IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED PROPELLERS AND FIRE-EXTINGUISHER S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,232, dated April 2, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Propelling Vessels, invented by AL- LEN TURNER, of Bronson, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan.
Figure 1 is a stern view of a vessel to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of the propeller, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line w m, Fig. 2.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for propelling vessels, and which shall be so constructed that it may be used as a force-pump to throw water upon deck in case of fire or for other purposes.
A is a hollow cylinder, to the forward end of which is attached aflange or plate,B, which is so formed as to fit upon and be securely attached to the stern of the vessel. devices are designed to be used with each vessel, one upon each side of the rudder, and at such a distance from it as not to be in the way of the proper operation of said rudder. The devices should be attached to the stern of the vessel about upon a line with or a little above the line of the keel. The plate B is made with a cavity or air-chamber, (1, to correspond with the inner or forward end of the cylinder A. D is a shaft passing longitudinally through the cylinder A, and the rear end of which revolves in brackets or stays E attached to the rear or outer end of the cylinder A. The rear part of the shaft D passes out through the hull of the vessel, and power is applied to it in the ordinary manner. To the part of the shaftD within the cylinder A is attached or upon it are formed two or more spiral flanges or threads,
Two of the- F, fitting into the interior of the said cylinder A. G is a pipe or tube leading up from the chamber 0 to or near the deck of the vessel. The tube G is designed to supply the cylinder A with air, when the water has been forced out of said cylinder, to be forced out by the screw D Fagainst the water to propel the vessel. The tube G also serves, when the device is used, as a force pump to conduct the water to the deck of the vessel. In the under side of the wall of the chamber 0 is formed a pivoted door or valve, H, which may be opened to allow the water to escape when the screw D F is reversed for backing the vessel. The door or valve H is closed and fastened when the device is used as a force-pump or to drive the vessel forward. I is a slide, which passes from the chamber 0 into the hull of the vesse1,and which has an arm or block, J, attached to its rear end, which, when the slide I is drawn forward, forces the door or valve H shut and holds it securely fastened, the said door or valve being so constructed as to open by its own weight when the fastening is pushed back.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the screw D F with the cylinder A, provided withcha-mber G, valved opening H, and tube G, whereby the screw is adapted to be used either as a propeller for the vessel, or a means for forcing water on the deck thereof, substantially as set forth.
ALLEN TURNER.
