DISPENSING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN A. Bowsnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for dispensin liquid and the like, and is particularly L esigned and adaptedrfor discharging oil or asolene, the structure being so. made that 51c operating apparatus is accessible when the hood of the casing is raised vertically and is weather-proof for protecting the apparatus when the hood is closed.
Among the objects of the present invention are to provide a new and improved apparatus of this kind in which the casing is horizontally divisible and vertically movable; to provide means for supporting the discharge hose at an elevation above the ordinary height of a receptacle for receiving the oil; and to provide means for automatically draining the hose.
For the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the, construction, combination and arrangement of the several-parts generally shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the specification, but more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The present invention relates to apparatus for dispensing liquid from a tank located at a distance, for example, beneath the ground, and the dispensing apparatus Specification of Letters Patent.

is intended to be used without any other inclosure than the casin itself which is adapted to be locked in a cfised position, as illustrated in Fig. 1, when not in use and is provided with a horizontally divisible casin the uppenportion of which may be raised as shown 1n Fig. 2, to render accessible the dispensing parts, including the discharge hose itself, which, when not in use, is coiled within the apparatus and is entirely in closed by the hood or upper portion of the casing. Means is also provided for illuminatingjthe apparatus and for providing a signal lamp which moves with the movable portion of the casing, the whole comprising a distinctive design which is easily recognized and distinguished by its construction and design.
Referring more particularly to the present invention, the apparatus as a whole is inclosed in a horizontally divisible casing consisting of a lower casing 10 and a movable upper casing or hood 11. In the preferred construction, the hood is formed with a lower portion of substantially the same diameter as the lower portion 10 of the easing and with an upper extending portion 12 of reduced size. The lower casing 10 is preferably secured to a base 13 which in turn is supported upon the ground or upon any other suitable support and to a top piece 14 above which are certain parts of the apparatus. The hood 11 is designed either to meetthe lower casing 10 or the top piece 14 so that a weather-proof inclosure is made for the entire apparatus when the hood is down, and in thetop piece 14: is a lock 15 compris ng an aperture 16 (see Fig. 7) into i which a locking projection 17 (see Fig. 5) extends to .be engaged by the look. This is to prevent unauthorized persons from having access and to lock the casing closed 'when it is desired.
lVithin the lower portion of the-casing, 1s a. pump cylinder 18 having connnunicatlon through avalve 1.9 with a supply pipe 20.
This valve 19 admits liquid by the 4 suction of the cylinder 18 and is positively closed by means of a rod 21 when a pump rack 22 and the other dispensing apparatus is in predetermined position. Connected with the cylinder 18 is a filter-23 from which a discharge pipe 24 extends upwardly within the hood 11.
An operating shaft has suitable drivi'ng connection with the pump rack 22 to reciprocate it, and a suitable indicator 26, compensator 27, and'stops 28 are provided for effecting the o eration and stopping of the pump. P i vota 1y connected to the operating shaft IS a handled crank 29 which folds inwardly to the position shown more clearly in Fig. 7, when the hood is closed and is rotatable to the position shown by dotted outline in this figure for operating.
Attached to the crank 29 is a spring-pressed ,dog 30 which engages a shoulder 31 for holding the crank in operating position.
The dog 30 is preferably in the form of a bell crank so that it may be engaged by the finger for compressing its spring and releasing it from engagement with the shoulder 31 when it is desired to fold the handle inwardly.
Attached to the top of the discharge pipe 21 is a discharge head 32 in which is a dis charge valve 33, and connected with the discharge head by means of a pipe 34 is a'dis charge hose preferably flexible and of such a length that it will extend a distance from the apparatus when the hood 11 is raised; At the discharge end the hose is provided with a discharge nozzle 36 for insertion within tanks, receptacles and the like. Connected with the discharge head 32 is a hose draining device 37 which admits air to the discharge head on the discharge side of the valve 33, thereby insuring that all the liquid will: drain from the hose so long as the dischargeend is not raised above the discharge head 32, or the hose is not looped, and kecpingthe hose free from liquid when the pump is not in operation. In the -ordinary operation of the pump, the valve 38 raises when liquid is discharged, and means is also provided for positively closing the valve 33 when desired, the means comprising a valve stem 38 attached to a pivoted lever 39 which in turn is connected to a rod 40 extending to a pivoted block 11 (see Figs. 3 and 5) controlled by "a. lever 711011 the lever raises the rod i0, it carries with it the stem 38 which permits the valve to be freely opened by the discharging liquid and to be positively closed when the rod is l()''' cred, a spring 40 being provided at the end of the rod to insure uniform pressure on the valve Within the reduced portion 12 of the hood 11 and adjacent the top thereof. is a plate 4'3 supported by means of a rod H extending from the discharge head 32. The hood is free'to move with respect to the upper plate but the lower plate 4.5 is seei-ir'ed to the hood, and the upper'plate being suitably through the lower plate 45 and has a connection {l9 throughthe lower portion of the casing and the base of the apparatus to a suitable source of electrical supply. Also per plate 43 is a conduit 48 which passes extending through the upper plate 43 and depending there rom is a conduit 50 with an electric lamp 51 at the lower end thereof for illuminating the operating mechanism below the hood when it is raised, an openingheing provided in the lower plate 45 through which the lamp passes when the hood L1 and the plate 45 are raised. A switch 45" is provided which is operated by the hood 11- when it is raised and lowered, the switch controls the circuit of the lamp 51, whereh the lamp is lighted when the hood is raised and extinguis ed when the hood is lowered and closed. 1 Supported-by thev reduced "portion 12 of the hood 11, at its upper end, is a casing 52 upon which is supported an electric lamp 525 with a globe 54 inclosingit, the casing 52 beingprovided with a suitable groove for holding the globe in position. Within the casing and extending from theconduit l8, are insulated electrical conductors 56 and 57 the former of which extends into the conduit 50 for lighting the lamp 51, and the latter of which is coiled within the casing and connected to the lamp This coil isfor the purpose of forming a con nection with the lamp such that the elec- --t:.rical circuit is not "disturbed by the raising or loweringflof the hood. For this purpose, side straps (31 are provided, each connected to the coil. 51 at a. number of points and having loops (32 which are taken up when the coil is extended. This is to keep the coil 57 in place and to prevent it from uncoiling. Thus a. visible signal is given at handled crank 29 to its operating position whereupon the operating shaft 25 may be rotated to reciprocate the pump rack 22 and operate the pump for any predetermined quantity. During the operation of the pump, the valve 1.9 is positively closed upon the down stroke of the pump piston.
With this construction, the dischargeh'ose is alwaysdrained so that the fluid pumped is not held in the hose causing it to deteriorate.
In closing the apparatus, the hose 35 is coiled in any suitable manner Within the easing, the crank 29 is released from its operating position and rotated inwardly, and the hood -1S moved vertically downward, 1nclosin the apparatus and opening the switch 45 to cut off the lamp 51.
\Vhile I have thus described the preferred construction, combination and arrangement of parts which constitute the present invention, it is obvious. that others skilled in the arts to which this annertains, may make various changes without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
hat I claim is:
1. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of liquid discharging means comprising a foldable operating crank, and a movable casing for entirely inclosing said means, the crank of which is unfoldable to clear the casing when it is moved to uncover the dischargin means.
2. In liqui dispensing apparatus, the combination with an inclosing easing a part of which is movable, of liquid discharge means entirely inclosed by thecasing when the movable part is closed, the said means comprising a pivoted crank for operating it which is rotatable from a position within the casing to a position clear of the movable part when it is opened.
3. In a liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with pumping means, of a casing secured to and normally inclosing the said apparatus, having a. vertically movable portion of such casing to uncover certain partsof the apparatus for operation, a dis charge pipe extending upwardly above that part of the pumping means uncovered in operation. and a flexible discharge hose secured to the upper end of said discharge pipe.

5. Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising liquld pumping means, a filter connected thereto and an upwardly extending discharge pipe connected to the filter, in combination with a casing for inclosing said apparatus comprising a movable portion with an enlarged portion to directly incase the pumping means when the movable portion is closed, and a portion of reduced size int-o which the upper end of the discharge pipe extends, thepipe being inclosed by the said reduced portion when the movable por tion of the casing is raised or lowered.
6. Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising liquid pumping means. a filter connected thereto and an upwardly extending discharge pipe connected to the filter, in combination with a casing for inclosing said apparatus comprising a movable portion with an enlarged. portion to directly incase the pumping means when the movable portion is closed, a portion of reduced size into which the upper end of the discharge pipe extends. the pipe being incloscd by thesaid reduced portion when the movable portion of the casing is raised or lowered, and a flexible discharge hose connected to the upper end of the discharge pipe and extending downwardly through the reduced portion of the casing and without the enlarged portion thereot when the movable portion of the casing is raised. i
7. In a. liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with manually operable pumping means, of a casing secured to and normally inclosing the pumping means having a vertically movable portion to uncover parts of said means for manual operation, and a fixed discharge pipe which extends upwardly a predetermined distance above the pumping means.
8. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with liquid dispensing means including an upwardly extending pipe comprising a support. a hood with a reduced port-ion inclosing the pipe, a flared portion to cover the discharge means. means to resiliently support the hood for vertical move ment, and aalischarge hose connected with the upper end of the pipe extending from beneath the hood to discharge liquid from an elevation.
9. Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising liquid piunping means, an upwardly extending discharge pipe, a valve in the dis charge pipe a discharge hose connected to upper end of the discharge pipe, and an air inlet valve at the upper end of the discharge pipe to cause only the hose to drain clear of liquid at all times.

In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with liquid discharge means embodying a discharge pipe extending above the height of-v'a receptacle into which it is to discharge, adischarge hose connected to the upper endofthe pipe, and a vertically movable hood with a portion to inclose the pipe and the hose and with a flared portion at the bottom in which the free end of the hose is inclosed when the hood is i 11 its lowermost position.

17. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with pumping means embodying a discharge pipe extending above the ordinary height of a receiving receptacle, a
discharge hose connected to the upper end of the discharge pipe, an air inlet valve for draining the discharge hose, a discharge valve at the end of the discharge pipe, and means connected to the latter valve and operable from adjacent the pumping means to positively close the valve.
18. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with pumping mechanism comprising a cylinder, a discharge pipe extending above the cylinder, an inlet connection for the cylinder, a positively closing valve in the inlet connection, a discharge valve at the upper end of the discharge pipe, and means for positively operating the valve at the upper end of the discharge. pipe.

In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with pumping mechanism embodying a discharge pipe extending a distance above the pumping mechanism, another pipe connected to the discharge pipe at its top, a self-closing valve for the dis. charge pipe adjacent the top thereof to pre vent. back flow of liquid in the pipe, and an air inlet valve at the top of the said other pipe to drain it.
20. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with a horizontal separablecasing,'the upper portion of which is movable, of pumping mechanism comprising a rotatable operating member, and a crank attached to said operating member foldable from a position where it is clear from the casing so th'atthe member may be freely rotated to a position where it is inclosedby the upper portion of the casing When the casing, is closed.

Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising liquid pumping means, a liquid discharge pipe extending upwardly beyond said means, a casing secured to and inclosing said apparatus having a portion which is vertically slidable to expose said pumping means for manual actuation, and a discharge hose connected to the upper end of said discharge pipe.

Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising liquid pumping means and an upwardly exteiuing discharge pipe, in combination with a casing for inclosing said apparatus comprising a vertically slidable portion to directly inclose the apparatus when in one position and to expose the pumping means for manual operation in another position.

a flexible discharge hose secured to the upper end of the discharge pipe and insertible in a receptacle to be filled.
