The motor designated generally by the numeral 2% is mounted on the axle and supporting bar 6, by means of the brackets 25 and 26 respectively. The motor is connected to the driving shaft 17 by the sprocket chain 27, the sprocket 28 on the motor shaft and the sprocket 29 on the driving shaft. Various of the parts are shown more or less in conventional form as their structural de tails form 110 part of this invention.
lVith the parts thus arranged the machine may be trundled along the track to the point of drilling and adjusted or engaged with the track merely by dropping the supporting bar 6 thereon with the hook 9 in engagement with the rail. By means of the motor and the feed means described the drilling operations may be quickly performed and the machine is released as soon as the drills are retracted. The machine may be quickly removed from the track as occasion may require. It is light in weight and if desired the operator may step be tween the axle and supporting bar and grasping these parts lift the machine to and from the rails, or it may be manipulated to and from the rails by means of the handles 8.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which is simple and which I have found to be very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe various modifications and other adaptations which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim; as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a rail drilling machine, the combination with a pair of track wheels, an axle on which said wheels are mounted, a pair of longitudinal members extended to provide handles by means of which the machine may be trundled, a support bar mounted on said longitudinal members and adapted to rest upon the rails and provided with a rail hook at one end, said axle, longitudinal members and support bar constituting a rigid main frame, a drill frame mounted on the under side of said support bar with its outer end in a spaced relation to said rail hook to receive a rail head between, drill spindles mounted for axial movement in said drill frame and provided with spindle pinions at their inner ends, a driving shaft provided with a driving pinion meshing with said spindle pinions, said driving pinion being of such length as to permit axial movement of said spindle pinions, means for feeding said spindles, a motor mounted on said main frame, and
driving connections from said motor to said driving shaft.
2. In a rail drilling machine, the combination with a pair of track wheels, an axle on which said wheels are mounted, a pair of longitudinal members extended to provide handles by means of which the machine may be trundled, a support bar mounted on said longitudinal members and adapted to rest upon the rails and provided with a rail hook at one end, said axle, longitudinal members and support bar constituting a rigid main frame, a drill frame mounted on said support bar, drill spindles mounted for axial movement in said drill frame and provided with spindle pinions at their inner ends, a driving shaft provided with a driving pinion meshing with said spindle pinions, said driving pinion being of such length as to permit axial movement of said spindle pinions, means for feeding said spindles, a motor mounted on said main frame, and driving connections from said motor to said driving shaft.
8. In a rail drilling machine, the combination with a pair of track wheels, an axle on which said wheels are mounted, a pair of longitudinal members extended to provide handles by means of which the machine may be trundled, a support bar mounted on said longitudinal members and adapted to rest upon the rails an d provided with a rail hook at one end, said axle, longitudinal members and support bar constituting a rigid main frame, a drill frame mounted on said support bar, drill spindles mounted for axial movement in said drill frame and provided with spindle pinions at their inner ends, a driving shaft provided with a driving pinion meshing with said spindle pinions, said driving pinion being of such length as to permit axial movement, of said spindle pinions, a feed bar for said spindles, a feed lever bifurcated to embrace said supporting bar and drill frame, links connecting the arms of said feed lever to the ends of said feed bar, a motor mounted on said frame, and driving connections from said motor to said driving shaft.
4. In a rail drilling machine the combination with a pair of track wheels, an axle on which said wheels are mounted, a pair of longitudinal. members extended to provide handles by means of which the machine may be trundled, a support bar mounted on said longitudinal members and adapted to rest upon the rails and provided with a rail hook at one end, said axle, longitudinal members and support bar constituting a rigid main frame. a drill frame mounted on the under side of said support bar with its outer end in a spaced relation to said rail hook to receivea rail head between, a drill spindle mounted for axial movement in said drill frame, and a feed means for said spindle.
5. In a rail drilling machine,the combination with a pair of track wheels, an axle on which said wheels are mounted, a pair of longitudinal members extended to provide handles by means of which the machine may be trundled, a support bar mounted on said longitudinal members and adapted to rest upon the rails and provided with a rail hook at one end, said axle, longitudinal members and'support bar constituting a rigid-fmain frame, a drill frame-mounted on said sup- 7 port bar,a drill spindle mounted for axial movement in said drill frame, and a feed means for said spindle.
6. In a rail drilling machine, the combination of a main frame comprising an axle,
longitudinalmembers constituting handles, and a supporting bar adapted to rest upon the rails and provided with a rail engaging hook, track wheels on said axle, a drill frame mounted on theimder side of said supporting bar with its outer end in a spaced relation to-its said rail hook to receive a rail head between, a drill spindle mounted on longitudinal members constituting handles,
and a supporting bar adapted to rest upon the rails and provided with a rail engaging I hook, track wheels onsaid axle, a drill frame mounted on said supporting bar, a, drill spindle mounted on said drill frame'for axial movement and provided with a driving pinion meshing with said spindle pinion, said driving pinion being of such length. as to permit axial movement of said drill spindle pinion as the spindle is fed and retracted, and a motor mounted on said main frame and having driving connections to said driving shaft.
8. In a rail drilling machine, the combination of a main frame comprising an'axle,
longitudinal members constituting handles, and a supporting bar adapted to rest upon the rails and provided with a rail engaging hook, track wheels on said axle, a drill frame mounted on' said supporting bar, a drill spindle mounted on said drill frame for axial V movement and provided with a'pinion, adriving shaft provided with a driving pinion meshing with said spindle pinion, said driving pinion being of such length as to permit frame mounted on said supporting drill spindle mounted on said drill frame,
as the spindle is fed and retracted, a feed bar operatively associated with said drill spindle, a feed lever, and a link connecting said lever to said feed bar.
9. In a rail drilling machine, the combination'of track wheels, a frame comprising, a supporting bar adapted to rest on the rails l and support one end of said frame during drilling operations and provided with a rail hook, said frame beingprovided' with a handle by means of which the supporting bar can be raised from the track and the machine may be trundled along a track, a drill bar, a
