To all whom'z't may concern:
Be it "known that I, ZERAH' G. HAYDEN, a
citizen of "the United States, residing'at Eldora, in the county of Hardin and State 7 same.
The primary object of this inventionis the provision ofa novel .formof ladder designed to be associatedwith a standard, in the-nature of a post or pole or mastyor with a building structure, so as to admit of the ascent ofa person'to'the top of a standard or structure being effected in, a convenient, safe and expeditious manner; also to admit of the descent of the person-from the top of the pole being effected inl a similar manner. Y
Another object of the invention is the 'pro vision of a device of this character that will be of simple and durable construction,'can be readily mounted in operative position, and which includes a .series of steps or rungs which can be conveniently adjusted so as to be set at various distances apart.
Other object swill appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part'thereof, in which: i 5
Figure "1 is aside elevation of a fence structure, showing a fence post equipped with a ladder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view ofthe upper end of one ofthe ladder sections, showing the same detached from operative position, and showing the manner of connecting one of the steps or rungsthereto,
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of step or rung, and
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of an- T other modified form of step or rung.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the letter A designates a fence structure and B a fence post.- Associated with the post B is a ladder formed of a pair of sections mounted, respectively, on opposite sides of the post, as shown in Fig.- 1-. Each section includes Specification of Iletters r am.

a standard 1, whichengages along the adjaj cent side of the post and has its upper end bent lJOPIOVlClG afian'ge 2, which overlies the upper end of the post and is secured thereto in any suitable manner. Each standard 1 is provided at spaced points throughout its length with outwardly offset portions '3, and each offset portion-3 has stamped therefrom a pair ofinwardly extending tongues 4, which are of L-shape in configuration." Mounted on" each of the standards 1 is a plurality of'steps, or rungs, designated 5, Each of the steps or {rungs'5 is of L-shape, having a vertical portion 6 and a horizontal portion 7.- The horizontal portion 7 of each step or rung 5 is provided,
adjacent the point of juncture between the vertical portiontl and'the horizontal portion 7, with a slot 8 for the passage of the adj acent standard 1, and the vertical portions 6 of the stepsor rungs 5 lie, asshown in Figs.
1, 2 and 3, at the rear or inner side of the adjacent standard 1. The vertical-portion 6 of each step or rung is provided with a cutout portion to provide an opening 9, through which projects one of the tongues 4, and the upper. wall of the opening 9 is provided with a recess '10, which receivesthe horizontal 1 portion of the adjacent L shapedtongue 4, as shown in Fig. 3. The slot 8 in the horizontal'portion 7 of each step or rung 5 communicate s'with' a recess '11 formed in the loweredge of the part of the adjacent vertical portion 6, and thesaid recess 11 receives the horizontal portion of another of-the Lshaped tongues 4, asshown in Fig. 2.' The tongues t effectively support the steps or rungs 5 on the standards'l. The horizontal portions 7 of the steps or rungs 5, illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, are
provided, adjacent their outer ends with slots 12, so as to provide hand -g' rips 13, which can be convenientlygripped by 'a'person during the act of ascending or descending the laddenf j, v p the drawings, a modified form of step or rung is illustrated, andis shown consisting of an L-sh'aped member In Fig. 4 of having a vertical portion 15 and a horizontal portion 16. The horizontal portion 16 is of a width considerably greater than the width of the vertical portion 15 and is provided, at points on opposite sides of the vertical portion 15, with openings or cutout portions 17 to provide handv grips 18. The horizontal portion was also provided with an opening 19 for the passage of the standard 1 with which the said step or rung is to be associated. The verticalportion15 of the step or rung, illustrated in Fig. 4, is provided with a cutout portion 20 for-the passage of one of the L-shaped tongues 4, and the upper end of the cutout portion or opening 20 is restricted, as at 21,.to'provide a recess for the reception of the horizontal portion of one ofthe L-shaped t ngues-when the step or rung is mounted on one of the sections. The lower end of the vertical portion 15 is also provided with a recess 22 for the accommodation of another of the 'L- shaped tongues 4 when the step or rung is mounted on one of the sections 1. A pair of inclined brace arms 24: have connection, respectively, with the vertical sides of the vertical portion 15 of the step, illustrated in Fig. 4, and with the horizontal portion 16 thereof, and serve to reinforce the points of connection between the vertical portion 15 and horizontal portion 16,, and also to serve asradditional hand grips for a "person during the act of ascending or descending the ladder. 4
The step or rung illustrated in Fig. .5 is
similar to those disclosed in Figs. 1, 2 and 8, having a recess 25 at the point of connection between the vertical and horizontal portions for the passage of the standard 1 to which the step stud is to be connected,'and the vertical portion is provided with an opening which has its upperend communicating with a recess 27 for the reception of the horizontal portion of one of the L- shaped tongues 4t, when the step is mounted on the standard, and the lower end of the vertical portion is provided with another rebe understood that the same can be mounted at the corner of a building, or it can be mounted on a telegraph pole, the mast of a sh p, or similar standards. However, the
we P h s patent a 12 attains ta ladder is designed, particularly, to be associated with a fence post, soas to admit of a person scalingthe fence without coming in contact with the panel of the fence.
As shown in Fig. 1, the post is provided, at the upper end thereof, with an extension 30, which provides a hand hold which can be gripped person upon reaching the top of the post.
It is evident that various chan es might be resortedto in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. a
\Vhat I claim is:
l. A ladder of the class described comprising a pair ofsections each consisting of a standard having a series of tongues stamped therefrom, andv a plurality of steps of L shape in configuration and having horizontal portions provided with slots for thepassage of the standards, and h i -th vertical portions provided with recesses for the reception of the tongues on the standa ds,
'2. A ladder comprising a pair of standards, a. plurality of steps associated with each of the standards and including a horizontal portion having a slot therein for passage-ofthe adjaeentstandard and a vertical portion having detachahleconnection with the standard, andhand gripsforined on the horizontal portions of-the steps.
3. A ladder including a standard, a plurality of steps associated with the-standard and each consisting of a vertical portion for detachable connection with the standard, and ahorizontal portion having a corrugated surface thereon, and provided with hand grips for the purpose specified. I at. A ladder including a standard, a plurality of steps associated with the standard and each consisting of a vertical portion and a horizontal portion carried by the Vertical portion, inclined bracing elements having connection, respectively, with the vertical portion and the horizontal portion, and hand grips formed on the horizontal por- .tion.
