Be it known that 1, Greece G. WHITNEY, a citizen of the UnitedStates of America,
' residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and btateeof Michigan, have invented ccrtain new and useful Improvements in Internal-Grinding Machines, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being bad therein to, the accompanying drawil igs.
This invention relates to internal grinding machines, turret lathes, and boring machines, and my invention aims to provide a manually fed machine wherein simple and effective means are employed, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, to facilitate the operations m connection with the machines,

In describing my invention by aid of the views above referred to, I desire to point out that the same are merely illustrative of the machine asn'ow actually used, and I do not care to confine myself to the 'precise construction andarrangement of parts shown,

In the drawing, 1 denotes a machine bed for frame and slidable on top thereof is a bed plate 2 of a headstock 3. The lower face of the bed plate 2 has a longitudinalrack 4 and meshing therewith is a pinion 5 carried by a shaft 6, journaled in a bearing 7, carried by the front wall of the frame 1. The outer end of the shaft 6 has a large hand wheel 8 which permits of an operator or attendant of the machine rapidly revolving the shaft (3 to feed the bed plate 2 longitudinally.

9 denotes the base member of a tool carriage 10 and said base member spans or bridges the bed plate 2 and is suitably conneeted to the sides of the frame 1, as at 11. The tool carriage 10 can be adjusted transversely of the base member 9 by the usual feed screw mechanism, generally denoted 12,

16 denotes a drive shaft arranged longitudinally of the frame 1 and 17 denotes a driven shaft in a horizontal plane with the shaft 16 and yournaled in suitable bearings 18 carried by the frame 1. The driven shaft 17 has fixed and loose pulleys 19 so that said shaft may be driven by a belt from a suitable source of power, and a belt shifting de lce,
generally designated 19 is'arranged to control the operation of the driven shaft 17 relative to its source of power.
20 denotes a large belt wheel on the driven shaft 17 and above this arge belt wheel, on the tool carriage 10, are brackets 21 supporting the shaft having a small belt wheel 29 and a large belt wheel 23. Trained over the large beltwheel and the small pulley 14 is abelt 24 and trained about the large belt Wheel 20 of the driven shaft 17 and small belt.
wheel 22 is a belt 25. Engaging the belt 25 maybe shifted to increase or decrease the speed of the shaft 16 relative to the s)eed of the driven shaft 17 by a belt shi ting mechanism 30 operable at the front wall of the frame 1. The belt shifting mechanism 30 may be manually adjusted and set so as to obtain a desired speed in connection with the drive shaft 16. The stepped pulley 27 of the shaft 16 is loose thereon and is adapted to be fixed for rotation with the shaft 16 by a clutch 31 of a conventionalform. The clutch 31 is operated by the short arm 82 of a rock shaft 3 arranged transverselyof the frame 1 and on the lower end of the arm 82 is an adjustable brake shoe 3% adapted to engage a brake wl'u el 35 on the haft 16, so that after the clutch is thrown out and the shaft 16 independent of the driven shaft 17, the rotation of the drive shaft 16 may be retarded and eventually stopped.
36 denotes a long arm or lever on the front end of therock shaft 33 and said arm is pivotally connected. as at 37, to an adjustable plunger 38 operable/in a cylinder 39 carried by the frame 1. The plunger 38, within the cylinder 39, has a head 10, andengaging said head is a coiled compression spring 41 adapted to hold the plunger 38 normally elevated, and adapted to automatically throw in the clutch 31. The tension of the spring 11 may be increased or decreased by an adjustable cylinder plug 4-1.
42 denotes a cam member carried by the bed )late2 of the headstock 3 and this cam mem )(31' is adapted to impinge against the upper end of the plunger 38 and gradually lower said plunger, so that the clutch 31 is automatically thrown out when the headstock 3 assumes normal position.
When the :am member 42 recedes by shifting the headstock toward the tool carriage, the spring 41 automatically throws in the clutch 31, so that the workholder is rc-L 'volved.
43 denotes a long pulley on the drive shaft 16 and 441 is a pulley of the l'ieadstfock 3 which is driven from the long' pul ey +13 by a belt 45. The headstocktl, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3 has a pneumatic or otherwise actuated chuck or workholder tti and said headstock is adapted to be moved to and from the tool carriage by the manually actuated feed iluurlianisin including the elements 4 to 8 inclusive. The headstockmay be carefully moved toward the tool carriage so that the grinding head or emery wheel 15 may operate upon a piece of work held by the chuck or workholder 46 and after the grinding operation has been performed. the operator or attendant of the machine from the tool carriage. In doing so, the operator or attendant of the machine need not pay any attention to the return moveeration of the drive shaft 10 While the shaft 17 is driven. As the workholder or chuck is brought to a standstill by the brake mechanism, the cam member 12 has limited the return movennsnt of the headstock and another piece of work can be casil placed in the chuck or workholder or other adjustments made. When the hand wheel 8 is turned to feed the workholdcr toward the grinding head. the cam -12 releases the plunger 38 and the spriln, -11, which has been placed under compression. now expands and in so doing elevates the plunger and automatically throws in the clutch 31, so that the workholder will be driven to permit of the grinding head operating upon a piece of work.
hat I claim is:-
1. A machine of the type described comprising a frame, a reciprocable bed plate on said frame, manually actuated means for reciprocating said bed plate a tool carriage, a headstock carried by said bed plat. and provided with a workholder and adapted L0 be placed in operable relation to said tool carriage, a drive shaft carried by said frame and adapted, for operating said workholder, a clutch controlling the operation of said drive shaft, means actuated by a return n'iovement of said headstock adapted to throw out said clutch, and means brought into action by an outward movement of said clutch to cause a cessation in the movement of said drive shaft.
2. A machine of the type described comprising a frame, a tool carriage, a headstock movable to and from said tool carriage, manually actuated means for moving said headstock, a drive shaft carried by said frame for operating said headstock, a clutch associated with said drive shaft for controlling the operation thereof, a cam member movable with said headstock, and means actuated by said cam member for throwing out said clutch and causing a cessation in the operation of said headstock.
3. A machine of the type described comprisin a frame, a, tool carriage, a headstock movabe to and from said tool carriage manually actuated means carried by said frame adapted for moving said headstock to and from said tool carriage, a drive shaft carried by said frame for operating said headstock, a clutch associated with said drive shaft, a cam carried by said headstock, means actuated by said cam adapted for throwing out said clutch. and a brake mechanism brought into action by an outward movement of said clutch adapted to retard the movement of said drive shaft.
4.
