2 SHEETSSHEET 2- UNITED STATES PATENT caries.
EARL M. MoCURRY, OFCOLUMBIANA, OHIO.
TIR -eons.
To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that I, Emu. M. McCumt'vi, a citizen ofthe United States. residing at Columbiana, in the county of Colnmbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire (ores: and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the. art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tire'cores.
The invention has for its object to provide a core, which may be readily removed from a tire which has been built thereon. A further object is to provide for forming the core in readily separable sections which are adapted to be ettectively retained in assembled relation and whereby they may be readily disassembledas intimated.
A still further object is. to provide for carrying out the aforesaid ends 1n :1. simple, inexpensive and expeditious manner, and with facility.
- The invention consists therefore of certain instrumentalities and features of construction substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by. the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings is illus trated the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made as to the detailed construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the scope of the claims, and in which draw- 49 igure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is 1 plan view thereof. Fig. '3 1s a. transverse section taken 46 through a portion of the core.
Fig. 4 is'also a-view in' side elevatlon iheifi f', with one' of the core-sections, or shown disassembled and relatively disposed witmrespect to the vacancy caused 50 by such removal? N 4 Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are etailed .fragmental 'views of certain elements e core, which will be readily undelrstoodirom ejollowing description. in carrying out my build thccore, generally designated as 1,

of a plurality of sections, or segments 2, ll. 4 and the Whole forming a true circle, the section or segment 2. being the shortest or of the least are. -and \vith its-ends-pai allel. accordingly abutting or forming joints with the adjoining sections or segments in non-radial lilies as at 6. the other sections or segments having their abutting or-jointforming endson radial lines, as at 7. This arrangement. it will be seen, provides for the ready withdrawal inwardly of section l, whereupon the other sections or segments may be readily disjointed 0r displaced as called forin removing the core from the tire at the end of the tire-forming operation. The core-sections or segments are enla rged at their peripheral or circumferential portions along oval or oblong lines, as at 8, for the requisite formation of the tire in the molding operation. These core-sections or segn'ients are each formed of eomplemental areuate elements, suitably riveted together, as shown. and provided with arcuate laterally taeing grooves practically in continuation of each other to constitute a continuous ll of the areuate elements of said segments or sections are recessed from staggered longitudinal edges. as at 12,13 to receive correspondingly raised surfaces as 14. 15 thereof. which provide for the relatively halvin said rings or annuli together as indicated in Fig. 3. The meeting surfaces of the ringforming arcuate sections or segments 2, etc., are provided with interfitting or registering sockets and tenons 16. 17 respectively-for aiding the alinement-retflajon of the same, as is apparent. The ring or annulus 10, it will he observed, provides, in conjunction with the resultant angled, or one and onehalf inch, joint between the arcuate. sections or segments 2, etc., for drawing or clamping said parts tightly in position and against any possible displacement or working loose in the use of the core; also it will be noted that the use of screws or other similar fasteniugs, is disposed of in the assembling or adjusting the parts. as in applying the same.
It will he understood that in the buildin or constructing the tire, the unvulcanize pieces or strips of textile material, as canyas and the like. are initially applied to the wulcanized strips, is transferred to the vulcanizer for effecting the tire finishing operation, the-core then bein removed in the manner as ,above indlcate for dlsassemblin the respective core sections or segments, a1 being readily understood, as is beheved appreciable from the aforesaid disclosure.
I claim:
1. Aicollapsible core for pneumatic tires, including aplurality of sections cut from a continuousannular member, provided with a relatively ;'Iarge, annuIar chamber, a plurality of sectionsi otit from a continuous annular member, theQlength of the said last mentioned sections being at variance with the length of the first mentioned sections and disposed within the said relatively large chamber in the firstmentioned sections, means for securing each of the sections of the second mentioned plurality of sections to each of the first mentioned plurality of sections to produce the sections of the tire core, a tongue and slot formation in the abutting. ends of the core sections, one section of each of the two plurality of sections being cut on parallel lines, the other cuts of vsaid sections being on radial lines, a fillingin piece at the cuts of the sections to compensate for the thickness of the cuts, the sections of one of the annular members formin in connection with the sections of the ot ier annular members an annular groove, and a continuous annular ring to enter said groove to maintain the core sections in proper and-rigid relative position,
2. A collapsible core for pneumatic tires, includin a pluralit' of sections, each section inc uding members cut from continuous annular members, the members of each section being of different lengths in such manner that one member of one section will ovcrla a member of a next adjacent section, t e said two members of each section being of such relative dimensions as to provide a continuous annular groove between the members of eachsection when the members are in an assembled position, and a continuous annular ring to enter the said continuous groove for maintainin r the said sections in proper relative assem ledposition.
3. A collapsible core for pneumatic tires, including a lurality of sections, eaclr section comprising two members, each of which 'inembers is cut from a continuous annular member, the members of each section being of difi'crvnt lengths, means 'for securing the members of each section together in such manner that one member of the section will overlap a member of an adjacent section when the sections of the core are in an assembled position, the two members of each section forming between each other a continuous annular groove when the core sections are in assembled position, and a con tinuous annular rin' groove to maintain t e said core sections in proper relative position,
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signaturn, in the presence of two witnesses.
