IMPRVMENT IN LADDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,526, dated March 12,1872.
Speciiication describing Improvements in Ladders, invented by GEORGE W. WILLIS, of Atchison, in the county of Atchison and State of Kansas.
Figure 1 is a side View of a ladder to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a detail edge View of a portion of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail side View of a part ofthe same enlarged.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
My invention relates to improvement in the class of ladders which are provided with an extensible foot or leg, whereby they are adapt ed to stand upon inclined or uneven surfaces. Hence I do not claim such construction broadly. The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and specilically indicated in the claim.
A and B are the side bars of the ladder, to which the rounds C are attached in the ordinary inanner. The lower end of one of the side bars, as A, of the ladder is sawn off, as shown in Figs. l and 2, so as to make one of the side bars of the ladder shorter than the other. D is a rod or bar, which may be made tubular, if desired, to combine lightness with strength. To the lower end of the rod D is attached or upon it is formed a foot, E, which may be the piece sawn from the bar A. The
rod D passes through and works up and down in keepers F G attached to the side oi' the shorter side bar A. The rod D has a knob or handle, d1, formed upon or attached to its upper end for convenience in raising and lowering the said rod. Upon the outer side of the rod D are formed teeth d2, upon which the pawl I-I takes hold to hold the said rod secure- 1y in any position into which it may be moved. rlhe pawl H is pivoted to lugs formed upon the keeper G, and its engaging end is held against the teeth cl2 of the rod D by a spring, I, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The rod D may be kept from turning upon the side-bar A by ilan ges or wings J formed upon or attached to it, as shown in Fig. 2.
By this con struction the ladder can be readily adjusted to stand rinly upon an uneven or inclined surface.
Havin g thus described iny invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The part E, notched rod D d, spring-pawl H I, and keepers F G, arranged in connection with the shorter bar A of the ladder, as shown and described.
GEORGE WV. WILLIS. Vitnesses:
D. C. NEwcoMB, E. R. DUDLEY.
