Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that J osr. Power Y ZABALA, a subject of the King of Spain, residing at Viewpark, West Ferry, Dundee, in the county of Forfar, Scotland, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Sewing Hemp Soles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to machines for sewing hemp soles, the principal feature consisting in the arrangement of parts whereby two or more needles and their appurtenances are simultaneously actuated.
The machine is used for the transverse sewing of the soles.
In order that my said invention and the manner of putting the same into practice may be properly understood, I have hereunto appended two sheets of drawings in which the same reference numerals are used to indicate corresponding parts in the figures shown Figure l is a face view of the machine.
Fig. 2 is a plan.

To describe my invention, 1 will take as an example amachine which has three hollow needles 1, 2 and 3, through which latter the thread passes, there being an eye 52 at the ointed end of each needle, as shown particularly in Fig. 5. These needles are carried by a bracket 4 mounted for a vertical reciprocation in the guides 5. This reciprocating motion is given to the needle carrying bracket i by two cams 6 and 7 havin opposite raceways 53 to receive the re lers 8 mounted on the vibratory lever 9 pivotally mounted in any suitable manner on the machine. Each cam is rovided with a balanceweight 54. The nee les are arranged in a stepped relation to one another, that is, the pointed end of the innermost needle is disposed at a certain height, the next is at a lower level, while the pointed end of the next needle is at a still lower level as shown particularly in Figs."3 and 4.
A stepped carriage 10 is mounted in the machine, its steps corresponding with the stepped relation of the needles 1, 2 and 3.

Shuttle carriers 11, 12 and 13 are mounted for reciprocatory movement, the shuttle carriers being disposed between the steps of the carriage 10, as shown particularly in Fig. 4, and these-shuttle carriers are also arranged in stepped relation to one another to corre spond with the stepped relation of the needles and the steps of the carriers 10. These shuttle carriers may be reciprocated in any suitable manner, but as shown, by a cam 15 with which cooperates a roller 16 which latter has operative connection with the shuttle carriers.
The carriers 18 for the soles 19 are intermittently traversed along the face of the machine by screws .19 which rotate in guides 20 on the carriage 10 each screw actuated by a spur wheel 21. The three, spur wheels are connected together by means of intermediate spur wheels 22 in order that all the screws are rotated in the same direction. The innermost spur wheel 21 is arranged in mesh with a driving spur wheel 24 which in turn is arranged in mesh with a star wheel 26 mounted on the shaft 25. This shaft 25 is driven by suitable gearing from the bevel wheel 27 which is mounted on the main driving shaft 41 of the machine. The shaft ll is provided with a belt pulley elO and with a clutch 28 controlled by a hand lever 29.
The actuation of the machine can be stopped by withdrawing the clutch 28. The carriers 18 for the soles are provided with half nuts 23 which engage with the screws 19!.
On each side of the frame are provided two screws 30 which bear against the carriage 10. These screws allow of the carriage being adjusted transversely to suit the difi'er-' ent thicknesses of the soles to be stitched. The movement reqluired is very slight, the carriage 10 being 5 id only the required distance on the frame. The screws on one side of the carriage are first withdrawn to the required extent before the screws on the other side of the carriage are rotated to move said carriage.
There are two sets of piercers 31 and 32 almost facing each other, three in each set and these are also stepped. Each pair top and bottom is at a distance from each other the points of the powers in one set pass the points of the piercers in the other set as both sets are simultaneously moved toward each other.
The piercers have a combined reciprocatory and rotatory motion which is obtained by carrying each set in a bracket 33 operated by a crank 34-. and connecting rod 235 the piercer spindles 36 being suitably guided by guides 37 and having on each spindle a spur pinion 38, each pinion gearing into the one on the adjacent spindle or spindles. the innermost pinion being driven by a spur wheel 39 operated through suita le gearing from the driving pulley 40. Each spindle reciprocates in its spur pinion.
All the parts are operated from a main driving shaft 41 through suitable shafts and gearing and the carriage with its feed screws 19' is of such length that while one set of soles leaving the machine on their carriers and on to the carrier delivery table 42 another set is being sewn transversely while yet another set on the other carriers can be placed immediately behind the intermediate set and thus the machine can be continuously operated.
It is to be understood that each carrier carrying a set of soles is fed into the machine consecutively and not three at a time.
The carriers in their passage to the delivery table pass the strippers 43 and the soles are by them removed from the carriers and allowed to drop into a basket placed at 44.
To obtain equality in the tension of the threads in connection with the needles one tension arm 45 operated by an eccentric 46 ma be used for all the threads, the threads 47 being drawn through the tension devices 48 from their respective bobbins 49 and from thence through the guide 50 to the needles.
' Having now described my invention, what vI claim as new and desire to secure by. Letters Patent is:
1. In a machine for the manufacture of hemp soles, in combination, a plurality of reciprocatory needles, means for vertically reciprocating said needles, shuttles to coact with said needles, carriers for the support of said shuttles, means to reciprocate the shuttles, carriers for the soles, and screws having operative connection with the sole carriers whereby the sole carriers may be fed through the machine,
2, In a machine for the manufactu're of hemp soles, in combination, a plurality of needles, means for reciprocating said needles, shuttles to coact with said needles,
carriers for the shuttles, carriers for the soles, screws to impart motion to the sole carriers, a plurality of piercers, and means whereby reciprocatory and rotary motion is imparted to said piercers.
3. In a machine for the manufacture of hemp soles, the combination, a plurality of needles, means for vertically reciprocating said needles, shuttles to coact with said needles, carriers for said shuttles, carriers for the soles, traversing screws to impart motion to the sole carriers, a plurality of piercers. a bracket in which said piercers are rotatably mounted, a connecting rod and crank connected to said bracket to impart reciprocatory motion thereto and to the piercers, and gears operatively con- 1 nected to said piercers to impart rotary-motion to the latter.
4. In machines for the manufacture of hemp soles, carriers for the hemp soles. a sewing mechanism, a carriage to movably support said sole carriers, and screws to adjust the position of sai carriage for various thicknesses of soles to be sewed.
5. In machines for the manufacture of hemp soles, carriers for the hemp soles, guiding means for the sole carriers, and screws operatively connected to the sole carriers to feed the latter intermittently through the machine.
