5 county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Mechanism for Internal- Combustion Motors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valvemechanism for internal combustion motors and more particularly to a valve of this class which is r located within the cylinderhead.
The principal objects of the invention are valve for four cycle motors in the cylinder head and over the piston in such position that the gases can be quickly drawn fin. and exhausted, to operatesaid valve byV cam mechanism and to so construct and arrange the parts that they can be easily exposed for l inspection or repair. y The above and other objects are accomplished as hereinafter described, and asparticularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which an embodiment of the invention is shown. In the drawings:

A hollow member or tube 9 depends vertically from the upper part of the cylinder head within the same and forms a bearing in which two rock shafts 10 and 11 are journaledtheshaft 10 being tubular and surf lroundmgthe other shaft 11 which is preferably solid. Y Y
Crank arms 12 and 13 extend laterally from the upper portions of the said shafts and carry rollers 14 and l5 at their outer portions, which rollersextend within and travel in the cam grooves 7 and 8.
A circular valve chamber 16 is formed d* within the walls ot' the cylinder head which chamber' isconcentric with and Surrounds the lower portion of the two Shafts 10 and 11.
Vithin the valve chamber,is arranged a combined inlet and exhaust valve which is composed of two opposed separate segmental members, 17 and 1S, mounted on .the outer extremities of two oppositely projecting arms 19 and 20.
.The inner ends of the'arms are attached to the lower portions of the two shafts 10 and 1l, so that the alternate movement of the shafts by theF block cam will correspondingly rock the segmental members.
Inlet and exhaust ports 21 and 22 are formed in the side wall of the circular valve chamber and` corresponding ports 23 and 24, are formed'in the segmental valve members. VAn outwardly extending lip or flange '25 is formed 'on each segmental member near the upperredge thereof which tits and slides 1n a-groove 26 in the'wall of the valve chamber, as Shown in Fig. 3 andthus supports the Vvalve membersy in position in said chamber. `1 Y V yThe valve chamber, itfwill be noted, `is
practically inthe form of a vertical ltube having open upper and lower ends and slots or portsin its sides,'and the valve members are movably mounted around an axis,.the
centerline of which is'vthek center vlinevo'f the cylinder.

valve chamber are bolted Or otherwise detachably secured, tubular connectionsQS and 29, which are attached to pipes leading rey ranged that the segmental valve members will open and close in their proper order.
The parts of the improved valve are fevv in number, of substantial strength and can be easily exposed for repair or replacement by removing the connections 28 and 29.
To prevent the segmental valve members Wearing a shoulder on the Walls of the valve chamber, said chamber is recessed or cut avray aft-32 as shown in Figs. 2 and d.
ln practice it is perhaps advisable to place a cover (not shown) over the cam shaft box as a protection against dirt or dust.
rl`he improved valve mechanism ycan lbe quickly dismounted by removing the cylinder head 2 and the tubular connections 28 and 29.
`This exposes the valve both on the top and sides so that the parts thereof can be easily Withdrawn.
The segmental members are preferably attached to the outer extremities of the arms 19 and 2O by longitudinally splitting and spreading the outer portions of said arms as sho-Wn at 32a in Figs. 2 and 1l, thereby' forming spring holding parts Which are iitted within recesses formed in enlarged portions 33 on the inner surface of the segmental members.
The spreading action of these split parts causes them to frictionally engage and grip the side Walls of the recesses kand thus secure the arms to the segmental members.
The tivo shafts are removed when the= cylinder head is lifted 0E and c arry with them the arms 19 and 20, thus dismantling the valve so that the segmental members can be easily removed.
The'l advantage of' making one shafthollow vand the other solid and fitting the solid shaft through the hollow shaft is that they 1 are both supported in a single bearing, are
compactly arranged and are removed from and attached to the cylinder with the cylinderV head.
Asthe segmental members are adjustably ittedfon the endsof the connecting arms they are,forcedstigherf.against the Wall lof: the valve chamber as the compressionwvithinf: ,ther-cylinder increases, thus.; producing a prattica'llv-nonljcalring valve.
From Figs. 2 and '-ll Aloe-.noted that the'se'ganental membersoverlapithe walls of the valve chamber and thus overtravel their seat, which prevents Wearing a shoulder on the same.

In a valve mechanism forinternal combustion motors, a cylinder, a head therefor and a segmental valve mechanism centrally located in the explosion chamber of said cylinder head and consisting of a stationary circular Wall or tube provided With side ports and an innersupporting groove and movable segmental valve-parts Within said tube having lips or flanges fitting in the supporting groove, said segmental valve parts bei-ng adapted to move in they same pla-ne and having their ends spaced apart.

In a valve mechanism for internal combustion motors, a cylinder, a removable cylinder head, two removable tubular connections attached to the side of the cylinder and extending respectively to a source of gas supply and the exhaust, a tubular valve chamber within the cylinder having inlet and exhaust ports, a valve mechanism composed of two segmental members arranged within the tubular valve chamber, one constituting an inletvalve part and the other an exhaust valve part, said segmental members having ports, cam mechanism carried by the cylinder head, two shafts controlled by the cam mechanism, one of said shafts being hollow and surrounding the other, arms extending from said shafts, the outer extremities of said arms being split to form spring parts and enlarged portions on the segmental members providedwith recesses in which the split ends of said arms are fitted.

In ay valve mechanism for internal combustion motors, a cylinder, a removable cylinder head, two removable tubular connections attached to the side of the cylinder and extending respectively to a source of gas supply and the exhaust, a tubular valve chamber within the cylinder having inlet and exhaust ports, a valve mechanism com posed of two segmental members arranged within the tubular valve chamber, one constituting an inlet valve part and the other an exhaust valve part, said segmental members having ports, cam mechanism carried by the cylinder head, two shafts controlled by the cam mechanism, one of said shafts being hollow and surrounding theV other, and means detachably connecting the shafts to the segmental members.

In a valve mechanism for internal combustion motors, a cylinder, a removable cylinder head, two removable tubular connections attached to the side of the cylinder and extending respectively to a source of gas supply and the exhaust, a tubular valve chamber within the cylinder having inlet and exhaust ports, a valve mechanism composed of two segmental members arranged within the tubular valve chamber, one constituting an inlet valve part and the other an exhaust valve part, said segmental members having ports, cam mechanism carried by the cylinder head, two shafts controlled by the cam mechanism, one of said shafts being hollow and surrounding the other, and arms extending from the shafts and detachably connected to the segmental members.
