Description
WINVFIELD BL-ooneoon. 1mpr0vement in Whip So cketsfl Patented April 2, I872.
PATENT WINFIELD BLOODGOOD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,258, dated April 2,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WINFIELD BLOODGOOD, of the city, county, and Stateof New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VVhip-Sockets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing formin g part of this specification, in which draw- Figure 1 is a sectional side view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a part View thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to whip-sockets made of wood; and consists in the arrangement of a metallic ferrule on the upper end thereof, being provided with a screw-thread to'receive a screwcap, which is provided with acorrespondin g thread in such a manner that by the screwferrule the wooden body of the whip-socket is prevented from splitting, and a good hold is obtained for the screw-cap. The screw-cap is also made of metal, so that the same when secured to the wooden body of the whip-socket forms aprotection for the wood and is not liable to come 011'. By combining the metallic screwcap with a metallic screw-ferrule, secured to the end of the whip-socket, the durability of the article is materially increased.
In the drawing the letter A designates a whip-socket, on the upper end of which I place a metallic ring or ferrule, a, which is fastened in its place by rivets, and provided on its pe riphery with a screw-thread, on which is fitted a metallic cap, B, which is provided with a corresponding thread on its inner surface, being provided with an opening, I), (see Fig. 3,) of a size similar to the diameter of the socket. 011 the upper edge of the socket A, and beneath the metallic cap B, I place a disk, 0, of
rubber, for the purpose of preventing the whip from falling out of the socket, the opening in the disk being smaller than the diameter of the socket, thereby causing the whip-handle to press it downward in entering the socket,in which position it will remain until the whip is removed, when it will assume its original posi tion.
When the rubber disk 0 is worn out it can be taken out and replaced by a new one, the metallic cap B being screwed off from the socket, and the disk is free to be removed.
The metallic cap B is rendered flush with the periphery of the socket by forming a shoulder, d, on the upper part of the same, on which it rests when it is screwed on the socket.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A whip-socket provided with a screw-ferrule or ring, a, for receiving a cap, B, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
