MOSES JOHNSON, OF THREE RIVERS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-WHEELS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that MosEs JOHNSON, of Three Rivers, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, has invented a new andvaluable Improvement in Spring Wheels; and he does hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and. to the letters and figures of reference .marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a face view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a central sectional View of the same.
This invention has relation to sprin g-wheels for wagons and other vehicles; and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the hub and the curved elastic spokes, as and for the purpose hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents sisting of two coinciding parts notched on their inner faces, so that when brought together radial sockets will be formed for the reception of the inner ends of the elastic arms or spokes.
by means of bolts 0. D represents the axleboX, having a cylindrical interior, so that the wheel may fit the axle-arm from either side. E indicate the spokes, consisting of flattened strips of elastic metal. The inner ends of two spokes are placed into each of the hub-sockets. They then cc diverge in a curvilinear direction toward the rim, near which they are bent.
The spring-wheel herein described, provided with the elastic S-shaped spokes E, arranged in isometric pairs, the spokes of each pair touching each other only at the point of junction with the hub, and touching the adjacent spokes at the shoulders of their curvature, substantially in the manner specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MOSES JOHNSON. Witnesses:
CLARENCE E. WILBUR, E1). L. BROWNE.
