Description

H, HOLDEN. MABGINAL S R|P FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
APPLICATION man APR. 5. tan.
Patented D00. 18,1917- r Inventor:

MA RGINAL STRIP FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 191i. 3*
Application filed April 5, 1917. Middle. 160,031.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HmAM HOLDEN, a citizen of the United States and resident of Manchester, N. H., have invented certain 6 new and useful Improvements in Marginal Strips for Boots and Shoes, of whichthe following is *a specification. 7
My present invention relates to the manufacture of boots and shoes and particularly 10 to a form of border strip, being an adapte- .tiou of'the invention made the subject of Letters Patent granted August 8th, 1916,
i No. 1,193,687, and No. 1,193,688, for use in connection with the production of what is 16 known as McKay and welt shoes. In the making of these shoes with box toes steam is used l'otemper the box so it can be made to conform readily to the shape of the last, and the sized cloth strip alone referred to v ,20 in my earlier pntents would not give the results desired to be obtained, as the steaming process wmdd wilt it. I have aimed to adapt my invention for'use in connection with these types of shoes and also for use with what is known as brogans or extra heavy mens shoes, the change consisting in utilizing with the paper strip of my former patents a bueking of plain or sized cloth which is secured to the strip by gum or 80 other medium, and my intention contemplates the use with this backing oi a strip on oneor both sides of the cloth. The completed strip can be either lapped or butted to the portion it is attached to.
In the accompanying drawing shown the cloth alone, deemin 1t unnece sary to show it in connection with the up or of a shoe. in all other respects, except't at indicated, the method of use'is exactly-es heretofore described.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 shows the strip in elevation.
Fig. 2 a section of'the same, and
Fig 3 is a, modification in section show 141 ing two paper strips with the sized cloth between.
I have In 'hese figures my corrugated strip of thin stiff materiel, preferably paper, shown at A and secured to it is a strip of sized cloth B. The two strips may be se-- be cured together by gum in an suitable manner, whether by applying t e gum to the paper and pressing the paer and cloth found-Quit sized cloth alone cannot be used with results in the manufacture of this type ,iaffshoes for the reason that the steam-fwoulel instantly remove the sizing but by' using the-outer covering of paper and the inner supporting-strip of sizedcloth I prerent'the wilting of the strip by the supportlng medium of the cloth and I protect the sized cloth from the action ofthe steam by the outer layer or layers of pa or.
The method of attaching is as hereto ore 76 described, except that in the manufacture of shoes-0f the McKay type the stri would not be cut away, as stated in my ear ier Paeent No, 1,193,687.
