Be it known that I, Homer: Dumas, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Suffolk, New.York,. have made Improvements in, Advertising Display-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to machines for au- ..tomatically displaying and changing pictures or like matter for advertising or amusement purposes. The objects and advantages of the invention will'be set forth hereinafter'in part, and in part will be obvious herefrom.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and dejecting apparatus;

I In accordance with certain features of the invention, a machine is provided especially adapted for advertising and also for amuse-- ment purposes, and in certain aspects having in mind more especially automatically operating machines for exposing successive pictures to view for a deslred interval of time, which machines are adaptable or capable of projecting the lightthrough a film,
and of reproducing pictures and other matter by reflected light.

bands of film or of opaque material bearing p1ctures or other matter which are reproduced by reflected light, and in the present embodiment these various features are realized together in one machine.
The invention, in one feature thereof, prevents or eliminates a dangerous amount of.
heat in the neighborhood of the film, thereby rendering it entirely practicable to permit the machine to run on for protracted periods of time without watching or testing as to the amount of heat evolved, as would ordinarily be necessary to avoid ignition or explosion of inflammable film. Other features of the invention, and advantages flowing therefrom will appear hereinafter or be obvious herefrom.
Referring more particularly to the embodiment illustrated herein by way of example, a machine is provided with a suitable frame comprising a base or foot plate 1, adapted to rest upon a support, from which .to'ot' plate extends upwardly the apertured frame piece 2, having the horizontal member 3 extending along the top thereof. This frame may be integral if desired, and will be of suitable material and construction. In the form shown, if the base be firmly held, the whole machine is maintained in stable position. s Mounted on a cross piece 4 of the frame in bosses 5 and 6 are rods 7 and 8, upon which rods a lamp housing, which may also carry the Whole or a part of the lenses may be detachably mounted. Cooperating with the supports just described, are provided lamp and lens housings interchangeable the one with the other, whereby the machine may reflection.

In the embodied form there are provided along the top frame piece 3 a series of driven rolls 10, 11,12, 13 and 14, some or all of which engage the film-band by positive means, as forexample sprocket teeth 15 engaging with In cooperative juxtaposition with the insprocket holes in the film whereby the feed of the film is positive and regular with .respect to the rotation of-the sprocket rolls.
Gotiperating with these rolls are other 'rolls, which need not be driven, for directing the film band m along its pathway through the machine. Such additional rolls comprise rolls 16, 17 and 18 arranged along-the bottom part of the upright frame member 2. A. suitable take-up device for the slack in the film may be provided, and in the embodied form this is shown applied to the roller 18, said roller 18 being journaled at one end of a lever 19, which lever is pivotally supported at 20 upon the frame 2. The other end of the lever 19 is acted on by a spring 21, which operates to put the neces-' ,sary tension upon the film band w.
Means are provided also for preserving or affording a reserve supply'of the film band, wherebyqthe quantity and Variety of matter to be shown is greatly increased without increase in the size of the machine. In the embodied form rollers 22, 23, and 24 are chain 46, said chain passing'likewise about journaled in a cross piece 25 of the frame 2, the film band m running alternately; over one of the top'rollers 10, 11, and 12 and thence to one of the bottom rolls 22, 23 and 24, or in like manner over various successive sets of these rollers, as may be desirable for the length of film band it iswished to utilize at any particular time. - Means are provided for giving intermittent rotary motion to the driven film carrying rolls to provide the requisite intermittent movement of the film withthe intervening dwells while the pictures orother. matter are being shown. In the embodied form of said means a motor 35, of any suitable kind is provided, and shown asan electric motor, having a pulley ,36 upon the shaft. thereof. Over pulley 36 runs a beltv37, said belt 37 also running over a pulley 38, which is fixed on ashaft- 39,- said shaft 39 being mounted in bearings 40 and 41=on the machine frame. Fixed on the shaft 39 is ,a worm thread 42 cotiperating with a worm wheel 43 upon the shaft 44. The shaft 44 passes through the'machine frame and on the oppositeside (Fig. 3) this shaft has fixed thereon a sprocket wheel 45. Passing over the sprocket wheel 45 is a sprocket sprocket wheels 47, 48, 49 andv52. Sprocket 5 2 is fixed on the shaft of roller 14. Asuit able take-up device is provided in connec-- tion with the sprocket .wheel 49, and as shown said sprocket 'wheelis rotatably mounted on an arm 50, which-arm is pivoted at 51 upon the machine frame. "The arm 50 is acted upon by a suitable spring, screw or other compensatingdevice.
In the embodied form of emeans forand 60. The sprocket 57 engages with a sprocket chain 61. The sprocket chain 61 engages also each of the sprocket wheels 53, 54, 55 and 56, thus driving the rolls 10, 11, 12,. 13 and 14 in unison with the intermittent movement of the sprocket wheel 57.
The sprocket wheel 57 is fast to an intermittently moving sprocket wheel 87 (which is described later), and wheel 57 thereby imparts intermittent movement to chain 61 and to rollers 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, from wheel 87. Between .the sprocket wheels 53 and 54 is a sprocket wl1eel 62, which holds ,the sprocket chain 61 in engagement with the lower part of the two sprocket wheels 53 and 54. Similar sprocket wheels 63 and 64 are provided between the sprocket wheels 54, and 55, and 55 and 56, respectively. A suitable slack taking up' device is provided, shown herein as a sprocket wheel 65, which wheel is mounted upon a lever 66, said lever bein pivoted at 67 upon the machine frame. T e other arm of lever 66 is acted on by a spring 68.
The embodied form of means for effecting the intermittent movement of the driven rollers 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 from the chain 46, is substantially the same as that shown in application for patent, Ser. ,No. 859,275, of Dumars and Darby filed August 31, 1914.
Briefly described, the bracket 58'is extended downwardly to furnish a bearing for a slotted rotary disk or star wheel 80 provided with radiallyarranged slots 81. Upon the chain 46 is a pin 82 projectingfrom the chain 46 into the path of the star wheel or rotatable diskv 80, and adapted each time it passes the disk to enter one of the slots 81 and impart thereby to the disk 80 a quarter rotation- The disk 80 remains at A rest thereafter until'the pin 82 again en gages with the next slot 81 of the wheel 80. Thechain 46 and pin 82 are guided in their travel past the wheel 80 by guides 83' and 84 fastened upon the machine frame.
Fixed to rotate with the wheel 80 is -a double sprocket wheel.85, over which runs a sprocket chain 86, said sprocket chain running over the sprocket wheel 87 fixed on the shaft 88 of the roller 14. Sprocket wheel 87 is fixed to rotate with sprocket 57,'
the sprocket chain 61 running over wheel 57, and thereby the same intermittent mo-'- tion is imparted to each of the driven rolls tion by springs 107 and 108. Pivotally con- 11, 12, 13' and 14. Running also over the wheel 91 fixed on the shaft 92 of the roller 16. Roll 16 is thereby also positively driven unison with the other feeding rolls, and there is a uniform and exact feeding of the film band past the light. The rolls 16 may also be provided with sprocket teeth 93. A
centering disk 98 and coiiperating stop 99' may be employed, and as shown are gen- I erally similar in construction to those shown in application Ser. No. 859,275. This device operates to accurately center or frame the film or other pictures. p 1
Means are provided for stopping the action of the light during the movement of the :film band, and according to one feature of held by fastenings 101 and 102 working, re-
spectively, in slots 103 and 104 in the plate 100. The upper end of the plate 100 is of enlarged or T-shape, and has at either end thereof two inclined cam surfaces 105 and 106 with a level surface 'therebetween. The plate 100 is held resiliently in upper posi- 1' nected to the sliding plate 100 is a link 109,
said link being also pivotally connected to one end of a lever 110, which lever is pivoted upon the frame 111. Pivotally connected to the other end of the lever 111 is a link 112, which link is also pivoted to one end of a switch lever 113. The lever 113-is pivoted at 114 on the machine frame. The terminals 115 and 116 of the light circuit 117 and 118 are in position to be opened or closed by the switch 113 as it is moved from one position to the other with the movement of the plate 112. When the pin 82 approaches the slot 81 in disk 80 just prior to the shifting of the film, the pin encounters the cam surface 105 upon the sliding plate 100, and the plate 100" is, thereby moved downwardly against the pull of itssprings 107 and 108, thereby throwing the switch lever 113- into the open position, as shown in Fig. 3. When the fgin 82 leaves the slot 81, at the close of the m shifting movement, it. passes out of contact with the surface 106, and the plate 100 slides upwardly under the pull of the springs thereby automatically shifting the lever 113 and turning on the light. Light wires 119 are shownextending from the circuit 118 up into the lamp house. A hand switch 120 may-be provided for turning on and off the light. 7
Referring nowto the ineans for projecting the lightthrough the film, and in connection therewith the embodied form of means for of the film, in the embodied form a lamp house 125 is detachably mounted on the rods 7 and 8, which rods may be slid in and out of their bearings in the frame. The lamp house 125 is carried upon a frame 126 and upon a frame 127 at either end thereof, said frames having apertures within which are the rods 7 and '8, the frames 126 and 127 being longitudinally adjustable along the rods, and the lamp house being mounted into place and removed therefrom by longitudinally withdrawing the rods. The lamp house 125 is provided with a lamp 128, the light from which is suitably directed and projected through the film. A suitable reflector 124 is provided, and also a door 123.
As embodied the means for cooling the light are mounted within the lamp house. In the embodied form, a mirror or other suitable reflecting surface 130 is mounted to receive the concentrated or focused rays from the lens 129. The light rays are reflected from the surface 130 through the condensing lenses 131, through the film 0c, and through the projecting lens 132. In the embodied form, the mirror or reflecting surface 130 has formed at the back thereof a chamber 134, in which a cooling medium may be inclosed or may be circulated therethrough, such as a body or stream of air or water. Said chamber may consist of a material having great conductivity, such as copper, and may be arranged to have a constant fluid circulation therethrough, as of air or water. The projecting lens 132 may be demountable in view of the adaptability of the machine for the projection of light through a film band or the reflection of the light therefrom. As embodied, the projecting lens 132 v is carried upon a stem 135, which stem is mounted in a bracket 136. Bracket 136 is fixed upon the machine frame, and is provided with a clamping screw 137 for holding the lens in proper position.
Means are provided for holding the film flat and true during the projection of the picture, and the embodied form thereof is substantially. the same as that shown in pending application Ser. No. 859,275 hereinabove referred to. In such embodiment, transparent plates 140 and 141 of glass or other suitable material are arranged upon opposite sides of the film band a; at the place of projection. The plates 140'and 141 are relatively movable toward and from each stri therebetween and to release it from its fee or travel. As embodied the plate is stationary, and is mounted in the front of the lamp house, andplate 141 is movable. The plate 141 is mounted upon four rods 142, which rods are reciprocably mounted in apertures in cross pieces 143 and 144 for the .up" er, rods, and 145 and 146 for the lower ro 's,sai d cross pieces being carried upon the bracket 147 in which the feeding rolls 26 and 27 are mounted, said bracket being car-- ried upon the machine frame. The plate 141is impelled toward the film by springs 148 coiled about the pins 142. The pins 142 are retracted against their springs by arms 14.9 and 150, mounted respectively on shafts 151 and 152 herein. Said shafts 151 and 152 are rocked by an arm 153, which .is mounted in frame 2, and which engages with a lug 154 upon the sliding plate 100. The plate 141 is-thus drawn away from pressure against the film during the feeding thereof. Referring now to the adaptation of the device for reflection work, the lamp house 125 and its lenses are quickly and readily removed from apparatus substituted therefon. The lamp house 165, adapted for reflection work, may be mounted upon the machine or removed therefrom in the same manner as the lamp house 125. Lamp house 165 is carried on a frame 166, likewise adjustably and detachably and 8. When the device is used for reflection work the film band -or similar band is preferably not run over the front rollers 14 and 16, but is run downwardly from the roller 13 to the roller 17 ,as shown in Fig. 2. At the back of the lamp house. 165 is preferably a door 167 within which the film band :1; passes downwardly. Suitable pressure may be put upon the film band,'and for this purpose a plate 168, having its ends curved away-from the film band is mounted upon the lamp house 165. A similar having reflectors .182 and spring pressed plate 169is mounted upon the doorway 167 and is held against the film band a: by resilient pressure. The plate 169 is mounted upon four rods 170, which are reciprocably carried in apertures in the door 167 and in apertures in a spider 171 carried upon a bolt or other support 172 fixed to the door 167 Suitable springs are provided for urging the plate 169 with resilient action and with the requisitedegree of pressure against the filmband m.
The illumination which is projected upon the face of the film band is provided, as embodied,by lights 180 and 181 arranged within the lamp house 165 at 183, which pro-- ject the light upon the surface of the film as within the lamp house. The light is then reflected outwardly through projecting lens From all the foregoing. it will be understood that a machine has been provided realizing the objects of invention and advanthe machine, and the reflection mounted upon the supporting rods 7 either side, and
'ranged in pairs to direct the pared with the machine itself, which is of relatively small bulk, thereby providing a great variety of subjectmatter without changing film bands, thereby greatly enhancing the efficiency of the device both for advertising and for amusement purposes. The device is self-regulating and self-controlling in an unusual degree, as the film band always feeds in one direction, and avoids rewinding thereof, and reversal of the motor or other mechanism, and obviates all danger of the pictures getting out of register. guarded against over-heating and all danger of fire is eliminated, even with the ordinary inflammable film, thereby, obviating observation to avoid overheating.
The invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the precise mechanism shown and described, but changes may be made therein within the scope of the appended chaims without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
What I claim as my invention and desirev to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A machine for exhibiting pictures, ad-
combination a plurality ,of rollers arranged to form an endless path for a picture strip, a lamp station. with means for supporting either a projection lamp house or a reflection lamp house, and picture strip directing means, includingdevices for chrecting the strip past the lamp station either at the rear The device is also amply safevertising matter and the like, including in or the front thereof, and means for feeding the strip'internnttently.
2. A machine for exhibiting pictures, ad-
combmation a plurality of rollers firanged to form an endless path for a picture strip, a lamp station with means for supporting either a projection lamp house or a reflection lamp house, certain of said rollers being arvertising matter and the like, including in i film past the lamp station either at the rear or the front thereof, and means for feeding the stripintermittently.
3. A machine for exhibiting pictures, advertising matter and the like, including in combination a lamp house support, means for intermittently running a film strip, in-
cluding means for directing the film strip to one side or the other of said support, and a plurality of lamp houses adapted to be carried by said support, one lamp house op erating with the film before and another v and oil? the light.
5. A machine for exhibiting pictures, advertising matter and the like, including in combination a frame, means for running an endless film strip, lamp house supporting means mounted upon the frame, and a proje ction lamp house and a reflecting lamp,
house, interchangeably mountable on and demountable from said support, each provided with means cooperating with said supporting means, whereby the lamp houses maybe interchangeably used in the machine and means for adjusting said lamp houses upon said supportingmeans.
6. A machine for exhibiting pictures, advertising matter and the like, including in combination a lamp house support, means for intermittently running an endless film strip, including means for directing the film strip to one side or the other of said support, and a plurality of lamp houses adapted to be carried by said support, one lamp house operating with the film before and another lamp house operating with the film behind.
7. A machine for exhibiting pictures, advertising matter and the like, including in combination a plurality of rolls arranged in vertising matter'and the like, mcludin in a series, a plurality of rolls arranged in another series, whereby the film strip may be run across to and fro from one series to the other, and passing alternately around a roll of one series and then around a roll of the other series, means for im arting intermittent motion to the film, an means for lighting the film,v including interchangeable mountable and demountable lamp houses for projection or reflection.

9. A machine for exhibiting pictures, advertising matter and the like, including in combination a plurality of rolls arranged in a series, a plurality of rolls arranged inanother series, whereby the film strip may be run across to and fro from one series to the other, and'passing alternately around a roll of one series and then around a roll of the other series, means for positively and intermittently driving a roll thereby imparting intermittent motion to the-film, and means of one series and then around a roll of the other series, means for ositively and intermittently driving a rol thereby impartfor lighting the film, and means for interchangeably supporting a projecting lighting device or a reflecting lighting device inoperative relation with the intermittently moved film.
10. A machine for exhibiting pictures, advertising matter and the like, including in combination a plurality of rolls arranged in a series, a plurality of rolls arranged in another series, whereby the film strip may be run across to and fro from one series to the other, and passing alternately'around a roll of one series and then around a roll of the other series,'means for positively and intermittently driving a plurality of said rolls thereby impartin intermittent motion to the film means for lighting the film, and means for "interchangeably supportinga projecting lighting device or a reflectinglighting device in operative relation with the intermittently moved film.
