:em connor..
Be it known that I, Rohm `Bauma' H1018; a citizen of theyUnited States, residing at 'New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful- Improvements in Pump Controls, of which tht-following is a specification. My .inventionrelates to a pump control.
. and hotvwater return mechanism whereby the hot water of condensation from radi- L ators, etc., is collected and fed to the boiler by an automatically controlled pump. The
4essential features of my invention are a res- -ervoir or tank for the condensation water,
a pum to deliver the water therefrom to the boi er, a motor for the pump, a ressure actuated controlling means arrang outside i of the reservoir and adapted to be' moved pump and that thereafter the circuit will in w operative position b the rse of the water in the tank, a switc operated by the controlling means, a connection from the switch to the pump, and a by-pass pipe from 4the ump to the controlling means whereby i the atter is maintained in starting position by the pressure from' the pump until the water in the tank is exhausted and the suc- .tion uncovered. It is arranged that when the tank isilled the pressure of the water will actuate the controllin means initially toclose the control circuit r operating the be maintained and closed bythe pressure from the pump. r
My invention will be understood by reference to Vthe accompanying drawing wherein a `desirable embodiment. thereof -is illus- A trated, and wherein the reference numerals ofihis description are applied to the correr: spending parts in the several views, Therein Figure 1 isa view in elevation showing an approved arrangement of my. invention. Fi 2` is a 4sectional view showing .a con-i Atro ling device in detailand Fi .-3 is a viewV similar to Fig. 1 illustrating a s ightly modi-v 45 fied arrangement.
In the arrangement disclosed 1 indicates a suitable base for the entire installation, 2 is the tank having the intake 3 for the condensation water and thevent 4.1 At 6 is shown the pump having volute 7 and pipe8 from the tank, and` a motor 10 `i s,connected Ato the pump b the shaft 11` prov ided with the usual coup ing 12,

14 mounted upon switch' support 16 and operated by a magnet 15 energized by a controlling circuit 17 which 4is opened and closed by a controller switch arm 18 co# acting with upper and . lower contacts 19, 19.
'l'he switch arm 18 of thecon'trolling device is arranged to 4be actuated by the' pressure of the fluid, and to this end is arranged .as
vvshown, to be actuated by a suitab pb1'agm20 positioned within a chamber in the controller easing 21. The switch arm is f ulcrumed at 22 and isengaged by a post 23 carried by the diaphragm as indicated. At 24 is a connection rom the tank communicating with the chamber beneath the daphragm and 25 indicates a similar connection or by pass from `thepump discharge `pipe 28 to said chamber, this by-pass preff4 erably .being provided with a regulating valve 26 as indicated.` As will be readil understood from the' arrangement describ presire exerted by-the iluid beneath the dlap ragm' will operate to lift the switch arm 18, from its normal.lower position shown, into engagement with the upper contact '19 to closethe controlling-circuit 17. At29 there is shown'an auxiliary switch for manually closingV the controlling circuit 17 .to operate the lman switchlet when the switch arm 18 is i n normal lowered position, as shown, at 'wh1ch"`time it rests upon the lower contact 19. This Permitsof operat-` ing the ump to empty the'tankindepend enti Vo the automatically operatin *control in?` devices; it being understo that the va' v -26 is first closed before :the circuit 117 is thus inanuallyclosed byfthejswitch 29.
In the modified form o ffFigu'B the'by pass pipe 25j slconn'ected with the pump "--I A volu adjacent" the mP-.itheref This arrangement is particularly desirable for the l24'providcs a passage reason that the pipe for the escape of air or steam, pieventin its accumulation in the bop of the pum voute. This latter condition, or steam inding, often occurs in the' use of pumps in the 'ar'- rangement here described and greately impairs the ro r operation of the pump.
Fromt e oregoing it will be understood i that when the tank is filled to the outlet 24,
.and a few inches above, pressure of the 'water will be exerted .on the diaphragm to shift the switchi` arm- 18 responsive to the water` pressure and therebythe switch 1.4
' `will be closed, closing the main circuit, the 110 current will pass and the motoriwill' start. A
the pum and as the water falls in thevtank the diap ragm will be held Vup in operative position by the pressure throughthe by-pass pipe so flong as -the pump is. operating and any water is being pumped, thus insuring` the emptying of the tank once the pump is started. So long as the pump is operatingy and pumping water, there willbe an excess pressure in the pump volute, which is 'ex-If erted through the by pass pipe to maintain the diaphragm in operative position 'it being understood that the by-pass pipe is larger than the opening from 'the diaphragm chamberto the tank. When empty there is no more waterpassing, consequently no pressure to hold'the diaphragm up, and the contacts are then separated,v the switch is oened and the pump is then cut out until tetnkisaainilled.`
I believeA t at this manner of applying power from the pum volute to any regulating or control mec anism is broadly new `and therefore I desire to claim the saine broadly. y
Furthermore my particular arrangement and combination of parts is desirable and an improvement over .any form of control for a similar purpose, with which I am acquainted. I am awarev that. umps and motors for similar purposes have been controlled by a float arranged within the tank but such arrangement had many disadvantages--there was constant danger 'of rusting and of injurfy to the parts; a man hole was necessary or access to the' parts to make repairs; in that case the whole a'pparatus had to be shut down; also holes had to be tapped for the switchpthe entire tank lwould not be emptied; the ioat requiresa large tank, and. cannot prolong the operatioln, for it operates through a small range on y Imy )resent arrangement of an ex terior diap ragm control, or other desirable exterior regulator, all those disadvantages i are overcome-,there is little danger ofthe .diaphragm getting, put off-order and, if it does, it can be quickly and easily repaired or a new dia hragm substituted ,almost in an instantan at a trilling cost.
