Description

F. C. FRANK CAR DOOR LOCK. APPLICATION H/LED JULY 6. I917.
Patented Dec. 18, 1917.
, WITNESSES UNIT D TOP C FREDERICK orRAnK, or wnI'sEB; IDAHO. 1
' CAR-DOOR LOCK;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known thatl, FREDERICK C. FRANK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Weiser, in the county of Washington and State of Idaho, have invented a new and Improved Car-Door Lock, of which the following is a full,'.clear, and exact descrip-v tion. 1 v I This invention relates to dumpingcars or carts and has particular reference to that type of such devices inwhich the body is tiltable around a horizontal axis for. du1np ing of the contents thereof by gravity, the
material to be dumped being' normally held in the body by meansof a door hung upon a horizontal axis at or adjacent to the upper portion of the car body. (Bythe term car as used herein I desiretherefore to be understood as covering any-vehicle for the conveyance and dumping of loose bulk material. This present improvement furthermore has nothing particularly to do with tomatic means for locking the door closed and holding. it in such position whilethe car,- body is-held in normal carrying orltrans-;, porting position, but being so designed that when the, body is tilted the lock will be antomatically released'by reason of themovement ofvthe body into tilted or inclined po- 1 sition with respect to thebase to which the body isipivoted and upon which'thebody is normally supported in transporting position. a
A further object of the invention is to provide a locking means for the swinging or pivoted door so designed that the door will not only be unlocked'when the body is tilted but will be given a positive impulse toward its open position to prevent the possible st cking thereof. 1 I 1 A still further object is to provide a locking means for-a car body-door which will not only be operated automatically to engage and hold the door when the body is* swung down into normal or horizontal position. but will positively cause the door to be closed snugly.
With'the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangedescribed and claimed, and while the invenconstruction disclosed or suggested herein,
stillfor the purpose ofillustrating a-prac tica]. "embodiment. thereof reference" had {s eci cation of Letters Z Patentf P wn ea D b 1917; Application filedJulyfi, 1917.- serial 178,925 I 1 tion isnot'restricted'to the exact details of to the accompanying drawings, in'which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 1s a s1de elevation of a car'- equipped with my. improvement, the door being held closed by my improved-lock.
Fig. 2 is arear elevation ofthe same; and

respect to the n g v Referring now more particularly to the drawingsI show a car'comprising wheels 10, a frame or base 11 supported thereon for movement as usual along a track or roadway represented by the rails 12, and a body 13;supported normally upon the base 11 and '80 held from'trelative movementvwith respect. thereto by a. fastener 14'. As is customary in cars of this type the body is connected to I i the base for tilting movement around a transverse horizontal piv'otxx15 atthe: rear end thereof. i a j 1 a .T he door 16 adaptedto close the rear and end of the. base, theapi'vot being approxi 1 mately midwaybetween thetransverse cen' tor of the bottom of the-body and the rearthe axis of this hinge being parallel to the pivot 15. The vertical plane, however, 0f.
the pivot 17 .isspaced' to the rear of the cor-" responding plane of the pivot 15. The'cloor carriesa pair of lugs 18 which lie inaline ment with each other and wh ch-for convenience may be the ends of the same bar- 19 secured upon: the outer face of thedo'or the upper and lower edges of'the door.
100 16 and-at any convenient elevation between 'uGoZiperatinsr'with each lug 18]is alocking member 20 pivoted 'upon' 'astud 21 and comprising at least three distinct vfea'tures' as follows: An upwardly proj cting arm 22,
an outwardlv -and downwardly projecting hook93, and a downwardly and rearwardly extending cam 2-1; there being provided a space between the hook and the cam to accommodate and receive a lug 18. The stud 21 is carried upon the car bo y adjacent to
