FEED SHAFT.

INVENTOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT orrron. in
JOE J3. rnossnn, or CLINTON, OKLAHOMA.
FEED-SHAFT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Jon B. zen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Custer and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and use-. ful Improvementsin F eed-Shafts, of WlllCllv the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements shafts for pneumatic drills or other devices,
and has for its principal object to provide a feed shaft which is extensible.
Another object of the invention is to. provide novel means for retaining the shaft in an adjusted extended position.
A further object of the lnventlonis to provide means whereby a desired approximate longitudinal adjustment ofthe shaft may be obtained, and whereby a minute adjustment may be obtained after the first adjustment.
With the foregoing-and other objectsin view, the invention consists in the novel fea-- tures of: construction, combination and arrangement of parts,as will be more fullyde- I scribed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pneumatic drill showing the improved feed shaft operatively associated therewith,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through:
the feed shaft,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation, I
Fig. 4.- is an elevation, parts being shown in section of the extension member, and,
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the pawl.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 designates a pneumatic drill of any conventional form which, as usual, has extending therefrom the threaded stud 2, upon which is threaded a collar 3 provided with radial handles 4.
The feed shaft comprises a cylindrical tube 5 which is reduced and exteriorly threaded at one end, as at 6 and is open at its opposite end. The reduced end 6 is provided with a threaded bore which communicates with the interior of the tube, and this bore is adapted to receive the threaded shank 7 of a hardened cone shaped bearing point 8. Adjacent the open end of the tube the same is enlarged longitudinally and this enlargement is provided with an opening 9 of an? suitable len h which is extended lateral y at one en and is en PROSSER, a citi-' lalgedinto any suitable shape at its opposite en A pawl 10 of a shape to be received within f I Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 16, 191-7. Application filed April 8,1916. SerialNo.89,916.,
This pawl is provided at the end adjacent the open end of the tube with a depending finger 12 havingv a beveled under facel3, and at its opposite endis provided With a fiat spring 14 for engagement with a portion of the tube to normally'hold the finger 12 within the bore of the tube.
A shaft 15 is slidablymounted within the tube 5 and is provided with a series of longitudinally spaced annular shoulders 16, the shaft being tapered from eachshoulder to the ,next succeeding shoulder to form grooves 17 having angular faces. The outer.
endofthis shaft is threaded, .as at 18 to receive an interiorly threaded socket 19 ,By depressing one end. of the pawl.l0
the finger 12 may be lifted so as to per mit of-the'shaft 15 being inserted within the tube. I Then by releasing the pawl the finger 12,,will be caused to engage with the recesses .17 and abut the shoulders 16, the
angular face 13 of the finger being adapted for snug engagement with the tapered faces of the grooves.
By this arrangement it will be noted that the shaft 15 is secured to slide outwardly relative to the tube 5 upon a pull being exerted thereon, but is prevented from inward movement relativel to the tube by reasonof the finger 12 of the pawl engaging the annular shoulders 16.
In use, the device is adapted to be placed with the hardened point 8 engaging against some suitable rigid object and the socket 19 receiving the outer end of the stud 2 of the drill. The shaft 15 may then be moved longitudinally of the tube 5 until the drill is brought into engagement with the object to be operated upon, the pawl 10 being adapted for engagement with one ofthe grooves to lock the shaft against inward movement from this adjusted position. Now by rotating the collar 3 by means of the handles 1 the same will abut the outer face of the socket 19 and cause the drill to be fed. After the collar has been threaded aproximately to the outer end of the stud 2, the same is reversed, and run up upon the stud, and the shaft 15 moved outwardly another notch to cause the end of the extend between the fixed support A and the is provided at one end witha cone bearing point 21 and at its oppositeend"is'threadedfi as at 22 to, receive an inwardly threaded so 'ket" the 'saine'being"threaded at"'its' outer end for engagement with the exterior message-6r the tube By threading the rod 20" the" tube 5 rough or fapproxif mate adj ustinent of the device 'may be 010- From" the foregoing description taken in ifi iii l i h' t a s'qmr i raw g it is thought that the construct on and opera-' son-pf the improved shaftfwill' be under stood and while.
