RAIL-ANCHOR.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. BELKNAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Anchors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail anchors or anti-creepers for rails.
This application is a division of an application filed by me June 23, 1913, Serial N 0. 775,172 which resulted in Patent #1,228,171, dated May 29, 1917.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide an improved anchor wherein the base of the rail is gripped on both sides of the web.
Another object is to provide a simplified form of such an anchor which may be readily applied to rails already in place.
Another object is to provide an anchor wherein the load of creepage is distributed to the portions of the rail most capable of resisting the forces applied.
Other objects and advantages of-the invention will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an end view of one form of the rail anchor of this invention in place. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the anchor of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a modification of the anchor disclosed in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an end view of another form of anchor embodying this in vention. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the anchor of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is an end view of still another form of anchor in accordance with this invention. and Fig. 8 is a section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
In the embodiment of this invention disclosed in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the rail A rests upon the top of ties B to which it may be secured in the usual manner by tie plates and spikes or screws. The anchor or anticreeper comprises a body 10, which, on its upper surface, is provided with a lower jaw 10. According to the preferred construction, this jaw is adapted to engage and grip the bottom surface of the rail base at a point substantially below the web. Extending from the body 10 and cooperating with the lower jaw 10 are two upper jaws 11, one on each side of the web of the rail and each having a gripping surface 11 engaging and Specification of letters Patent.

gripping the top surface of the rail base. Depending from the body 10 and extending in advance of the jaws is a leg 10, which is adapted to abut a tie some distance below the jaws to tilt the anchor in a substantially vertical plane when the rail starts to creep. The form and dispositoin of the depending leg 10 is such that it normally biases the jaws to grip the rail base, and when it is caused to engage the tie by the movement of the rail, the entire anchor is tilted, causing the jaws to increase their bite or grip upon the base of the rail, to prevent further relative movement between the rail and tie.
If desired, in order to increase the biting or gripping action of the jaws upon the rail base, the jaws may be roughened or corrugated, or may be provided with teeth 11 and 10, as shown in Fig. 4.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the body of the anchor 19 is provided with a lower jaw 23 and an upper jaw 20, which embrace between them the base of the rail in a manner similar to that of the jaw 10 and I one of the jaws 11 of the construction shown in Fig. 1. There is also provided a depending leg 24 for engaging the tie in advance of and some distance below the gripping jaws to normally bias the anchor and to increase the gripping action of the jaws when the creepage of the rail causes the leg to abut a tie. anchor in place, especially when the leg 24 is not against a' tie, and to provide for additional gripping action, a second jaw or clip 21 is made to embrace or overlie the oppo site edge of the rail base. This extension which is a little more than a semi-circle in crosssection is adapted to fit in a horizontal socket formed in anextension 12 of the left hand section. This latter section is also provided near its lower end with a T-shaped socket 12 adapted to receive an extension 12 of the right'hand section of the anticreeper, such extension being also substantially T-shaped in cross-section as illustrated in Fig. 8. This extension is adapted to slide in said slot and in order that the parts may position with a suiiicient force to prevent displacement, I provide such extension with a small projecting point 12 adapted to engage a depression or cavity 12 in the base of the slot.
What I claim is j 1. An anti-creeper for rails, comprising a body having an upward projection to engage the inner portion of the bottom face of a rail base and having a pair of jaws, one extending over each edge of the base to grip the top side thereof.
2. An anti-creeper for rails comprising a body having an upward projection to engage the bottom face of the rail base under the web thereof, and having a pair of jaws, one extending over each edge of the rail base to grip the top side thereof.
3. An anti-creeping device for rails, comprising a clamp or bar piece of metal having inturned ends for fitting over and around the ends of the rail base or fia-nge and an unyielding body portion fitting under said base, each of said ends and said body portion being adapted to bite into said base by a. wedging action.
4. An anti-creeping device for rails, comprising a clamp or bar formed of a single piece of metal having inturned ends for fitting over and around the ends of the rail base or flange and an unyielding body portion fitting under said base, each of said having inclined portions thereon for being adapted to bite into said base by a wedging action.
5. An anti-creeping device for rails, com prising a clamp or bar formed of a single piece of metal having inturned end portions for fitting over and around the ends of the rail base or flange and an unyielding body portion fitting under said base, each of said end portions having inciined lower end edges and said body portion having an inclined upper edge for being adapted to bite into said base by a. wedginp' non. 6. 9. An anti-creeper for rails comprising a rigid body having at its upper outer corners jaw members normally gripping the opposite sides of the rail base, said aws having lines of biting contact.
10. An anti-creeper for rails comprising a body having a central upward projection on its top side to contact the middle of the bottom face of the rail-base and having oppositely directed jaws extending over the railbase and contacting the same.

A rail anchor having an upwardly projecting lower jaw to engage the bottom surface of the base of a rail only in a restricted area under the heavier portion. of the base, and a pair of upper jaws engaging the top surface of the rail base on each side of the web, said jaws firmly gripping the rail base to prevent creepage as the anchor abuts a tie.
12. A one piece rail anchor comprising a clamp or bar extending transversely beneath the rail base and adapted to engage the base only in a restricted area, and a pair of jaws extending from said clamp or bar around each edge of the rail base and engaging the top sides thereof on each side of the web, said aws gripping the rail to prevent creepage when the anchor abuts a tie.

A rail anchor comprising a body extending transversely beneath and around the edges of the railbase and having three jaws engaging the base, one engaging an intermediate portion only of the bottom of the base and. two engaging the top of the base one on each side of the web, and a depending leg for abutting a tie to cause the jaws to grip the rail base to revent creepage In witness whereo I have hereunto subscribed my name.
