i roonronfnnrmrsnme JounnALsl To all whom it may concern: Be it known thatI, KAnL R. PETERS, a c 1t1- zen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, tain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Refinishing Journals, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to a tool for refinishing journals and particularly relates to a hand tool for use upon work which cannot be conveniently mounted in a lathe.
The object of my invention is to construct a tool which is suitable for shafts or journals of different diameters, a further object of my invention is to so construct the tool that the several cutting surfaces may be simultaneously moved closer to a given center by a single adjustment; a further object of my invention is to provide a tool in which the diametrically opposite cutting surfaces will always assume similar tangents to a true circle, touching allthe cutting surfaces, and thus maintaining diametrically opposite cutting surfaces in parallel relation to each other. By constructing the tool in this manner an eccentric shaft may be turned down to a true concentric form.
In carrying out my invention I arrange the members, carrying the cutting surfaces, in the form of a parallelogram and provide the form of the same.
Referring to the accompanying drawing .Figure 1. is a front elevation of my improved cutting tool showing a portion thereof in section and Fig. 2. is a side elevation of Fig. 1. r
In the drawing in which like reference characters refer to like parts, 1, 2,3, and 4, represent the frame members pivotally-connected together by the pivot pins 5 and forming a parallelogram.
The frame members are provided upon the inner surfaces thereof with abrading surfaces 6, which may be formed upon the frame members or upon separate pieces and secured to the frame members.
Handles 9 and 10 are provided upon the frame members for rotating the frame membersaround a shaft or journal 12, which represents the work upon which the tool is being used.
An adjusting device provided for holding the frame members in a certain position and for adjusting the frame to accommodate shafts of different sizes.
have invented cerbar carried by one Upon the handle 9 slidably mounted a sleeve let provided with a set-screw for securing the'sleeveto the handle. A brace 17,
'frame members; preferably to the-frame "member 3 which is pivoted to the frame handle 9, and form-'- member at carrying the ing part of the adjusting device.
The brace 17 consists of two telescoping members 20 and 21 and a varying the length of the brace. The thumb nut 22 is screw threaded and engages the threaded rod 20. A collar 24 upon the thumb nut embraces a tube 21.
The frame members may be quickly adjusted to fit a shaft by changing the position of the'sleeve 14 on the handle 9 and after the sleeve is tightly secured on the handle, pressure may be exerted by the thumb nut 22, brace 17 and thus cause the cutting surfaces carried by the frame members to bear with greater force upon the shaft or work 12. I
The pivot pins 5 are provided with screw threads upon their ends'for securing them in the frame members. The pins 5 may be readily removed to. disconnect adjacent frame members for the purpose of placing the frame members around ,aournal having enlarged ends;
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-
1. A cutting tool comprising frame members pivotally connected together, a cutting surface upon one of the frame members, a of the frame members, a brace carried by another one'of the frame members and anadjustable connection between th said bar and the said brace.
2. A cutting tool comprising frame members pivotally connected together, a cutting surface upon oneof the frame members, a bar carried by one of the frame members, a brace carried by another one of the frame members and secured to said bar, and means for varying the length of the brace.
. 3. A cutting tool comprising frame members pivotally connected together, surface upon one of the frame members, a bar carried by one of the frame members, a brace carried by another one of the frame members, means for adjustably connecting flange 25 upon the Specification of Letters Patent. brace carried" by an other one of the frame members, a sleeve adjustahlypsecuredupon th said bar, a pivot pin connecting the brace to-thesleeve and a threaded nut upon the 1 brace for-varyingthe lengthofthe brace.
'5. A cuttin'g'tool comprising fourframe ---members pivotallyconnected together and forming a"; parallelogram; an abradlng sur- 1 face upon one of theframe members, a bar and abrace between Which the said frame -n'1em-bers aremountedyand means for adjustably connecting the said bar and the said brace together whereby the position of the said frame members may be changed in relation to each other. -@Intestimony-whereof I aflix my signature'in the presence of two Witnesses.
