PROCESS AND DEVICE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF REAL ORIENTAL CARPE'IS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, M611 BANYAI, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Tolna, Comitat Tolna, in the Kingdom of Hungary, have invented new and useful Improved Processes and Devices for the Manufacture of Real Oriental Carpets, of which the following is a specification.
Processes have already been proposed for the manufacture of oriental rugs, but n practice they are very expensive and in many cases quite impossible, as it is very diflicult to knot the pile threads around the warp threads. The known devices for the carrying out of these processes are very complicated and hitherto it was impossible to construct a simple and reliable knotting apparatus.
The main object of my invention is to avoid the difficulties previously experienced and for this purpose the pile threads are not knotted around the warp, but the main warp threads are brought into a position in which it is possible to grip the pile thread lying between them and to draw it through the warps. After this is effected and the warp threads are returned to their original position the knot is finished without the necessity of knotting the pile thread.
The manner of carrying out my invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device according to my invention,

Fig. 3 shows the pile thread drawn through the warps and Fig. 4 shows the finished knot.
The knot is made of the ground or'main warp threads a, a and of the pile thread I). For the producing of the knot a lifting bar at is used the top portion of which is provided with grooves 6, e By means of this bar a pair of warp threads at, a is lifted so that these threads after they are placed in the grooves e, e converging toward the pile thread 6 are on their side away from the pile separated wider apart from each other than on the opposite side (Fig. 1). Now two parallel hooks 0, o are passed along the reduced neck part 7 of the bar cl so that they grip the pile I). Then the lifting bar (2 is let down and the hooks are drawn back (Fig. 3), so that the warps can be straightened. After the warps are straightened the knot is finished (Fig. 4).
The grooves of the lifting bar 03 may also be parallel to each other, in which case the drawing apart of the warp threads is effected in that manner that the hooks 0, 0 after they have passed through the lifted warp threads a, a are on their end turned awa from the pile drawn apart so that the warp threads assume the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The ground warp threads may also be brought into the position shown in Fig. 1 without use of a lifting bar cl by being raised from above, for example by two devices resembling needles of knitting machines. The needles grip the warp threads with their hooks and the latter are provided with tongues which hold the warps as they are lifted and release them as they are returned to their normal position.
The drawing shows a Smyrna carpet knot but it is evident that my invention also may be used for the production of Persian carpet knots. For this purpose it is only necessary to change the direction of the grooves of the lifting bar.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The method of manufacturing oriental rugs which consists in raising, by means of a bar having spaced grooves, two adjacent warp threads, and then passing a pile thread first around and then between the said two warp threads, substantially as described.
2. In mechanism for manufacturing oriental rugs, a bar having a reduced neck portion and formed with converging grooves at the end to receive two threads and capable of raising the threads into position to allow a pile warp to be drawn transversely around and then between the threads to form a Smyrna knot.
