Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,807, dated March 19, 1872.
Specification describing a certain Improvement 1n -Itadiating-Domes for Hot-Air Furnaces, invented by BARTHoLoMEw GOMMEN- cinema, of the city of Rochester, in the connty of Monroe and State of New York,
.Nature of the Invention.

General Description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the dome; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section in line :r Fig. l; Fig. 3, a perspective View of a portion ofthe ring Fig. 4, a view of one of the draught-inlets; Fig. 5, section of the baseof the dome.
A represents the dome, which may be made to surmount the fire-pot and base of any ordinary hot-air furnace, B B are the combustionpipes leading from the rechamber to the dome; and C is the closed central cone or chamber, which holds a portion of the heat and products of combustion, and simply serves as a radiator, the same being in common use. The dome consists simply of an annular hollow chamber, being covered at the `top and bottom by the plates D D. The hollow space of this dome is divided into two compartments by a vertical annular partition or divisionplate, E, which is in the form of a ring, open at bot-h ends, and extends from top to bottom, as shown. This partition-ring is loose, so that it may be turned around to any position, and it is operated by a socket-stem, a, which projects through the dome, or by any other desired means. The inlet-openings b b from the combustion-pipes open centrally against the bottom of the partition-rin g, so as to discharge equally into either of the compartments separated by the ring. The base D, in which these inlets are located, is made convex upon the inner side, as shown at c c, the object being to allow-the ashes to slide off on either side, away rfrom the bottom of the partition-rin g, and thus prevent clogging. A hat space, however, is left under the edge of the ring, so that it will keep in place and work easily. The plate, directly under the edge of the ring, is also perforated at intervals by small holes d d, Fig. 5, to allow the escape of such ashes as do gather under the ring| from long standing- These several features of the convex plate and the perforations form one feature of my invention.
The bottom of the partition-ring is formed at its lower edge, outside and inside, with halfcircular covers or capsfj', of size and shape to correspond with the half-circular inlet-openings b b of the combustion-pipes, which they aremade to cover. They also stand in convex or arching form, tot the arch of the base-plate D. These covers, outside and inside, are arranged to alternate or break joints, being l so located that when one set covers the openings on one side the other set uncovers the openings on the other side, and vice versa. Thus the openings on one side or the other are always open when the other set is closed. The object of this is to give either a direct -or an indirect draught, as may be desired.
When an indirect draught is to be produced, the holes in the outer'compartrnent are covered, as shown in the drawing;l and in that case the draught which enters the inner compartrnent passes through the part g in the partition-ring into the outer one, and finally escapes into the smoke-pipe h.
By the use of this partition-rin g damper the furnace is self -cleaning at all times, as the ashes that deposit are swept off by the turning action. Thus the furnace is kept from iilling up, and it cannot leak gas or smoke.
I am aware that flat-ring dampers have been employed to cover the openings in the same kind of drum, but these are objectionable, inasmuch as they lie ila-t and soon become obstructed by ashes. Separate rings have also to be used for the several compartments. Such an arrangement is also complicated and eX- pensivew I make the central partition itself serve as the damper to cover and uncover the holes. The whole being in one piece instead of three, it is much simpler and cheaper, therefore. Being upright, it cannot clog, especially when the base D is made of the convex form shown, and the covers f f are made separated and detached.
My improvement greatly simplifies the construction of the furnace. I
