UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT MGKENNA, OF WHITES STATION, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-GINS.
SPECIFICATION.
I, ROBERT MOKENNA, of Whites Station, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented an Improvement in Cotton- Gins, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Object of my Intention.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of cotton-gins in which a device is used to regulate the density and pressure of the roll against the saws, and is an improvement on a device used for that purpose, patented to me May 31, 1870. The nature of my invention consists in the combination, with the breast of acotton-gin, of one or more rollers, in such a manner that said roller or rollers shall be capable of regulating the density and pressure of the roll against the saws the object of my invention being to enable the saws to operate on the seed-cotton composing the roll more effectually and with more certainty, and also to prevent the roll from breaking or choking in the roll-box, or from being thrown out by the action of the saws.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing. l igurc I is the plan of the breast of a cotton-gin embodying my invention. Fig. II is a transverse. section of the same.
General Description. a is the breast of a cotton-gin, which breast is constructed, located, and operated in the usual manner. I) is the roll, composed of the seed-cotton in the roll-box. c a is the roller, the combination of which with breast a constitutes my invention; it is located across the opening or mouth of IOl1-bOX c, in such a manner as to enable it to press on the upper surface of the roll I). The roller 01 is hung in spring-bearings, which allow it to yield upward to pressure, to adapt it to any difl'erence in the dimension of the roll I). The seed-cotton to be ginned, when introduced into the rollbox 0, is, by the action of the saws, formed into a roll, 1), receiving from the saws a rotary motion. The roller (1, being hung in spring bearings, always exerts a pressure on the top ofthe roll b,.thus regulating the density and pressure of the roll 1) against the saws, thereby enabling the saws to operate on the roll more efi'ectua-lly and with more certainty, and also preventing the roll I) from breaking or chokin g in the roll-box c, or from being thrown out by the action of the saws.
Claim.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the breast a, of one or more rollers, (I, when combined and arranged as and for the purpose specified.
ROBERT MCKENNA.
