SAFETY GAGE-COCK.
Application filed February 28, 1914, Serial No. 821,689,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. WADELL, Sn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamson, in the county of Mingo, State of est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Gage-Cocks; and I do hereby declare the fOllOWiIlg to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to safety gage cocks.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a gage cock for steam boilers which embodies an improved construction whereby same can be ground or renewed with full pressure on the boiler thereby obviating the necessity of drawing the fire from beneath the boiler, blowing out water and steam, refilling the boiler with water and rebuilding the fire.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of constructions and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in Which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a gage cock constructed in accordance with the invention with the gage cock valve in closed position;
Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1 with the parts in the position they would occupy when trying water in the boiler;
Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 1 with the parts in the position they would occupy to permit removal of the gage cock for renewal or grinding thereof, and
Fig. 4, a section on the line 4.-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the improved gage cock is shown as comprising an inner tubular member 10, an intermediate tubular member 11 threaded in one end of the tubular member 10, and an outer tubular member 12 threaded on the tubular member 11. The end of the bore of the tubular member 10 remote from the tubular member 11 is flared as at 13 to form a seat for a safety valve 14. This valve 14 is provided with a stem 15 worhng in guides 16 and 17 the latter being Specification of LettersPatent.

confined between the. tubular members 10 and 11. The end of the stem 16 remote from the valve 14- is provided with a recess 18 for a purpose that will presently appear. The bore of the member 11 alines with the bore of the member 10 and is provided centrally with an enlarged portion 19 terminating at one end in a tapering portion 20. Threaded in the tubular member 11 and communicating with the enlarged portion 19 is a laterally directed discharge pipe 21. The bore of the member 12 alines with the bore of the member 11 and has threaded therein a gage cock valve 22 the outer end of which provided with a handle 23 for operating same in the usual and well known manner. The valve 22 is provided adjacent its inner end with a tapered portion 24. adapted to seat in the tapered portion 20 of the bore of the member 11 to close communication between the enlarged portion 19 and the interior of the boiler. The inner end of the valve 22 terminates in a reduced stem which is slidably and rotatably engaged in the recess 18 of the stem 15.
Vhen the boiler is in use the valve 22 is operated to the position shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to try out the water in the boiler the valve 22 is operated to the position shown in Fig. 2 when steam and water can pass out through the pipe 21. When it is desired to remove the valve 22 and the members 11 and '12 said valve 22 is operated to the position shown in Fig. 3. In this position of the valve 22 the safety valve 14. will automatically close communication between the interior of the boiler and the bore of the member 10 under the influence of pressure within the boiler. members 11 and 12 together with the valve 22 can then be detached for the purpose of renewing any of the parts or for the purpose of grinding the valve 22 and its seat 20.
What is claimed is A gage cock comprising a pair of tubular sections, an intermediate tubular section having its terminals detachably secured to to first named sections respectively, the bore of said intermediate section having a tapered portion, a lateral discharge element communicating with the bore of the intermediate portion, a valve threaded in one of said first named sections and having a ta ered portion adapted to seat in the tapere portion of the bore of the intermediate section, a safety valve for closing the outer end of The the other of said first named sections and tion and in which said stemis adapted to 1 provided with a stem extending through the slide. 1
