Description
DANIEL M. FAY, OF- MONMOUTH, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO A. S. MCGREW, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GANG-PLQWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,802, dated March 19, 1872.
t srncrrronrrou. v I, DANIEL M. FAY, of Monmouth, county of Warren and State of Illinois, have invented I certain Improvements in Gan g-Plow s, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
The nature of my invention relates to improvements in that class of plows known as gang-plows, in which a series of plows arranged in a gang and carried ona frame provided with wheels, are so connected and provided with other devices that they may be operated by the driver from his seat on the frame; and the invention consists in the general arrangement and combination of the parts to produce a simple, practical, substantial, and cheap machine, all as hereinafter fully described.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
General Description.
broad vertically, as shown in the drawing, and
working in vertical slots in the lower ends of the pendants D D D, inwhich they are secured by bolts e e e, passing through series of holes e e e in each pendant. H H H are the plowstandards, passing through and bolted to the beams near their central portions, as shown, andtheir lower ends twisted and shaped so as to fit neatly the left-hand forward side of the mold-boards h h h, which are attached to and carried on their lower ends. The upper ends of the standards H pass through slots I I I in their respective bars G. J J J are rolling cutters, attached to the beams E E E, and carried, one forward of each plow, in the usual manner. K is a Windlass, carried tran sversely in suitable bearings on top of the bars 0 C O, and in rear of the axle. L L L are grooved facepulleys on the Windlass K, with chains or cords l l l attached at one end thereto, and extending and connected at their other ends to the rear ends of the beams E E E, the left-hand chain Zpassing over a pulley, l. M is a hand-lever, extending upwardfrom the windlass K to within reach of the driver, from his seat N. P is a rack-bar, extending upward from the axle A. R is the draft-pole, with braces r r to the axle A. Y
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the leverM is thrown up to the position shown by full lines at Fig.2, the chains Z l l will be slackened by unwinding from pulleys L L L, and the plow-beams E E E dropped into. working position. The depth of penetration of the soil may be governed by raising or lowering the forward ends of the plow-beams by means of bolts e e e and holes e e e. The wabbling or gyratory movement of the plows, arising mainly from the absence of any landsides, is prevented by the broad beanrplates G, fitting neatly in the slotted pendants D, and by the standards H passing up through the slots I I I in the bars 0 O 0, thus giving the advantage of easevof draft arising from absence of land-sides,and preserving the steadiness of operation arising from the addition of land-sides. By throwing the hand-lever M forward it wi1l be plainly seen that the plowbeams E E E will be elevated from the ground for convenience in turning, &c. The arrangement of the pendants D D D forward and in rear of the axle is such as to balance the frame, and prevent neck draft on the draft animals whenin operation.
Claim.
The beams E E E having broad plates G, in-combination with pendants D D D, bars. O, and standards H having mold-boards h, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
' DANIEL M. FAY.
Witnesses: I
