Description

G. A. BERRY.
DOOR CHECK AND CLOSER. APPLICATION mu) NOV. 8, IHIG 1,254,877. Patented Jan. 29, 1918.
6 a M 1a INVFNTOR /6. a, Whammy;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. BERRY, or STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR ro- THE YALE & rownn MANUFACTURING COMPANY, or sramroma, CONNECTICUT.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Ciunnns A. BERRY, a citizen of the United States, and .a resident'of Stamford, in the county of Fair field and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements-in Door Checks andlClosers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,'clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in door checks andclosers and more particularly to a safety device employed in conjunction therewith, the object of the invention being to provide and conveniently locate fusible means for controlling the re lease of the door holding means in the event of a fire, and thus cause the automatic closing-of the door by the operation of the release of the door closing means.
\Vith this and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
.In the accompanying drawings; Figure l is a view of a door check and closer showing an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a. plan view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the fusible disk.
1 represents the casing; of a door check and closer and 2 the spindle of the same, to which the lever arm is secured, said lever arm being adapted for cot'iperation with the mechanism of the device and for connection open, the cap or cover with the door in the usual manner.
For the purpose of holding the lever arm in position to retain the. door temporarily JE-of the casing 1 is provided with a lug 5 and serves as a stop with which a spring-pressed dog 6 carried by the lever arm e06 erates. The dog 6 may consist of a ertically movable plunger mounted in aoss or enlargement! on the lever arm and having a beveled lower end 8. The dog 6 is provided somewhat below its'upper end with an annular shoulder 9 and the portion. of the dog above this shoulder forms a shank 10,-tl1e upper end which may be elongated in form. A spring 11 is secured at one end to the lever arm 3 by means ofa rivet 12, 'or other suitable fastening means, and the free end of this spring may be provided wi'th a slot'13 to noon annex AND cnosmz.
spring 11.
Application filed November 8, 1916. Serial No. 130,199.
10 of the dog.
A fusible or destructible member is-dis-- face of thespringposed between the under 11 and the shoulder 9 on the dog and. the
f rce of the spring to press the dog dow-n-" wardly is transmitted to said do through the medium-of said fusible mem li fusible member or destructible member sists of a ring or annular disk 14 of suitable material made to encircle the shank of .the dog and rest upon the shoulder 9 and receive the pressure exerted by the A lug or projection 9 is provided upon the upper surface of the lever arm 3, adjacent the fusible member, Sure of the spring 11 when the fusible member has been destroyed and at the same time hold the spring 11 in a position sufliciently elevated to allow the dog to rise freely and pass over the lug 5. The upper surface of the lug 9". should normally be an appreciable distance below the under surface of the spring in order that the pressure of'the spring may be exerted upon the dog- 6 through the fusible member until such time as theifusible member has been destroyed.
A screw 15 may be secured to the lever arm 3 at a point between its ends and pass freely through a hole in the spring 11,- said screw being piovided with a nut 16 to lVit h the use of a door check and closer embodying my improvements, it will be readily seen that if the door he held open by engagement of the dog 6 with the lug or stop 5, and a fire should occur in the room Where the door 1s located, the fusible mem- COII- Patented Jan. 29, 1918.-
er. The a a to receive the pres her will be broken down, destroyed. or nielted, and the tension of the spring upon the dog would be at once relieved, so that the lever arm wouldv be released by the dog 6- riding past the stop 5. and the door would be automatically closed.
Havin fully described my invention what I c laim as new and desire to secure .by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a door check and closer, the combination with the casing provided thereon with a stop, the lever arm, a dog carried by the lever arm to. engage said stop to hold the door open, and a. spring secured to' the,
2. In a door cheek and closer the combination wit a casing p1: vided thereon with a stop, a lever arm, and a dog carried by the lever arm to engage said stop to hold the door open, of a spring secured to said arm and adapted to press said dog toward the casing, and a fusible disk disposed between the free end of said spring and said do a 3% In a door cheek and closer, the combination with the casing provided thereon with a stop, and a lever arm, of a dog carried by the lever arm to engage said stop to hold the door open, said dog having an annular shoulder and a shank above said shoulder, a spring secured at one end to the lever arm and provided at its free end with an opening to receive the shank of the dog, and a fumble ring encircling the shank of the dog and disposed between the annular shoulder on the latter and the under face 0 said s rin 4. n a door cheek and closer, the combination of a casing astop. thereon, a lever arm, a dog carriecf hyithe lever arm to engage said stop, a sprin "secured to the lever arm, a fusible'mem ber etween the free end of said spring and said-dog,'and a lug on the lever arm to receive said spring when {he fusible member has'been redueed by eat.
In testimony whereof I have signed this speeifiea ion in the presence of two subscribing Wit esses. CHARLES A BERRY. W itneeses.
