Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J an, L5, 191%.
' Application filed May 14, 1917. snal'ivo. 168,350.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENR Manors, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county of. Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instruments for Applying Liquid Finish to Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for applying liquid material paint or blacking for instance, to the welt or edge of a shoe. Hitherto for the most part this has been done by hand with an ordinary brush, which requires great care, skill and much time. The object ofthe presentinvention is'to providea device by which this work may be done with greater rapidity and uniformity.
In the jdrawing herewith accompanying and forming a part of this application igure 1 is an elevation partly in section of any improved device, showing it adapted to operate on the welt; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the brush carrying feed pipe and its adjusting valve; F ig. 3 is a detail view showing the vessel closure and means for supporting the guiding mechanism; Fig. 1 is a detail view of a guide for operating on the edge of the sole, andFig. 5 is a detail view showing means forpreventing the rotation of the brush carrying pipe in the closure. 3
The same reference characters indicate like parts in the several figures.
In said drawings 1 is a container for the material being used, 2 a closure therefor and 3 a tank for air under pressure which has an open connection with said container. Any convenient means may be employed for filling the air tank, of which I have illustrated a simple one which consists in providing the tank with an inlet pipe a in which is mounted a float check valve 5. The tank may be filled with air under pressure by blowing into the inlet pipe 4 01' by an air pump. Inserted in the container, preferably through the closure, is a pipe 6, and for convenience the outer end is curved. as shown at 7. In the end of this pipe is inserted a brush 8 which has one or more openings 9 therein. At a convenient point in the pipe is a stop 10 having a longitudinal opening 11 therein. Extending transversely through the pipe and stop is a reciprocating valve 12 provided with an opening 13. The valve is held by a spring 14;
normally .in position so that opening 13 is out of register with opening 11. Any convenient spring device may be used for the purpose. I I have shown a flat spring having one endattached to a bracket 15 mounted on the pipe and the other end bifurcated, as seen at 16,,to loosely engage the valve stem. The spring is held in place by an adjusting nut 17, By means of nut 17 the valve can be adjusted so that if desired only a predetermined portion of opening 13 can be brought to register with the opening 11. Pivotally attached to the opposite side of pipe Tor to a bracket15 is a lever 18, the upper end 19 of which is bifurcated and slidingly engages valve 12 and the lower end of which.isprovided with a handle 20.
.Slidably mounted on pipe 6 is a sleeve 21 which may be locked thereto by means of a set screw 22. The sleeve supports an arm 23 to which is secured in any convenient manner a guide carrier 24.. As shown, mounted in this carrier is a guide of any suitable .form and structure adapted to en-, gage and move along the outside of a shoe and positioned relative to the brush so that the brush will engage thedesired part of the shoe as the device is movedrelative to the shoe. In Fig. 1, I. have shown a guide 25 adapted to be used when applying the material to the welt. It preferably a plate mounted on a yielding spring :26 secured to a plunger 27 yieldingly mounted in the carrier and adjustable by means of a threaded nut 28. In Fig. 4 I have shown a guide adapted to be used with the brush when material is being applied to the edge of the sole. This consists of a U-shaped member 29 secured to plunger 27. The brush is mounted between the arms of the U-shaped member which embrace the edge of the sole and slide in engagement therewith. The space between the arms of the U-member may be adjusted to fit soles of varying thickness by means of a threaded bolt 30. The air tank may be provided with a pipe 31 passing through the container. The feed pipe may be held against rotation in the do sure by means of a clamp 32 adapted to engage it and the pipe 31 to which the air tank is connected. The form and construction of many of the parts which go to make up this device may be varied and still be Within the scope and spirit of my invention.
I claim:
