@riginal application led July 19, i915, Serial No. 40,678. Divided and this application filed February il.,
1916. Seria1No.77,628.
To all whom z'L" may concern Be' it known that I, GEORGE D. Poeme, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri7 have invented la certain new and useful Improvement in Liquid Fuel Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This application is a divisionof my copending application Serial No. 40,678, filed July 19, 1915, for variable feed pumps.
The invention described in the present application consists in a liquid fuel pump 1n which the Valves are of a novel construction that facilitatestlie removal of saine and also enables the passageway between the inlet and outlet valves to be drained Without removing the valves.
Figure l of the drawings is a transverse sectional View, illustrating one cylinder of the pump and the valves that coperate with said cylinder.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational View, partly in vertical section, of the cylinder casting or body portion of the pump in which the cylinders are formed; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View, taken on approximately the line 3-3 or' Fig. 2.
.Referring to the drawings, which illnstrate the preferred form of my invention, 22 designates the cylinder casting or bpdy portion of the pump in which the cylinders B Aare Jformed, the pump comprising,` three cylinders and three plungers A that reciprocate in said cylinders. Each. cylinder 'is provided with an inlet valve l and one or more discharge valves 2 which are so designed that the valves of any cylinder can be removed easily Withont cutting the other cylinders of' the pump ont of operation. Said valves are also-so constructed that the passageway between the inlet and discharge valves of any cylinder can be drained Without removing the valves. ball type, are arranged in vertical alinement with each other, preferablyin front of. the cylinder B with which they coperate in e vertically-disposed hole or opening in the member 22. The upper end of the opening in .the member 22, in which the Valves of one e linder are arranged, is closed by a removalile cap 2e, and the lower end of said opening is closed by e removable cap 25 isybicli The valves l and 2, which are of carries a manually-operatecl valve 26. The inletl valve l is provided with a cage 1El that is screwed into the member 22 and the discha rge valves 2 are both provided with separate cages 2, the bottom one being seated in a pocket in the member 22 and the top. one being screwed into the member 22.. The inlet and discharge valves of all of the cylinders are arranged in transverse alinenient with each edlen-preferably in front of the cylinders, and a supply pipe 27 leads to a channel 28 in the member 22 that is common to all of the cylinders, or, in' otherfwords, which supplies the fuel or other li uid being pumped to all of the cylinders. lli duct 29 leads from each of the cylinders B to the passageway between the inlet and discharge valves of said cylinder and at the lower end of said duct is a. rcmojvable closure 29a, as shown in Fig'. l, that enables said duct. and cylinder to be cleaned. Horizontallydis posed discharge ducts 28a that are formed 1n the member between the cylinders B, as shown in Fig. 3, lead from the discharge valves of the respective cylinders to discharge pipes 28h. The manually-operated valve 26 previously mentioned is provided with a stem which is so constructed. that when vit is screwed upwardly into the Dosition shown in Fig. l no fuel can pass from the channel 2S into the particular cylinder with which said valve 26 coperates. The stem of said valve. 26 is provided at its upper end with an extension 26, shown in Fig. l, that unscnts the inlet. valve 1 ivhen said Valve 26 is closed` and thus permits the contents of the passageway between the inlet and discharge valves to escape through a duct/26" that is 4formed in the stein of said valve, the Valve 2G being provided with a pet cock or other suitable device 26, that controls the duct in the stem of the valve. lf it is desired to examine or clean the valves of a certain cylinder, this can be accomplished Witl1- out cutting the other cylinders ont of operation by merely closingthe valve 26, so as to cut olithe supply of fuel to that particolar cylinder, and if it is desired to drain the passageway between the inlet and discharge valves of a certain cylinder Without removing said valves, thisV can be, effected by merely closing the yalve 26 and .opening` the pet cock 26 at the lower end of y said valves-,- so as to permit the contents of said naissancmy; man; vez: n
