OPHTHALMIC MOUNIIN Application filed zanuar as, 1917. Serial no. 144,343.
To all whom it? may concern:
"Be it known thatI, BYRON A, Scott, a citizen of the United States, residing at ,SOuthbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ophthalmic' Mountings, of which the following A further object of the'present invention is the provision of means for the purpose above mentioned, which shall 'be so disposed as to be quickly applicable to'the frame and which will takeLca-re of any variance in the length-of the parts as assembled.
Dtherobjects and; advantages of my improved constructionshould be readily apparent by r'eferemzev to the following specification taken in connection with the accompany'ing drawings, and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific details of construction shown and described within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or. exceeding-the'spivrit 'o'f my invention. 1
Figure I represents" a front view of a mounting constructed in accordance with and embodying my improvements.
Fig. II represents a sectional view as on the line IIH of Fig. I. a
Fig. III represents a fragmentary enlarged sectional viewillustrating the attachment of the metallic and non-metallic parts.
Fig. IV represents a fragmentary perspective view of the joint.
Fig V represents a one form of end clip.
Fig. VI represents a sectional view through a slightly, modified construction.
' In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates S59 perspective view of Specification of Letters Patent.

the bridge of an ophthalmic mounting provided at each end with the metallic rim or frame member 2 interiorly grooved to 'recelve the usual lens 3. The frame' membeis 2 are preferably split at their outer ends and provided with the end piece members 4 and 5' between which is pivoted a temple 6 for retaining the mounting inposition on the face. I v
Itwill be understood that it ismy desire to equip a mounting of 'these'general char acteristics -with an improved ornamental preferably non-metallic shell or-composition rim member 7, whichshall add to .the appearance of the mounting without appreci-' ably increasing the weight-thereof, and which will have'extremely 'softor pleasant feeling when contacting with the faceof the wearer. y
--In the accomplishment of this result I preferably form the member 7 with the interior arcuate groove 8 toreceive the frame member 2 and. the beveled'wa-llsYQ adapted to fit against the lens si'ibstantially'iin the manner illustrated in Figq'll. ltwil'l thus be seen that the supplemental rim member may be satisfactorily ap lied to an ordinary frame and on account of the fit'ofthe frame within the groove it will only be necessary to secure the frame at its ends, where the same is split, corresponding to the regular frame, to facilitate the insertion or removal reference to these figures it will be seen that I have provided an improved cap member comprising the base or end wall'10 and the lateral upstanding tapering flange ,or
In use this cup member is applied to the end of the supplemental frame, as shown at the bottom in Fig. IV, and is provided with the screw threaded aperture 13 adapted to receive the screw 14 passing downwardly through the end piece and into the base plate 10, whereby tightening of the screw will securely draw the supplemental frame down againstthe main frame and securely unite it in a substantially invisible manner withthe enld piece, the sidewall 11 if desired being somewhat clenched around the sap" adapted to receive the end of the securing screw 14-, in which event the aperture 13 is preferably plain or unthreadcd and the screw cooperates directly with the plate 12 in the interior of the supplemental frame member, thus securely locking the member 12 in position and drawing it downward toward the end piece to insure tightest fit cf the supplemental frame member 7 around the main frame, this construction being specifically illustrated in connection with Fig. VI of the drawings.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and advantages of my improved device should he apparent and it will be seen that by its use. I may quickly yet securely apply supplemental frame member to an ordinary frame, may be sure of a satisfactory tight fit between the parts, as well as a neat and attractiveconnection thereof, and may open or close the frame for insertion or removal of a temple lens or the like as often as desired without anywise disturbing the coimection between the main and supplemental frames.
1 claim:
1. The combination with a lens frame, a supplemental frame-"encircling the main frame, endpiece meznhei's carried by themain frame, caps meaty-the ends of the supplemental traineand means uniting aaaaeee the caps on the supplemental trains with the end pieces of the main frame to secure the parts together 2. The combination with main. lens frame having end piece members or a sup plenaental frame encircling the main frame,
and caps fitting and securely interlocking' mental frames, of cap members carried by the supplemental frames and provided with interiorly threaded apertures, and fastendevices cooperating with said threaded apertures to secure the platesin desired relation, substantially, as and for the purpose described In a device of the character described, the combination. with a lens frame provided with end pieces, of receptacles carried by theend pieces, a supplemental frame encircling the main frame and having its ends received within the receptacles, and means tor locking the ends within the receptacles to secure? the supplemental fra me in position on the main frame. 7
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in the presence of two. witnesses.
