Description

aED WAR D WEISSENBORN."
Improvement in Machines for Coloring and Polishing Lead Pencils, 8w. i N0. 125,360, i V Patented Aprii2,i872.
UNITED STATES EDWARD WEISSENBORN, OFHUDSON CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR COLORING AND POLISHING LEAD-PENCILS, he.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,360, dated April 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD WEISSENBORN, of Hudson City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and ImprovedMachine for Golorin g and Polishing Lead and other Pencils, and other articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,'clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification.
This invention has for its principal object the uniform coloring, and also the polishing,
of wood-incased lead and other pencils, and other similarlyformed articles, in a more rapid and convenient manner than has heretofore been provided; and to this end it consists in one or more horizontally-arranged cylinders or receptacles for containing the pencils or other articles and the coloring or polishing material, carried upon a horizontal shaft having a rotary and a rectilinear reciprocating motion, whereby the desired end is attained. It also consists in a novel combination of devices whereby said combined motions may be imparted to the said shaft.
Referringto the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of a machine for this purpose constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the same; and Fig. 3, a transverse section taken through the cylinders thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
A is a rectangular frame constructed of hard wood or cast metal. Supported in hearings on the top of this frame, and lengthwise thereof, is a horizontal shaft, B, carrying upon one end one or more hollow cylinders, O, for containing the pencils or other articles to be colored or polished, as the case may be, and the coloring or polishing material. The said shaft B is provided not only with a rotary motion, but also with a reciprocating motion in the direction of its axis, so that the pencils or articles contained Within the cylinders, by having their positions continually changing both laterall y and longitudinally during the operation, have all parts of their surfaces brought successively in such repeated contact with each other and with the coloring or the polishing material as to become rapidly and uniformly colored or polished. The said cylinders, when more than one are used, as in the present case, are preferably arranged in a cluster, as shown in the drawing, having their two heads common to all, the outer one being made removable for insertion of the pencils or other articles, while a side opening or bung-hole, c, is provided to each cylinder for insertion of the coloring or the polishing material after the pencils or articles have been inserted and the removable head again adjusted to its place.
Any suitable coloring material, in a liquid or semi-liquid state, may be used in the colorin g operation, while any suitable polishing material in a pulverized state, such as pulverized sulphur, may be used for polishing.
For producing the combined movement of the shaft B, I use a counter or driving shaft, D. For producing the rotary motion this driving-shaft D is provided with a pinion, d, which gears with a spur-Wheel, b, of the shaft B, substantially in the usual way, except that provision is made for the sliding of the shaft B through the hub of the spur-wheel b by means of a longitudinal groove, 8, in the former Workin g over an inwardly-pro ectin g pin or feather, p, of the latter. For producing the rectilinear reciprocating motion the said driving-shaft D is provided at its inner end with a beveled gear-wheel, g, which gears with a beveled pinion, 6, carried upon a transversely-arranged shaft, E. Upon this transverse shaft E is also carried an eccentric, f, for operating an eccentric rod, F, which connects with the oscillating arm I of a rock-shaft, H, so as, by the turning of the said transverse shaft E, to cause the oscillation of the arm I. The upper extremity of the said oscillating arm I is formed with a suitable notch or groove, and made to embrace the main shaft B at a point thereon between fixed collars a a, so that by the turning of the drivingshaft'the main shaft B is caused both to rotate upon its axis and to reciprocate in the direction of the same. I consider a crank as an equivalent to the eccentric f, and may, when desirable, be used instead thereof.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
l. The cylinders or receptacles 0, constructed as described, and carried upon a shaft or stem having a rotary and a rectilinear reciprocating m0tion,'snbst-antially as and for the reciprocating motion are imparted to the said purpose herein set forth. main shaft, substantially as specified.
2. The driving-shaft D, transverse shaft E, EDW. WEISSEN BORN. eccentric or equivalent, f, rod F, rock-shaft H, and oscillating arm I, in combination with Witnesses: each other and with the grooved main shaft FRED. HAYNES, B, whereby combined rotary and rectilinear R. E. RABEAU.
