Be it known that I, ROBERT A. WEINHARDT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,`have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theY accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to the arrangement of an intake and exhaust manifold and the inlet and exhaust passages of the cylinder block of'a multiple-cylinder explosive engine whereby any condensation of the fuel vapor before it reaches the combustion spaces is prevented and whereby air indrawn into the carbureter is preheated provided' thecarbureter is located opposite'the manifold side of the engine.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appendedclaims.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a cylinder block with cap removed, together with a manifold, the whole embodying features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the manifold and adjacent portions of the cylinder;

, Fig.` 4 is a view in section taken on or about line IV-IV of Fig. 2, showing stops inserted in the air intake cross-passage.
As herein indicated, a cylinder block having multiple cylinders who/se bores are indicated at 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively, is provided with a transverse passage 5 that may be blocked at each end by suitable stops 6 of any preferred type. Each cylinder has an intake port 8 with inlet passage 9 thereto and an exhaust port 10 with outlet duct 11 therefrom.
A manifold 12 is arranged to be-secured against the side of the block withL gaskets 13 interposedto insure tight joints. A common intake that registers with the voutlet of with the exhaust the passage 5 opens into a fuel duct 16, whereby the indrawn fuel va or is distributed in either direction equal yl to the ports 8 of the engine through the passages 9. and outlet duct is heated by the outgoing gases and thereby any liquid of condensation which falls thereon from the indrawn fuel is quickly revaporized and returned to the yblock and manifold are obtained that are efficient in preventing condensation, that insure the supply at all times of a thoroughly vaporized charge while the block admits of the. mounting of the carbureter on either side.
Obviously, changes in the detailsof con-l struction may be made without departing from the spirit 0f my invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim is 1. The combination of a block of multiple v cylinders having a transverse passage therethrough and inlet and exhaust ports disposed in sets with the inlet openings above the exhaust openings, with a manifold having an intake passage adapted to form communication between the delivery end of the e ports and an exhaust passage below the intake passage adapted to form communication betwen the cylinder exhaust ports and the main manifold exhaust opening, the division wall between the inlet and outlet passages forming a heating surface for the condensed ortion of the indrawn charges that alls thereon.
2. The combination of a block of multiple cylinders provided with a transverse passagey between a pair of them and with inlet ports disposed in a plane above a set of outlet ports, with a combined inlet and exhaust manifold having an intake adapted to register withl the discharge Vopening of the transverse passage and a plurality of discharge openings connected to theintake by a passage and adapted to register with the intake port passages, of the cylinders, and an exaust `passage below the intake passage,
adapted to form a common communication y between the various exhaust openings of the cylinders and the'manifold discharge opening and a wall formingv a heating surface separating the passages.
3. The combination of a block of cylinders cast in multiple with a transverse passage therethrough adapted to be blocked at each end and with exhaust openings from the cylinders leading to the side of the block in a plane belowthe plane of corresponding inlet openings leading Ito the intake ports of the cylinders with a manifold adapted to be secured to the cylinder block with an intake passage having an inlet opening adapted to register with the discharge opening of the transverse passage, and a plurality of discharge openings adapted to severally register with the inlet openingA passages below the inlet duct of the cylinders and an exhaust passage separated from the inlet duct by a wall forming a heating surface and said passage forming a common communication between the various exhaust openings of the cylinders and the manifold exhaust outlet.
4. The combination of a series of cylinders cast en bloc in which a transverse pass` sage. is formed between the cylinders, each cylinder being provided with an exhaust discharge outlet from an exhaust port below the plane of an inlet opening to an .inlet port, with a combined inlet-and-exhaust manifold having an inlet passage with an intake opening adapted to register with the outlet of the transverse passage and various discharge openings adapted to register severally with the'inlet opening to the inlet ports'of the cylinder, and with an exhaust passage below the inlet passage having various exhaust inlets adapted to register with the corresponding exhaust outlets of the cylinders and to connect them with the manifold exhaust outlet, the wall between the passages in the manifold forming a heating surface for preventing condensation of fuel vapor passing through the upper inlet passage.
