HENRYJ. -KpTSH- I ED STATES PA v oFFrcE.
HENRY J. KLI'I'SCH, OF EAST, MAUCH CHUNK, PENNSYLVANIA.
HORSESHOE CALK.
Specification ofLetters Patent.
Application filed March 20, 1916. Serial No; 85,501.
To all whom.- it may concern:
' Be it'known that I, HENRY J. KLITSCH, a citizen of the United States, residing atEast Mauch Chunk, in-the county of-Carbon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Horse.
shoe-Calks, of'which-the following is a specification, reference being had to :the' accomanying drawings.
This invention relates to an-improved- V horseshoe calk: and has'for' its primary object to provide simple and effective means for'securelyholding the calk in the shoe bar. It is amore partlcularobjectof the:invention'to provide an improved formofcalkv which will effectively biteor grip into the ground surface, said calk shaving a-reduced stud: formed on-one end provided with a key-receiving groove to receive a'key formed in the shoe, and a reinforcing ribformed on one side ofthe calk body in line with. said groove.
Itis a further general object? of the .invention toprovide a-device of theabove character which is exceedingly simple in its! construction, maybe readily applied in practical use by. the ordinary blacksmith, and is highlyeflicientand reliable in operation.
Withthe above and other objects in view,
my invention consists inthe navel features a of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts tobe hereinafter more-fully described, claimed and-illustrated inthe accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a'horseshoe,
partly in section, showing my. improved calk applied. thereto v the openings 6. Upon the wall of each openmg 6, at 'one side thereof, a longitudinal V-shaped rib or wedge 8 is formed.
The calk is preferably in the form of a single steel casting having a relatively wide body 9 formed with a sharpened gripping edge 10. Upon the baseofthis' calk body, a

longitudinally extending, tapering shank ll is formed;- This shank is' provided with a longitudinal groove or channel '12 conform ingin shape to the rib 8. The-calkbody 9 I gradually decreases in thickness" ortapers from its base endto the cutting-edge 10 thereof, and one side face of this' calk body iscurved longitudinally, as at 13, to provide a concave surface portion adjacent 1 the base end of sand body and aconvexsurfaceiadjacent to its cutting edge 10. 'It isto be observed that the cutting edge 10 is disposed at one side ofthe longitudinal-axisof the calk and opposite to that. upon which-the rib'or key-receiving channel 12-is formed, so that the pressure uponeach cutting edgeof the calkwillte'nd to force: the shank 11 laterally and into tight"wedging-engagement uponthe rib 8. Uponthe concave surface, centrally thereof and in longitudinal' alinement with the channel 12in the'taperingshank. 11, a
tapering reinforcing riborwveb 14 01 V- shaped form incross-section, is." '=form'ed.
This rib reinforces the reduced. side oflthe calk body and prevents bending or distortion of said body. The ribl l is also inwardly-inclin'ed with its larger: endna't'the top of the calk body 9 and flush therewith,"
said upper 'endof the rib'beingadapted for contact with the bottom face of'the shoe bar or more particularly the boss 7 surrounding an opening 6.
In the operation and use of the invention,
when the shoe is formed the ribs 8 are formed in the opening provided in-the shoe bar by means of a suitable tool; The calks are then arranged in position, the shanks 11 being fitted into the respective openings and the ribs 8 engaging in the V-shaped grooves 12. Thecalks' are tightly driven into the openings until the wider base end of the calk'body bears upon the boss 7 'of the shoe bar. In the use of the calk, the base thereof affords a broad bearing surface againstthe reinforcing boss 7 of'the shoe bar,'andthe rib '14 materially strengthens the relatively thin edge of this base portion of the calk.
The longitudinal pounding pressure :upon
the calk drives the stud or shank 11 more securely into the opening 6 intowedging engagement with the rib 8. In this manner, it will be seen that the calk will at all times be securely held in connection with theshoe bar without the necessity of employing additional fastening means therefor. The device is exceedingly simple in its construction and the calks may be very easily and quickly applied to the bar in position for use.
While I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several features of the device, it will be understood that the same is susceptible of considerable modification therein; and 1, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate modifications as may be fairly embodied Within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully describedmy invention, What I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is rr 1. T he combination with a horseshoe having a longitudinally tapering opening therein provided With a k -shaped rib on its Wall, of a calk having: a tapering shank projecting longitudinally from the calk body and provided with a Vehaped groove to receive said rib, said calk body gradually tapering in thickness from said shank to its other end rede nes and having its gripping edge disposed at one side of the longitudinal axis of said shank, and a longitudinally extending V- shaped reinforcing rib formed on the side of the calk body in longitudinal alinement with the groove in said shank, said rib being positioned at the upper portion of the call: body and inclined. inwardly with the larger sen-d flush with the upper end of the body.
2. The combination with. a horseshoe having a series of open-ended sockets; a plurality of calks, each having a shank, said shanks being each provided with a top-opening slot formed in the side -thereof; and a plurality of Wedge-shaped members rigidly :rnounted in said sockets for engagement by said slots.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY J. KLTTSCH.
