IMPROVEMENT IN HORSESHOE-NAIL MACHINES.
, Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,411, dated March 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WELLINGTON WooDEoRD, of Montreal, in the district of Montreal and Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented new and Improved Machinery for Cuttingl Horseshoe-Nails and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention has for its object the production of mechanism especially adapted for cutting horseshoe-nails; and consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement ot' the cutters and bed-knives, by the jointoperation ot' which the nail is severed from the pla-te, as willA be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a view of the cutters and bed-knives; and Fig. 2, a plan and end view ofthe plate from which the nails are out.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and operation.
a b represent the cutters, and a b the bed` knives. The cutters a b receive the proper motion to enable them to operate in connection with the bed-knives by means of any suitable mechanism. The outline of the cutter aY and of the bedknife a', which corresponds with it, is adapted to cut the line x a' upon the corner of a plate of metal, as indicated in Fig. 2. The outline of the cutter b and the bed-knife b', which corresponds with it, is adapted to out the line my, as indicated also in Fig. 2.
The operation is as follows: The cutters having been given the proper movement in any suitable manner, a plate of metal is presented to them, its proper position being determined by the guides c d. The plate being iirst acted upon by the cutter a has its corner moved upon the line a: x. Its position then being changed the cutter b, which severs a portion upon the line y, the severed portion forming a blank fora nail. The pla-te itself should be previously brought into proper form, as indica-ted by the end views, Fig. 2.
By means of this peculiar construction I am enabled to cut horseshoe-nails with their long tapering points from a plate of metal-a result impossible with the ordinary nail-cutting machin ery. n
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cutters a b and bed-knives a b', adapted by their joint operation to cut from a plate ot' metal horseshoe nails with long tapering points, substantially as described.
