To all whom may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. LINDSAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bartlesville, in the county of Washington and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Well- Packings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to devices for establishing a fluid tight contact between numerous kinds of well casings and the wall of the well, the device being designed primarily for use in gas and oil wells, although it could well be employed in Artesian wells and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple yet a highly eificient packing of the class specified which is automatically expanded inthe well by continuing to drive the casing downwardly after the lower end thereof abuts the bottom of the well or is otherwise held against further downward movement.
With the foregoing general obj ectin view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the Vaccompanying drawing which constitutes a part of this application and in which:

In the drawing above briefly, described the numerals 1 and 2 designate respectively upper and lower pipe sections, both of which may, if desired, be formed of a number of short lengths of pipe connected by threaded collars 3 such as shown at the upper end of Figs. 1 and 2. In the embodiment illusstrated, however, the section 2 is formed of one piece of piping and may be of any preferred length. v
A metallic sleeve 4 is threaded into the upper end of the pipe section 2 and extends tegral collar 5 abutting the upper end of the pipe section 2 and having above this collar an auxiliary collar 6 of less thickness. rIhe lower end of the pipe sectionl 1 slides through the sleeve 4 and is iiared outwardly at 7 to prevent withdrawal therefrom and to maintain a pressure seated packing ring 8 in proper position for contact with the lower end of the sleeve.
A tapered packing sleeve 9 of rubber or any other suitable iiexible material surrounds the'projecting upper end of the sleeve 4 and is formed with an linternal l groove receiving the collar 6, whereby said ing of the upper pipe section 1, is thenadapted to expand sleeve 11 as shown in Fig. 2 so that the rubber-sleeve 9 is forced srsr into fluid tight contactI with the wall of the well. When section l is driven downwardly, after the section 2 has been brought to a standstill, the ring 12 and sleeve 11 expand the elastic sleeve 9 and said ring l2 comes `into contact with the upper end of the sleeve 4. Further downward driving of the upper pipe section will now cause the sleeve 11 to buckle outwardly as shown in Fig. 2 and sleeve 9 is tliilsfurther expanded to form the required iiuidtight' packing.
I am aware that numerous packings have heretofore been provided which are operatedl by driving the well casing downwardly but in so far as I am advised, a packing sleeveor tube formed of lead or similar material tovoperate as described, is'novel. It is this devicethat constitutes the principal feature of the present invention and it will be understood that its form may be 'Varied as occasion may demand Within the scope of the appended claim.
