To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HJALMAR C. Lmnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anaconda, in the county of Deerlodge and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. I
This invention relates to certain improvements in screens and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the possibility of clogging is substantially entirely eliminated.
The invention also has for an object to provide a device of this general character which also serves as a means for grating the material and for which reason it is particularly desirable for use in connection with grain, vegetables, coal, ores, or any material of a granular type.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved screen whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
in order that my invention may be the better understood,'I will -now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a View in top plan illustrating a screen constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

its disclosed in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, F denotes a frame of predetermined constructlon and configuration and between which are supported the screening elements S arranged in stepped relation as particularly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. 1 Each of the screening elements S as heren embodied comprises a head plate 1 which is imperforate and which is disposed transversely of the frame F and immovably supported thereby in any ordinary or preferred manner.
Extending from the forward marginal portion of the plate 1 are the arms 2 of predetermined dimensions and having their opposite edges converging toward their outer or free ends. it is preferred that the arms 2 be removably engaged, as at 3, with the head plate 1 so that the same can be readily replaced when the requirements of practice may so require. By having the longitudinal edges of the arms 2 converging toward their free ends it will be at once perceived that open-ended slots are provided between the arms which gradually increase in width from their inner ends and toward the outer or free extremities thereof. It is also to be noted that the portions of the tive illustrating an additional embodiment arms 2 in advance of the head plate 1 are flee one of the other so that the spaces or slots therebetween are free and unobstructed throughout their lengths.
When in assembled relation the outer or' free extremities of an upper screening element S overlie a plate F slidably engaged with the head plate 1 of the screening element immediately adjacent thereto and in practice T find it of especial import to have each of the arms 2 provided with the longitudinally disposed depending web 4 which underlies contacts directly with said plate F and which also serves to materially strengthen the arms 2. In practiceit is pre I ferred that said webs or flanges 1 be positioned at substantially the transverse centers of the arms so that said webs or flanges 4 will offer no obstruction to the material falling through the slots formed between adjacent arms 2.
It is also my purpose to have the webs or flanges 4 of a width in excess of the major.
diameter of' the material to be separated so that it is assured the screening element S will not be clogged by having particles of material contact with a head plate 1 upon which a screening element S may be discharging.
It is thought to be self-evident that by having the slots or spaces between adjacent arms 2 gradually increased in width the passage or dropping of material therebetween is readily controlled, and it will be .perceived that by adjusting a plate P longitudinally of the lower or free extremities of substantially in the form of an inverted V.
In order to impart the requisite movement to the plate P, I provide one end portion and preferablythe upper end of the frame F with the transversely disposed rock shaft 5 with which issuitably connected an operating member 6 herein disclosed as a hand lever of a conventional type. The shaft 5 is also provided with the depending rock arms 7, one of said rock arms, as herein disclosed, comprising a'continuation of the operating lever 6. The lower or free extremities of the rock arm 7 are connected by the rod 8 with which are connected the links 9 preferably arranged in pairs and a pair of said links 9 is operatively engaged with a depending flange 10 arranged along the upper longitudinal margin of a plate I.
As is particularly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, it will be preceived that upon imparting rocking movement to the shaft 5 all of the plates P will be caused to move in unison and in the same general. direction.
In Fig. 5 I disclose an embodiment of my invention wherein the screening elements S are bodily movable one relative to the other in order to control the maximum sizes of the particles of material to drop therethrough, and as particularly illustrated in said figure, each of the screening elements S has one end portion slidably supported, as indicated at 11, with their opposite end portions in overlying relation.
12 denotes a rock shaft adapted to be operated in any conventional manner as through the medium of the hand lever 14. Depending from the shaft 12 is the rock arm 15 operatively engaged, as at 16, with the rod 17 which extends longitudinally of the screen and below the element S.
Coacting with each of the screening elements S is a lever 18 pivotally supported intermediate its length as at 19 and having its lower end portion operatively connected as at 20 with the rod 17, and it is to be noted that the levers 18 are of differing lengths so that the lowermost elements S will travel a distance less than those thereabove.
In the embodiment of my invention as disclosed in Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive, the side boards of the frame F have interposed therebetween adjacent opposite extremities the stationary plates or tables 21, and at a point substantially -midway of. the side boards is interposed the stationary screening element S S denotes a plurality of adjustable screening elements arranged above and below the stationary element S and the uppermost element S is provided with a plate P underlying the upper table 21 while the lowermost element S discharges upon the adjustably mounted plate I overlying the lower table 21. The elements S and the plate P are provided with the depending irons or flanges 22 having their opposite ends provided with blocks 23 mounted in the slots 24 produced in the side boards of the frame F and disposed longitudinally thereof whereby it will be at once self-evident that the elements S may be readily moved relative to the tables 21 and the stationary screening element S Disposed transversely of the frame F adjacent the upper end thereof is the rock shaft 25 provided adjacent each of the side boards of the frame F with the oppositely directed arms 26. The elements S above the element S are operatively engaged through the medium of the rods 27 with the upstanding arm 26, while the elements S below the element S are operatively engaged through the medium of the arms 28 with the downwardly directed arms 26. By this it will be perceived that upon the shaft 25 being rocked the upper and lower series of elements S will be caused to move in unison but in opposite directions for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident.
One pair of arms 26 has engaged therewith the member 29 provided with an areaate slot 30 through which is directed the clamping member 31 carried by the frame F, whereby effective means are provided for maintaining the screening elements S in their different adjustments.
As disclosed in these figures, each of the screening elements S or S is formed of a single sheet of metal and is provided with the forwardly directed arms 32 as has been set forth relative to the previous forms of my invention, and said arms are corrugated longitudinally as particularly illustrated in Fig. 8 for the same purpose as has been set forth relative to Fig. 6. It will also be understood that the corrugations are continued across the upper or connected portions of the screening elements S and S From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a screen constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A screen including a frame, screening elements arranged in stepped relation and supported by the frame, said elements discharging one upon the other, imperforate plates overlying the receiving ends of the lower elements, a rock shaft supported by the frame and provided with depending arms, a rod connecting said arms, and rods operatively engaged with the first named rod and with each of the plates whereby said plates are caused to move in unison and in the same general direction upon rotation of the rock shaft.
2. A screen including a frame, screening in the same general direction upon rotation of the rock shaft, and a lever for imparting movement to the rock shaft, said lever being in continuation of one of the depending arms.
3. A screen comprising a plurality of screening elements arranged in stepped relation and discharging one upon the other, plates slidably engaged with the receiving end portions of certain of the elements and underlying the discharge end portions of adjacent elements, and means common to all of the plates for moving the same in unison and in the same general direction.
l. A screening element comprising a head plate, a plurality of arms removably engaged with the head plate and extending therebeyond, the opposed edges of adjacent arms diverging, saidarms being free one of the other throughout their lengths in advance of the head plate, and a longitudinally disposed web depending from each of the arms at substantially its transverse center, an end portion of said web underlying the head plate.
