To all whom it may concern: 1

l 3 e it known that 1, ROBERT GosMAN, a

citizen of the United States, and. a resident of Amagansett, in the county of Sufiolk and State of New York, have invented a new and paste and having provision at one end for a pencil and at the other end for a combined rubber eraser, stopper and paste spreader or brush.

Another object of the invention is to provide a holder for botha pencil and a quantity of paste, the holder being provided with.

a slid'abl'e plug or follower between the paste and the pencil chamber, said. follower being adapted to be pushed. by the unsl'iarpened end of the pencil for the purpose of ejecting the paste from the opposite end of the holder.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while" the inven tion is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein,

still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is. a longitudinal sectional view of one form of my invention;

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, I show a holder 10 of tubular construction constituting a means for holding a pencil 11 or its equivalent, either for the purpose of providing sufficient length for a short pencil or as a protector for the point of the pencil when being, carried in ones pocket, The holder, furthermore, constitutes a receptacle or. chamber for a body or quantity of paste 12 or any other desiredcommodity.

As a closure for the upper end of the holder, I provide a novel construction of stopper 14, the same embodying several different functions. Primarily this member constitutes a stopper portion 15 carrying a spreader 16 having a brush-like end 17 adapted to dip into the paste to bring forth a modicum thereof for application to any desired work. The brush may be made as an integral part of the shank 16 of the StQP-s per or, as indicated in Fig. 5, it may be composed of a bundle of bristles 17 held to the shank 16 by means of a thimble 18 made of metal or its equivalent. In any event the shank 16 or 16 is made preferably as an integral part of the stopper and the whole stopper device preferably is made of flexible rubber. The outer end of the stopper device constitutes a rubber pencil eraser 19 which serves its usual functions in connection with a lead pencil. It will thus be seen that the combination stopper for the upper end of the receptacle or holder serves at least three distinct yet correlated functions, and the same may be conveniently manipulated for its several functions without danger of smearing or soiling the operators fingers. With the holder supplied, for example, with a quantity of library paste or thick mucilage, the operator may remove the stopper by grasping the eraser portion 19 thereof and while so removing it a modicum of the paste will be withdrawn along with the brush 17, and hence may be transferred thereby and spread upon any desired surface. WVhen the stopper is returned to its normal position, it constitutes an effective airtight closure for the holder, preventing the smearing, spreading or evaporation of the liquid or semi-liquid contents. The shank 16 or 16' being made of flexible rubber facilitates the spreading action above described.

As shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the closure member includes a thimble 20 having the outer end fitted permanently upon the stop per and adapted to fit over the outer end of paste upwardly toward the opposite open end of the holder, so as to be in position to be reached with the brush. This operation may be repeated when necessary so long as there is any paste left in the holder. The device is simple and cheap of construction and convenient and reliable in prac tical operation. I am aware that numerous attempts have been made to produce a practical combination pencil and mucilage or paste container and hence I do not claim the same broadly.

I claim:

1. The combination of a tubular holder of uniform cross section adapted to, receive a pencil point at one end, a resilient follower slidably fitted within the holder against which the end of the pencil is adapted to impinge, said follower being movable along the holder by force applied to the pencil, the opposite end portion of the holder together with the follower constituting a receptacle for paste, and a combined pencil eraser, stopper and paste spreader carried by the opposite end of the holder.

2. In a pencil attachment of the character set forth, the combination with a tubular holder adapted to contain a quantity of paste, of a combined integral pencil eraser, resilient stopper, and paste spreader serving to seal said paste receptacle, and a' thimble fitted upon the stopper and slidable upon the outer end of the holder while the stopper is projected into the end of the holder.

3. The herein described article of sta-' eraser stopper and brush carried by the open end of the paste end of the holder.
