UNET STATS JAMES B. STEWARDSON AND SAMUEL S. STEWARDSON, OF NORTH RANDALL TOWN- SHIP, THOMAS COUNTY, KANSAS.
VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1917'.
Application filed October 25, 1916. Serial No. 127,609.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES B. STEWARD- SON and SAMUEL S. Srnwennson, citizens of the United States, residing in North Randall township, in the county of Thomas and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof. Our invention relates to an attachment for internal combustion engines and consists of a valve for regulating the supply of moisture and air to the charge mixture.
The principal object is to provide means for successfully regulating the combination and supply of moisture and air and the operation of such regulation by means under the immediate control of the driver.
We attain these objects by means of the mechanism hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings in which the single figure is a longitudinal sectional view of our improved valve.
The several parts are designated by on dinals to which reference is made in the following description.
Our valve comprises casing 4, flange or plate 5 by means of which the valve is secured to inside of dash, inside-gland 6, capgland '7. attached by threaded connection to an extension of said inside-gland, stufling boxes 8 and 9, needle-stem 10, needle 11, needle-seat 12. ncedle-seat-cutott" 13, crankarm 14 secured to cutoff 13, rod 15 pivotally secured to said crank-arm and connecting with the spark control lever by means of which the cutofi 13 is operated. I
A. groove 18 surrounds gland 6 and ports 19 therefrom provide entrance for the water into chamber 20; such water being supplied from the water jacket or other source through pipe 21. The water, the quantity being regulated by needle 11, passes from chamber 20 through opening 22 in seat 12 to chamber 23 in cutolf 13, where it mixes with the air entering said chamber through opening :24 provided therefor. A port 25 leading from the chamber 23 when the cutoff 18 is in open position meets port 26 through the casing where the same connects with pipe 27. This mixture of water and air through port 25 passes into pipe 27 by means of which it is conducted to a tube or other means of supplying the moisture or air or both combined to the intake mani-;
The
appear to be too much or too little water supplied to the charge mixture within the manifold such supply is regulated primarily by means of the needle-valve and when this is properly adjusted the operator may readily control the same by means of the spark control lever and cutolf as heretofore described. I
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In combination with an internal combustion engine, a regulating valve comprising a casing, inside-gland, needle-stem passing through a chamber in the interior of said gland and in threaded adjustment connection with said gland. a stufiing-box at the inner end of said inside-gland, a cap-gland to said inside-gland, a needle extension of said stem in relat on to a seat provided with a port therethrough, a groove between the walls of the inside-gland and the casing, port connection between said chamber and said groove and port connection from said groove through the wall. of said casing, a needle-seat cutoff in threaded ad ustment connection with said casing. a chamber in the interior of said cutoff. a port through the needle-seat opening into said chamber, and an outlet port from said chamber through the wall of said casing.
