To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Sins D. LEVIN, a citizen of the United States. residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mining-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to machines adapted to cut a kerf in the coal preparatory to blasting or otherwise breaking the coal from the solid. One object of the invention is the provision of a machine comprising a wheel and be laterally braced by a. traclt extendlng longitudinally toward a vertical-coal face and a cutter mechanism movably sup-,
ported on the base frame and adapted, while unloaded -from a transporting truck prior to the cutting-operation and again loaded upon the truck after such operation. Other objects of the invention relate to the provision of a machine of the character referred to having its cutting nie'chanisin mountedin a novel way n relation to the base frame and provided with means whereby it can i be adjusted. operated and controlled in a novel manner. Theforegoing objects, and others more or less incidental thereto, will be understood from thet'ollowing description and claims.
I have shown in the accompanying drawings a machine embodying my invention, but I do not desire to be limited to the construction shown as there are many changes which may obviously be made.

The machine illustrated in the drawings comprises a wheeled base frame or truck A, a cutting mechanism B of the endless chain type and an intermediate frame C. The cutting mechanism is supported on the frame C so as to swing laterally while cutting and the :trame C is itselr vertically, and
preferably angularly, adjustably supported on the truclnso that keri s can be cut at rious heights and inclinations.
Power means are provided for rotating the wheels of the truck and preferably the power means consists oi a train of power transmitting devices adapted to be connect- -ed with a driving motor. In the construction shown these devices are connected. with the motor which is carried by and which drives the cutting mechanism, a part of the train of devices being carried by the cutr ting mechanism and a part directly by the truck. The two sets can be connected when the cutting mechanism and the motor are properly adjusted with respect to the truck. These parts will be againreiferred.t heloiv and-described in detail.

Those of the above mentioned power transmitting devices for rotating the truck Wheels which are mounted. on the truck itsell will now be described, it being, of course, understood that as concerns the details of these devices there can be variation. To one of the axles, as for instance 4:, there is secured a driving gear 5. Adjacent the gear 5 and rotatably mounted on the axle is a bracket 8, which has two parallel arms 8- and 8*. At the ends of the arms are provided hearings in which is rotatably mounted the jack shaft 9. The position of the sprocket wheel 11 maybe changed Without affecting the operation of this power transmitting gearing. This may be done by a rotation f the hand wheel is which acts through the shaft 13, the worm l2 and the Worm segment 11 to turn the bracket 8 about the axle. The Worm and Wheel gearing makes the device self-locking; as any force applied to the gearing or the sprocket wheel will not move the worm to permit a change of position of. the bracket 8.
The devices for supporting and adjusting the cutting mechanism ceinprise, in addition to the intermediate frame C, vertical studs or uprights which are mounted on the truckframe and arranged to define a polynear -tie gon in horizontal ,plan. The studs are fix.- edly held in their upright positions. As shown, there are three studs 15, 15, 15 arranged to define an equilateral triangle. Preferably one or these is mounted in the center of the machine at the front end, the others being symmetrically located near the rear end. Each of the studs is threaded and is provided with two nuts 16 and 17, which have beveled surfaces and which are provided with radial apertures for the insertion of a. bar or spanner Wrench for turning.
The intermediate frame C as here shown comprises a circular ring 18 preferably rectangular in cross section. as shown in Fig. 3. Equally spaced about this ring are three de pending brackets I 1'9 which comprise two parallel side bars .20, 20 and a horizontal yoke 21 at the bottom of the said bars and having an aperture adapted to receive one of the studs 15.
0n each stud below the yoke 21 is located a nut 17. On each stud above the. yoke is located a nut 16. The apertures in the yoke 21 are sufficiently large to permit a certain amount of lateral movement of the yokes relative to the studs. It will be seen that by a proper adjustment or the nuts 17 the brackets 19 with the ring 18 may be raised or lowered or adjusted to any desired angle relative to the truck. The'nuts 16 serve as lock nuts to hold the brackets in their adjusted positions and to frictionally lock the nuts 17 by pressure transmitted through the yoke 21.
When the. parts are assembled as described the rigid frame C serves to tie the vertical supporting studs 15 together so that they mutually brace each other. This action of the frame C is especially advantageous when 5 it is adjusted Well toward the top of the studs as it insures a strong, rigid frame structure. As concerns the cutting mechanism B it is essential that it be movably 1 ounted relatively to the base frame so tint it can cut 119 a horizontally extending kerf across the front of the truck. in the construction illustrated the cutting mechanism is movable horizontally with respect to the intermediate or supporting frame C and com- 115 prises a rotatable table or frame22 upon which the various operative parts are supported. This frame rests directly on the top of the ring 18 and is adapted to rotate relative thereto. A series of rollers 23 arerotatably mounted on the under" side of the frame 22 and are adapted to engage the inner surface of'the ring to guide the frame 22 in its rotation. A series of brackets or clips 24 are provided which are attached to the under side. of the frame 22 and engage the under side of the ring 18 to prevent the frame from moving upward relative to the ring. 1
As will be fully explained below, the cut- 18'') near/" ie ting mechanism can be used either when moving relatively to the truck or when it is locked thereto and the Whole machine is moved bodily. In order that the cutting mechanism may be locked in various angular positions to the intermediate frame, the outer edge of the frame 22 is provided with a series of notches 25. As concerns the construction and arrangement of the electric motive mechanism there can be modification, but as shown, there is an electric motor 31 carried by the truck and bodily movable therewith. Preferably it is suspended from the table 22. 3l -is a controller for the motor and is preferably mounted on the motor frame. Suitz'dde electrical connections are provided for the controller and motor. As shown. the connections comprise a cable 7 extending from the cable reel 6 to the controller 31. and a cable 7 extending from the controller to the motor, said cables haw ing conductors suitably connected at their" respective ends to the terminals of the cable reel, controller and motor to form an. operative electrical connection between the conductors of cable 7 and the motor 31. I have not. shown these electrical connections in detail because any of the well known arrangements of conductors, fuses, switches, etc, which is suitable for the purpose indicated, can be used. The motor is provided with the shaft 32 carrying the driving pinion 33. The pinion 33 meshes with the gear 35*. which is rotatably mounted on the shaft 353. shown in Fig. 5 the gear 3% is connected to a quill 'or sleeve as. to the outer end of which is connected a sprocket wheel 37. The gear 3%, With'the sleeve 36 and the .-.-.'r0-.l0'- wheel 37, is rotatable on the shaft in and may beseeuredto it by means of the pins 38 which may be moved readily in ward or outward in the slots 39 to engage or disengage the notches 40 in the flange 41 which isconncctcd to the shaft 35.-

For driving the chain it; there is provided a sprocket wheel 4-5 mounted at the upperend of a vertical shaft 42 which is mounted in a suitable bearing on the frame 22*. This shaft is located directly above the shaft 35, but both shafts are preferably located at one-side of the center of the frame 22. The shaft 42 is provided at its lower end with a bevel gear l3 which meshes with a bevel pinion 44 on the shaft As concerns the power actuated mechanism for moving the cutting mechanism relatively to the base or truck frame and for moving the entire machine bodily, there can be variation. but I prefer the mechanism shown,' which comprises a suitable cable adapted to be wound upon a drum which. is driven by the aforesaid motor 31.

This clutch mechanism comprises the driving member 52 which is keyed to the shaft it and disks 53, which are secured alternately to thedriving member 52 and the drum member 50. By means of the hand wheel '54, which engages the upper threaded part ofthc shaft as, the disks may be forced to gcther to friclionally engage each other, power being thus transmitted through the driving member 52 to the drum 50.
A cable 55 is connected to the drum 50 and .isadapted to be wound upon it. The cable, passes from the drum 50 over a series of sheaves 6]., 60, 59, 58, 57 and 5(3. After passing over the last guide sheave the cable can have its end suitably secured at any desired point outside of the machine so as to move the machine bodily, when the cutting mechanism is locked against relative movement. Such an arrangement shown in Figs. l3, 14, 17 and 18. If it is desired to swing the cutting mechanism relative to the truck frame, the end of the cable may be secured to one of the cable holders (52 which are attached to the ring 18, preferably above the brackets 19, such an arrangement being exemplified in Figs. 10, 11, l2, l5 and 16. These figures, and also Figs. 13, ll. 17 and 13, will hereinafter be explained more fully. I there is mounted a pawl 69 which is adapted to engage the ratchet wheel 67. The spring 70 engages atone end with the pawl and at the other end with a pin 71 which extends between the brackets 68. This spring tends to hold the pawl 69 in operative engagement with the ratchet wheel 67. a
An eccentric 42 is mounted on the shaft l2 and carries a strap 42". The strap 42 is connected by means of 'a horizontal pivot 42 to a connecting rod 68 A yoke 68 is connected to the connecting rod by means of a vertical pivot 68 and to the arms 68 by means of a horizontal pivot 68. By means of this construction the arms 68 are rocked backward and forward about the shaft 65 as the eccentric is rotated, th pawl 69 being thus given a reciprocatory movement whereby it may engage the ratchet wheel 67 to intermittently rotate it. The horizontal pivots 42 and 68 permit the vertical movement of the rod 68 which is in cidental to the swinging of the arm 68. The vertical pivot 68 permits the rod 68 to move laterally with the eccentric stra 42 each side ct the ratchet wheel 6 and preferably outside of the brackets 68 are two arms 72, each rotatably mounted at one end on the shaft 65. The outer ends of these arms are connected by a pivotally mounted "yoke 73, which has a threaded aperture through which passes the thread ed adjusting'rod 74; Hand wheels 75 and 76 are provided at the upper and lower ends oi this rod. The rod passes loosely through a suitable aperture in the frame,

The operation of the machine is as fol lows: When it is desired to move the ma chine from place to place about a mine or elsewhere the table 22 is swung to the position shown in the drawings and the chain 79 is put in place on the sprockets 37 and a; 11. In order that but one length oflchain need be provided for various vertical adjustments of the machine, the mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 6 has been provided. As has been previously described, the sprocket wheel 11 may be swung'about the axle 4 by rotation of the hand wheel 14:. As it swings about the axle its distance from the sprocket wheel 37 is changed, and by a proper adjustment its position may be accommodated to any vertical position ot,

In many mines, however, conditions are encountered which make it preferable to cut the kerif at on near the top of the seam, or at some pointhetween the top and the bottom. This is especially the case in mines where there are present in the coal scam hands or layers of impurities which must not be mixed with the coal. These layers are, of course, at difl'erent heights in different mines, and oven vary markedly in height from place to place in the same mine. in fact, even in a given room the layer or hand oi dirt may be inclined so as to be much higher at one side than at the other. When such dirt bands are encountered, a machine embodying my invention can he used to cut them out; that is, the cutting mechanism is adjusted vertically, and angularly, it necessary, so that will follow the dirt hand and remove it, thus performing; the double function of getting rid of the dirt and forming' a kerf to permit shooting of the coal.
In order that the manner of utilizing my invention may he clearly understood, l have indicated in the diagrammatic Figs. to 18 of the drawings several oi the ways in which my machine can he used, and these ll will now briefly describe.
Referring first to Figs. 10 and 11, it will he observed that the machine is here shown as operating on a track which extends along" the center of a room to the face which is to be cut. From the mine entry the machine advances under its own power into the room and is brought to a position as close as convenientto the face of the coal. The cutting mechanism having been extended toward the right, as shown in Fig. 10, the cable is passed around the several sheaves and secured to one of the holders 62 as shown. In Fig. 12 the machine is shown working on a track parallel with the coal face-t0 be cut. ln starting the operation the feed cable is passed around several of the sheaves and connected to one of the holders 62. Then motion causing the cutter bar to swing from right to left, or counter-clockwise, from the position shown in dotted lines, to that shown in full lines. When this full line position is reached the feed is stopped and the cable is loosened, taken off from the holder 62'and extended along the face to a suitable jack in the manner indicated in Fig. 13. The cutting mechanism is then locked against swinging and the winding drum again start-- ed. The draft of the cable now serves todraw the entire machine along the track, the cutters meantime forming the kerf.
In Fig. 13 the operation is similar to that described in connection with Fig. 12, the former figure being designed to show the manner in which the machine can be used to start a kert adjacent a side Wall or rib. The dotted lines indicate the position oi the machine after the cutter has been swung under the coal and the cable carried along the face to a jack. The full lines indicate the position of the machine after the cutting operation has progressed some distance. It will be understood that when the machine is worked in the ways indicated-in Figs. 12 and 13, the cutter mechanism can be adjusted vertically and angularly in the manner previously described.
Referring to the operation as shown in Figs. 14 to 18, it will be observed t .at here again the machine is shown as operating on a track which extends along the center of a .room. This requirement can be met with different forms of frame structure but,
when the cutter frame is to be vertically adjusted through a relatively wide range, I prefer a structure of the character shown having a rigid base disposed relatively close to the ground and carrying upwardly extending supports forthe cutting mechanism.
In the construction shown and described the upright supports 15 are rigidly and fixedly mounted on the truck frame and the cutting apparatus is both vertically adjustable and laterally movable in relation to said supports; but my invention, in its broader aspects, is. not to be understood as limited to such a. relation of the parts, for it is obvious that provision for the lateral swinging movement of cutting apparatus vertically adjustably mounted on upright supports, can be made in other ways.
