SWIMMING-HARNESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1917.
Application filed January 29,1917. Serial No. 145,279.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT W. LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Traverse City, in the county of Grand Traverse and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swimming-Harness, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to an improved swimming harness and the principal object of the invention is to provide a harness so constructed that it may be securely connected with the body of the user, shoulder straps and a body strap being provided and an inflatable tube being connected with the shoulder straps and positioned about the chest of the wearer.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this harness that the same may include a single tube inflated from a valve and so held in place that it will not interfere with movement of the arms and to further so construct the device that when in place, the harness cannot slip loose.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein there is disclosed a perspective of the improved swimming harness.
The inflatable tube 10 which resembles a. tire is formed of rubber and is inflated through the valve 11, the valve being of any conventional construction, such for instance as used in connection with the inner tube of vehicle tires. This tube 10 will be placed about the chest and will be suspended from the shoulders by the shoulder straps 12 which straps pass around the tube and are secured as shown at 13. The chest encircling strap 14 is engagedby movable supports 15 thus slidably mounting the chest encircling strap and permitting it to be easily adjusted to the proper position and then tightened.
When this device is in use, the tube 10 will be positioned about the body and can be inflated either before or after being put in place. After the tube 10 is in place, the arms will be passed through the shoulder straps 12 above the chest encircling band or strap 14 and after the supports 15 have been vertically adjusted the chest encircling strap will be tightened about the chest and secured by the buckle 16 thus securely holding the device in place and preventing the shoulder straps from slipping from the shoulders. WVith this device in place, a person will be suspended in the water and can float about for an indefinite length of time thus preventing danger of drowning.
What is claimed is l. A swimming harness comprising a body encircling tube formed of resilient material and having a valve controlled inlet, shoulder straps connected with the tube, and a chest encircling strap slidably connected with the shoulder straps for passing about the chest beneath the arms of the wearer.
2. A swimming harness comprising an inflatable body encircling tube, shoulder straps connected with the body encircling tube, and a chest encircling strap adjustably connected with the shoulder straps for movement longitudinally upon the shoulder straps.
3. A swimming harness comprising an inflatable body encircling tube, shoulder straps having their end portions passed about the tube and secured to provide eyes through which the tube passes, supports adjustable upon the shoulder straps, and a chest encircling strap passing between the supports and shoulder straps forslidable connection with the shoulder straps.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
