FARLIE REED ANDRUS, 0F MOTLEY, MINNESOTA.
ICE-LOADER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 22, 1918.
Application led May 7, 1917. Serial No. 167,034.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, FARLIE R. ANDRUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Motley, in the county of Morrison, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Loaders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for handling ice, and pertains more particularly to devices for removing ice from the water after the same has been cut in the ice iield.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which a plurality of cakes of ice may be handled with one operation.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and cheap in manufacture.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure l, is a perspective view of the device,
Fig. 2, is a view showing the method in which the device is adapted to engage a cake of ice in its operation, and,
Fig. 3, is a view showing the method in which the device is used.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises a U-shaped member 10 which is preferably constructed of a continuous strip of rigid metal such as iron which is circular in cross section, said strip of iron being` bent as at 11 to form the U- shaped member 10. The free ends of the legs of the U-shaped member 10 are provided with rings or eyes 12 by means of which a rope or cable 13 may be secured thereto.
Rigidly secured to each of the legs of the U-shaped member 10 and projecting therefrom at right angles thereto is a flat bar or the like 14 which is rigidly secured to the legs of the U-shaped member as by welding or the like and each of these members 14 is provided near its upper end with a pluralitv of perforations 15. Engaged in the perforations 15 is a rod 16 the opposite ends of which are threaded as at 17 and nuts 18 are employed for engagement with said screw threaded ends to retain the rod in position with respect to the members 14.
As shown in Fig. 2, the legs of the U- shaped member are adapted to lie in contact with the side faces of a block of ice, the base of the U-shaped member engaging one end thereof. The members 14; extend upwardly along the side faces of the block of ice and the transversely extending bar 16 is adapted to engage the top face of the block. Nhen the device is so positioned with respect to the block of ice it is apparent that the same may be moved by application of power to the rope or cable 13.
Referring to Fig. 3, a platform 20 is adapted to be supported near the edge of the ice wh'ch is being cut, and projecting from that edge of the platform which is adjacent the edge of the ice is a skid or the like Q1 the end of which terminates Hush with the edge of the platform 20, and the lower end of the skid projects into the water beyond the edge of the ice. The ropes or cables 13 are adapted to pass upwardly over the platform 20 as at 22 and have secured at their ends a swingle-tree 23 to which a draft animal may be attached.
If now the U-shaped member' 10 be engaged with a block of ice in the manner heretofore described it is apparent that the block of ice with which it is engaged may be drawn up the skid 21 onto the platform 20 from which it may be loaded into a vehicle for transportation. If desired, any number of cakes of ice may be placed in front of the one engaged by the U-shaped member between the ropes or cables 13, and they will likewise move up the skid 21 to the platform 20, the ropes or cables 13 keeping said blocks of ice from slipping sidewise off of said skid.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped member, means for attaching a cable to the U- shaped member, an arm proiecting from each side of the U-shaped member, and provided with a plurality of perforations, and a rod removably secured to said arms.
2. A device of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped member, means for attachnga cable thereto, per In testimony whereof, I affix my signaforated arms projecting from opposite sides ture in the presence of two witnesses. y
