To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROLAND IL-RITTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box-Staying Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of machines in which a die is caused to descend upon a stationary anvil, between whicb'is placed a box and stay or other articles to be clamped together or compressed. v i
In box staying machines, such as" de-' scribed in connection with my invention, the anvil is usually of. rectangular cross section and positioned diamond-wise, with its horizontal active edge uppermost. Against this edge and contiguous surfaces the die descends and does its Work.
My invention may, however, be applied with equal effectiveness to machines in which anvil and die present round or flat horizontal surfaces between which the compression takes place.

These rods are supported close to the working edge of the die, not close enough to interfere with the normal working of the machine, but sufiiciently close to surely contact with the operators fingers if they should be in dangerous position, as shown in Fig. 4. The guard frame 10 is slidable vertically and when raised, as by contact with the operators'finger as before stated, it springs a catch, which instantly disconnects die holder t from its driving link 70, and arrests the downward movement of the die by means to be now described. V
The end of link is, which embraces pin 12 on the die holder, is cut away as shown in Fig. 3, not so'as to affect the normal raising and lowering of the die holder by the link, but so that the end of the link may be readily slipped ofl of pin 12, and thus instantaneously stop the action of the die holder with out stopping the machine. r
A bolt 13 is slidably mounted in the die holder, beneath and parallel to pin 12. Bolt 13'carries a cam face 14 which on occasion acts upon a pin 15 projecting from the end of link is to move said pin to one side, thus sliding the end of link is off of pin 12.
Bolt 13 is held out of action against a spring 16 by a latch arm 17 pivoted to the bolt at 170 in a cutaway portion thereof. When bolt 13 is pulled out, latch arm 17 is turnedfrom the horizontal down to the vertical position shown in Fig. 4, thus holding the bolt out. The latch arm is held in this position by its lower end being caught by a projection 18, see Figs. 6, 8 and 9. 7
Projection 18 is carried by a sleeve 19, turnable on the shaft 23 hereinafter mentioned and carries anactuating arm 21.
'A shaft. 23 passes through sleeve 19 and carries at each end arms 24, which also over' lay the die holder, and are provided with pins 25, which have loose hole connection pieces 10 of the before men V tioned guard frame. Spring 22 overlies arm 21 when the die holder is raised and serves to return this arm to normal position after the operation of the safetydevice, as hereinafter described.
Arm 21, connected with sleeve 19, carriesat its other end a pivoteddog, one end '26 of which overliesa lip 24 projecting from the contiguous arm 24, andthe other end 24 of which extends beside a short lever 28, and is held in .this position by a spring 29;
The mechanism so far described, except the spring 22, is carried by the die holder and moves with it. When the die, in desufiiciently to force latch arm 17 from proj ection 18, when said arm flies up to the hori zontal as indicated in Fig. 5-, resulting 1n the shooting of bolt 13 by its spring 16.
This disconnects link 1 from the die holder, as before described. Simultaneously O the serrated end 30 0f bolt 13 strikes the stationary head and prevents the further clescent of the latter to do harmto the operators fingers or otherwise. i a 7 Bolt 13 carries a ratchet toothed piece 30 on its inner end, and when the bolt is shot as just described, this serrated surface brings up against a finger 31 pivoted in the frame of the machine. At the following upward movement of the die holder, the serrated piece 30 will turn finger 31 about its pivot, which in rising will thus force bolt 13 away from it, until it is pushed out to its normal set aosition. In this outward movement of the olt, a pin 32 on the latch lever is con fined beneath a guide piece 33 and draws said lever down into latching position again with projection 18, the latter, together with the sleeve 19 and levers 21, being merely spring-held and yielding to allow the lever 17 to latch. .VVhen the latch has been sprung and the bolt shot as above described to disconnect the die holder from the driving mechanism, the following means is provided for linking it up again. j I
