The improvement which I have made in heels of boots and shoes consists in the combination and adaptation of a metal shell, an elastic packing, and a cap, as herein more fully described.
The shell or metal part A of the heel has a.
suitable recess in which an elastic packing of India rubber is inserted, so as to occupy a position between the metal part of the heel and the finishing cap of leather. This spring packing is intended to aiford sufficient elasticity in walking to prevent the leather cap from being cut out so rapidly as is done when the leather cap is not provided with the rubher cushion, but is in contact with the metal. When the leather is applied directly upon the metal part of the heel, which has been deemed necessary to avoid the noise in the use of such heels, the leather is quickly worn off 5 but by the interposition of the elastic packing, as proposed and represented in the drawing, the leather cap will last much longer, and the boot or shoe will be much pleasanter to the wearer.
The economy of the metal heel is acknowledged, and when used with my improvement is not liable to any of the objections referred to.
The metal part or shell A may be made quite thin, and can be provided with a recess of any depth, in which the rubber packing B is placed. 0 denotes the leather cap secured by screws, the heads of which should be countersunk. The heel should have a slightlyconvex surface upon its face at G, to obtain the greater elasticity. The leather cap 0 may be made of a suitable size and shape to fit into the rim S, instead of overlapping its edge, as represented. The screws will be. inserted in suitable holes through the leather 0, packing B, and diaphragm X of the shell A, and their threaded portions will enter the sole of the boot or shoe, as represented.
Figs. 2 and 3 represent modifications of the heel, showing the construction upon an enlarged scale. The spurs a b o, and the ornamental corrugations around the upper edge of the metal part A, serve to retain the heel in its position, and the spurs, which enter the sole of the shoe, prevent the screws from being bent or displaced by striking the front of the heel against obstacles.
Having fully described my improvement in heels for boots and shoes, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The metal shell A, in combination with the packing B and cap (J, substantially as and for the purpose described.
