Safety Cross-Heads for Mine-Hoists, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof. p
' My invention relates to cross-heads for mine hoists and has for one of its objects to provide a safety cross-head'that shall be simple and durable in construction, positive and reliable in operation, and adapted to not only prevent the cross-head fromdropping in case the rope or cable breaks,
but also to eliminate the possibility of'its becoming accidentally stuck or hung up in the shaft.
Other objects and advantages of my 'invention will be setforth hereinafter, and in order that my invention may 'be thoroughly understood, I will now "proceed to-describe the same in the following specification and then point out the novel features thereof in appended claim. The cross-head illustrated is of the typeused in the mine hoists-and is adapted to be raised out of or lowered into a shaft with a; rope or cable,the load being supported by a bucket or other suitable carrier which is connected to the rope or cable, after it extends through a guide in the cross-head. Cross-heads of this type are very heavy and may do considerable damage if one 1s accidentally hung up in the shaft for any cause and then drops onto the bucket after the latter has been lowered away from it. It has been my aim to provide a safety device for preventing accidents ofthis character and also for preventing the dropping of the bucket in case the rope or cable should break above the cross-head.
As clearly shown in the drawings the cross-head comprises a trams built up of Specification of Letters Patent.

This sleeve-may be secured in any suitable manner, as for example by being screwed 1nto a block 16 as clearly shown 1n Fig. 3,
and it may be conveniently formed of a pipe section.
It has a slot 17 in one side through which a pawl 18 extendsas hereinafter explained.
A pair of yokes or clevises 19 and 20 are secured in an upright position between the sides of the box beam 13 and are located one on each side of the sleeve 14 which is in the center ofthe cross-head. A horizontal yoke 21 having a ring-shaped center 22 through which the cable 15 extends, is sus pended by'links 34- and 35 as explained be low and has connected to it spring guide rods 23 and 24 which extend through suitable holes in the" top of the clevises 19 Near the respective ends of the box beam 13 are a pairof cross pins 30 and 31 on 'which'are mounted cam jaws 3233. The
'oam jaws are actuated by theyoke-21 to which they are connected by links 34-36' and 35-37. The arrangement of parts is such that the links 36'and 37 are rigidly fixed relative to the cam jaws 32 and 33, either directly or through the pins 30 and 31," and consequently "when the yoke'21- is moved upwardly in opposition to the springs the cam jaws are rotated on their pivots and are released from the guideways 8 and '9 with which the flanged shoes 10 and 11 cooperate.
A collar 39 is clamped to the sleeve 14 near its lower end and supports the pawl 18 which is pivotally mounted upon it and extends upwardly through the slot 17 in the sleeve. Secured to a pin 40 on which the pawl 18 is pivoted is a lever 41 which extends through a guide strap 42 on the shoe 10 and is adapted to be actuated manually for the purpose of releasing the pawl.
