Be it known that I, Aimar KRYSTYNIAK,

a citizen of the United States, resident of Greensburg, county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street- Car Lights, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in street car lights, as ordinarily disposed atthe front and rear of the car.

T he principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby such lights are automatically turned so as to direCt the light rays in advance of the car and indicate the direction in which the car is moving, particularly when the car is about to traverse a curved` course.

A further object is to provide such means in forms which may be readily applied to cars of existing construction as well as to be installed originally, and finally, to provide such means in forms which are inexpensive to construct, positive and reliable in their operation, and which require no attention on the part of the car operator.

llhese and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter' described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a conventional form of street car showing the application of the invention.

ln the drawings, the body of the car 10 is shown to be arranged with extending platforms 11 at the front and rear, and mounted upon trucks 12, in such manner that the latter may have a slight rotary motion independent of the car frame, as is necessary 1n passing over curves, switches, and the like.

Attached to the extending platform 11 1s a sleeve 1l, the same being secured' by the iiange 15, which is bolted directly to the platform and below which is an extension 1G, these parts acting as a bearing for the spindle 1S, provided with a. collar 19, resting upon the top of the sleeve and preventing it from slipping downward.

engaged in the bearing 20, formed in the bracket 21, affixed to the front wall 22 of the car.

The upper extending` end of the spindle 18 is bent forwardly at right angles, and formed into an eye 2-1, in which may be secured the lamp 25, the lamp being of any preferred type or description whatever, as may the manner of its attachment.

T he lower end 0f the spindle 18 is firmly engaged with a. rectangular block 28, slidably mounted between upright guides 29, supported by transverse bars 30 and 31, respectively at the top and bottom, and having engaged at their extremities the ends of coiled pull springs 32 and 33, the other ends of the springs being engaged by links 3l and 35, connecting through suitable eyes with angles 36 and 37, secured in a suitable manner to the extreme outer end of the truck frame 12, so that when the latter is caused to turn, by reason of the car passing over a curve or the like, as to pull the links B-l; and 35, transmitting the motion to the springs 82 and 33, which serve to cushion the abruptness of the movement, and cause the spindle 18 to be partially rotated, transmitting a direct turning elfect to the lamp 25 so that the same is caused to direct its rays directly in advance of the car as indicated by the turning movement of the truck frame.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that an efficient and practical device has been disclosed which will turn the lights at the front or rear of the car exactly in the direction indicated by the position of the truck, but sufficiently in advance of the movement of the car so that its path will be properly illuminated.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a street cail light carrying device, the combination with a lamp, a car platform and truck thereof, of means carried by said platform for supporting said lamp, a block rigidly engaged at the lower end of said support means, a pair of plates disposed transversely of said platform through which said support means passes, guides for said support means carried by said plates, connections between said plates and said trucks whereby they are operated in unison, and a cushioning means interposed in said connections.
