will rock the arm 48 of the U-shaped lever and thus cause the arm 49 to ride up the cam surface 51 of the upper arm of the bell crank lever 43 and allow the ott-set end 45 ot the rod 44 to be swung by gravity and rest against the side ot the shipper rod 26. As the stop motion mechamsm continues its actuation and the knock ott lever strikes the shipper rod, the shipper rod rises and in its elevated position the notch 4G comes into alinement with the oilset end 45 of the rod 44 which thus constitutes a latch and drops into the notch and Nevertheless thus holds the shipper rod locked in elevated or inoperative position. If, however, the stopping of the machine is effected by the absence or failure of a warp end the rod will not be raised, and consequently there will be no locking of the shipper rod when it rises into elevated or inoperative position.
In order, therefore, to restart the machine after the stop motion has been actuated due to the completion of the measurement of the predetermined length of warp it is necessary first to remove the offset end ofthe rod 44 from the notch in the shipper rod, and second, to depress the treadle 23. Thus a plurality of, in this case two, independent or separate manual operations are required.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a warping machine comprising warp measuring mechanism, warp end absence or failure detecting mechanism, stop motion mechanism actuated both by said measuring mechanism upon the completion of a predetermined length of warp and by said detecting mechanism upon the absence or failure of a warp end, said stop motion mechanism comprising a longitudinally'movable shipper rod provided with a. shoulder, means engaging said shoulder to prevent actuating movement of said rod and thus maintain the stop motion mechanism inoperative, a knock-olf lever for said rod, means to engage said rod in and maintain it in actuated position, and means actuated by the measuring mechanism upon the completion of a predetermined Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the length of warp to actuate said knock-oftu lever and cause said engaging means to engage said rod.
2. In a warping machine comprising warp measuring mechanism, warp end absence or failure detecting mechanism, stop motion mechanism actuated both by said measuring mechanism upon the completion of a predetermined length of warp and by said detecting mechanism upon the absence o r failure of a warp end, said stop motion mechanism comprising a reciprocable starting and stopping member, locking means cooperating with said member, a pivotally mounted U- shaped lever one arm of which controls said locking means and the other arm of which is controlled by said measuring mechanism whereby the measuring mechanism upon its actuation of the stop motion mechanism operates the U-shaped lever to lock the starting and stopping member in inoperative position.
3. A warping machine comprising warp measuring mechanism, stop motion mechanism actuated both by the said measuring mechanism upon the completion of a predetermined length of warp and also by the absence or failure of a warp end, and means including a U-shaped pivoted lever to lock the warping machine in inoperative position actuated by the measuring mechanism upon the completion of a predetermined length of Warp. y
