1 GUIDE ron ACLEArriere-BonsY or` rlEABins. y.
To .all whomrz't` may concern.' Y i Be it known that Ldiniio E. LANFRANCO,
Y a citizen of the Republic ofl Ghile, residing Vat Valparaiso,` Chile', have invented certain new `anduseiiul Improvemei'its in Guides for Cleaning-Rods of Firearms; and I do hereby fdeclare the following to `be a full, clear, and
exact` description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention fis a .guide and operating handle for cleaning rods, so constructed that,
l when the cleaning rod is pushed or drawn through the bore oi'' a rifle, it will follow the rifling` of the bore.
The invention isillustrated in the accom-` lAs shown in the drawing, the guide is made up of an inner cylindrical member 1, whichis to be secured to the cleaning rod, and an outer sleeve or handle member 2.
The. inner cylindrical member 1 is about 17.5 centimeters long. At one end it has a hole 3 of about 6.5 millimeters diameter in which the end of the cleaning rod is placed and secured by means of a pin or piece of wire 4, extending through a small hole.
The inner cylindrical member 1 has a helical portion 5, about 5.5 centimeters long, and
i a smooth cylindrical portion 6, about 8.5
centimeters long, and 7 millimeters in diameter. The helical portion has four helical threads 7 which run from right to left.
The outer sleeve member or handle 2 is a `hollow cylinder about 9 centimeters long,
i having at o ne end an opening 8 which slides Y on the cylindrical portion 6 of the inner cient to permit the teeth 9 to slip thereon, so
' that, as the handle or sleeve 2 is pushed along the cylindrical member 1, it will cause the latter to turn.
The sleeve 2 is held on the cylindricalV member 1 by a nut 10 screwed on the threaded end 11 of the member 1, so that the sleeve specffcatio'of Letters ratent- Patented` Dec. 25, 1917. Application iled` July 13, 191'?. Serial No. 180,345; i i
` W hen the guide is4 secured toa cleaning rod, and the cleanino rod pushed or drawn through the bore of the rifle by grasping the sleeve 2 and pushing or pulling thereon, the Vaction of the teeth 9 on the threads 7 will causethecleaning rod to have both a longitudinal and rotary movement, so that it will follow the riling in the bore, and more ef- `fectively clean the same. 'i The handle or sleeve 2 thus serves vboth to push the cleaning rod and to turn it. The four teeth take the place of complementary screws or threads, operating on the helical threads 7 buthave the advantage of decreasing the friction so that the slipping or sliding on the threads 7 is made easier.
The inclination of the threads 7 is such that the mere pushing or pulling on the handle or sleeve 2 will cause the cleaning` rod to turn as it advances in the rifle, and to follow the riiings thereof.
My invention has the following advantages:
It can be attached to cleaning rods without destroying or modifying them.
It operates mechanically, making the cleaning rods turn as they advance in the bore of the riiie. Its operation is sure and accurate.
It is simple and easy to construct, as well as easy to assemble and repair.
It can be made of iron or other metal which is cheap and abundant. Its size is such (only about 17.5 centimeters) that it occupies only a little space.
Its operation requires a straight pushing of the cleaning rod which nevertheless rotates as it advances. A turn of the h andle corresponds to a turn in the spiral rifling.
Its operation is simple and does not require any experience, but only a simple and single explanation.
It consists of only two operating parts, which slip or slide on each other with a relative spiral movement.
Its action is based on the spiral or helical slipping, corresponding to the measure of the rilling. l
It operates positively, somewhat in the nature of a screw driver.
Inasmuch as the cleaning rod is turned as it advances, so that it QllQws thertling of l0 v andfhavin'g "teeth oopverating with fthe h'elir Jhe ,1 rifle,rv less gsiirength is reqliired ovtoforce the cleaning rod through the riflef;
