PUMP.'
Application led February 19, 1917. Serial-No. 149,576.
To all whom t may concer/n.' f l Be it known that I, CLARENCE H. GUF- TAIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, inthe county'of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain Vnew and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
-This invention relates to a pumping apparatus, and particularly to an air pump designedl especially, although'not necessarily, for the inflation of the tires of automobile wheels, and comprises a compact, strong,
and powerful double acting pump which may be mounted upon the running board at one side/ofthe motor vehicle and protected from injury, dirt, and rain by a suitable casing inclosing the saine, the pump beingy at'all times contained thereinV and having a `cover hinged to the casing and preferably 20v Y provided witha lock. 4 l
Another object of the invention is t0 provide an air pump comprising two double acting cylinders and means' for operating Vthe pistons in the two cylinders simultaneously, and vso vprovided with directing means as to separate from the delivery pipe one of said cylinders when a'limited amount of air only is needed for use. 1 l
A Vfurther object of the invention is-to provide a simple, and strong pump for4 vthe purpose of iniiating tires comprising 'two Adouble* acting cylinders, each'of which cylindersy isV formed Vof a tubular member containing a piston, a head threaded on each end,and a diaphragm screwed intoithe cylinderadjacent each end for the seating of induction and eduction valves vwhich areautomatically opened and'closed by pressure of air as'the piston reciprocates. In addition this pumpis'so constructedthatthere will be no waste orlost motion between the operating handle and the piston stroke,` and through the arrangement of levers there is amechanical advantage not found in the pumps now in use. f Y l With the above as the principal objects 'in view, vthe invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which- FigureV 1 is an elevation of the complete l' um i'nO' mechanism within its casin and secured to the running-board of a motorvehicle, said casing being partly broken Specication of ietters Patent.
f Fig. Zluis an enlargeddetail view through a valve provided'forf cutting off the delivery of air from one of the cylinders, and
Fig. 5 isa sectional view of the valve on theV line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Y .I
Referring to the drawings, 10'indicates a support of any kind, in the present instance, being a portion of therunninglboard of an automobile. Boltedfto the running board at f-a suitable point in its length is a rectangular base plate vll'which may be mounted directly on the base 11, or, as in the present instance, placed within a casing12, the
base l'l'litting the casing snuglyas shown and resting upon the bottom, through which bolts pass into'the running-board 10. The casingis fitted with a cover`13, here shown as -hinged at 14:, and which may be secured against unlawful opening by a lock fastenedbyakey 15. Near each'end of the base v1l is affixed a pump cylinder 16, said-cylinders being arranged line or in tandem, and spaced apart, each 'cylinder Vcontaining a piston'17,
the two pistons being connected by af single piston rod 18, the'J ends 'of which are bolted to the two pistons 17. Each cylinder 16 is made of a straight cylindrical` member 19- having an exterior and 'an 1nterlor screw lthread at each end, one of which ends 1s screwed into a threaded open- Ving in the sideofV a cylinder head 20 fitting `the -same air-tight and having projecting downwardly from its lower side,-legs or feet 2l that rest upon the base 11 and are rigidly fastened thereto by bolts 22 passing through the feet and into the base 11; The `opposite endl of the cylinder'l is screwed into a threaded opening in a second cylin- 1derhead 23 also provided with feet 21 secured bybolts 22, this cylinder head 23 having a central opening therethrough fory theV passage of the piston rod V18, and is provided 'with a s'tufling gland124 to forman air-tight joint between the cylinder head land the piston rod.
Screwed into each end of the cylinder 116 is a supplemental head or diaphragm 25, each diaphragm being spaced a short distance from the cylinder heads to provide a chamber 26 between the said heads and the diaphragm, the space between the diaphragms 25 forming a run-way for the piston 17. Through each cylinder head and 23 is bored or otherwise formed a port 27 for the inlet of air into the cylinder 16. Av
similar but larger port 28 is made in therdiaphragm 25 in line with the yport 27, the latter port 28 forming a seat for an inlet valve 29 provided with a stem 30 that projects into the chamber 26 and is surrounded Vby a coil spring 31 that tends to maintain the valve always within its seat, but which will open under suction within the cylinder to permit air to enter through the port 27. Surrounding the stem 30 and spring 31 andextending between the cylinder head 2O or 23 and the adjacent diaphragm 25 is a short section of pipe 32 connecting the ports 27 and 28 for the free passage of air therethrough when the valve 29 is open.
Screwed into threaded openings in the cylinder heads 20 and 23r are nipples 33 and 34,- their outer ends carrying elbows 35 and 36 to the former of which is connected a section of pipe 37 extending laterally beyond the cylinder 16 while a second pipe 38 extends from the elbow 36 at an angle to the cylinder 16. In each of the diaphragms Z5-there is made a port 39 preferably in line with the nipples 33 and 34 and controlled by an inwardly closing valve 40 around the stem 41 of which is coiled a spring 42 that normally tends to maintain the valve in its seat in the port 39. A short tube 43 surrounds tlie valve stem 41 and spring 42 and bridges the space in the chamber 26 between the cylinder head and the adjacent diaphragm, similar to the tube 32 of the inlet valve 29.
Both cylinders 16 are provided at each end with inlet valves and outlet valves such as described, and as each piston 17 in its respective cylinder is connected to an end o-f thecommon piston rod 18, movement of said rod will cause alternate suction in one end of the cylinder and a compression inthe other end, the air under pressure passing out through valves 40 and into pipes 37 and Y casing to a vertical pipe 45 on the upper end of which near the top of the casing 12 there is rthreaded a T-coupling 46, from one branch of which a flexible tube 47 extends, and it is provided on its free end with a coupling for connecting to the valve stem kof an automobile tire. rlhistube when not in use will remain coiled within the casing 12.
The other branch of the T-coupling 46preferably serves as a means for the connection of a pressure gage 48. The pipe 45 is open from end to end' and has two lateral open-V a bearing 53 through whichfis formed a horizontal opening to receive a rocking pin or shaft 54, the ends of which pin orjshaft project laterally beyond the bearing 53 into hub 'members 55 of an operating lever56 and aiiixed to said hub by transverse pins 57. rEhe rocking lever as shown is designedto impart movement to the piston rod .18 and includes the two hubs 55 connected-above the bearing 53 by a yoke or arch-like portion 58 from the center of which projects upwardly a rectangular boss 59 for the engagement and disengagement of theioperating handle 60, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Depending from the hubs 55 are two arms 61 parallel to eachother and o f equal length and each extending downwardly normally to the horizontal line of the vpiston rod 18. The lower end of these arms. 61 are flattened and pivotally connectedeach to one end of a link 62,1the opposite ends of said links are j ournaled on the. ends of pins 63 that project laterally in opposite directions froin a collar 64 fastened by` a'pinion 65Ato the piston rod l18 ata suitable point in the length thereof.
The operating mechanism or handle dei scribed is connected to the piston red in the most advantageous manner and at such angles as to utilize all the power put into the handle 60 for moving the pistons within:
the cylinders. None of this power is lost by change of leverage and through this arrangement, the angle of movement of the operating lever is reduced te the smallest extent, it moving only through an arc of about 40o.
Preferably each cylinder issurrounded by a acket 66, the ends of whichare seated in annular grooves in the piston headsy 20 and 23 and spaced a short distance from the eX- terior surface of the piston, This space, if
desired, may be filled with oil, while -a lubricatingdevice 67 on the top. of each cylinder feeds oil thereinto to lubricate the piston. Y
The outlet pipe 38 of both cylinders may, if desired, be connected with the ,delivery tube 44 by an angular T-coupliiig 68 but preferably a coupling such as 69 is used in place of one ofthe couplings 6,8, the cou-V pling 69 having an extension 70 toward itsl quarter turn of the valve 71 will connect' in said diaphragms, anV outlet pipe from each end of the cylinder connected to a common discharge pipe, and manually operated lever mechanism connected to the piston rod for operating the pump.
2. The combination in a pump of two cylinders arranged in axial line and connected to a common base plate, a working piston in each cylinder, and a piston rod connected at its ends to said pistons Jfor reciprocating the same in said cylinders, a transverse diaphragm crossing each end of each cylinder a short distance within the ends thereof, a piston head screwed on the end of each cylnder and provided with inlet and outlet ports, an inlet and an outletvalve mounted in each of said diaphragms, an outlet pipe leading from the opposite ends of each cylinder and connected to a common delivery pipe, a standard between the cylinders, a rocking lever pivotally mounted on said standard, and a link between one arm of said rocking lever and said pistonrrod for operating the pistons.
3. The combination m a pump of two cylinders arranged in axial line, each cylinder comprising a straight tubular member having` external and internal screw threads on each end, a diaphragm screwed into each end of a cylinder and extending across the same near the respective ends, a cylinder head screwed on the outer end of each cylinder and closing the ends of the same., a piston in each cylinder movable longitudinally between said diaphragms, a piston rod connected at its ends to said pistons, inlet and outlet valves mounted on each of said diaphragms, an outlet pipe upon each end of each cylinder joined by a coupling, and the latter connected to a common delivery pipe, one of said couplings containing a valve to disconnect the cylinder of the same yside from said delivery pipe, and rocking means connected to the` piston rod for operating the pistons. l
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
