Description
W. P; GROSS. SEPARATING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FI'LED mm. 11. 1'9"- 1,242,683. I Patented Oct-9,1911,
' WILUHM R'GRoss UNITED {STATES A WILLIAM F. enossgor SEBEWAHTG,
sErARA'rmG bnvrcns;
Zc all w'hom itj'may concern. I g y Be it known that I, y ILIJAM P. Gnoss, a citizen of the United, States, residing at Sebewaing, in the county of Huron and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separating Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being' had' to the accompanying drawings.,, '4
This inventionfrelates to certain improvements in separating devices. and it is'an object of the invention to providea device of this general character especially designed and adaptedfor use in connection with a bean picker and having novel and improved means whereby the beans or the like may i be manually separated with convenienceand facility. h I v I It is also an objectv of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of-this 7 general character including a hopper and an assorting table or chute engaged withthe hopper and upon which said hopper dis charges together with means whereby said table or chute may be readily adjusted longitudinally into different inclinations or inv ntion.
pitches as the requirements of practice may necessitate.
- The invention consists; in the details of constructionand in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my iniproved separating device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantage ous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forthr The novel features or hereinafter be definitely claimed.
T In order that my inventionjmaybe the better understood, I will'now p'roceedto describe the same with reference to the accornpanyir'ig drawings, wherein-$ I i Figure 1 is a longitudinalsectional view taken through separatingdevice constructed in accordance with an embodiment ofmy' ,Fig. 2 is a b ttom plan ;view ofth'e device as herein disclosed Fig; m sechb'nai' ease-1m s ecification 6f Letters Patent. l I
as herein employed,
the invention will Patented oer. '9, 191a. A plication fi edivrarchrz, 1 917. senai'n 155,52 n I of the vertical rods broken away; and ,F 1g. ,4 is; a view in elevation of the valve I As: disclosed in the drawings, H denotes a hopper. of any desired configuration and dimensionsiand which is proin its bottom jand at an end thereof; .w1th the open-ended slot :1 extending within the hopper and alfor'ding adi-scharge open r- I :ingL The opening as. affordedhy thejslot' l is substantially: cleiined by a plate, 2 partially overlying saidopening and coacting with the. bottom of the hopper to'a fiord a guidew'ay 3 .toreceive the marginal portions {of the 'slide .valve' 4 whereby the discharge i dfia rsa d ope a'in.theihp omef h hopperH may be readily-and conveniently controlled;
" The :under hopper H is provided with the elongated resilient rods 5 arranged in parallelism and positioned at opposite sides; of the slot 1 with the end jport ions of saidrods 5 remote from. said slot suitably anchored, as indicoated at 7-6, to the bottom of, the hoppeif C denotes an elongatedchute or table of predetermined dimensionshand provided at one endwith the substantially U-shaped flange 7 the side members of; which extending long itudinally of the chute or; table. The flange? is adapted to; ex tend'within the slot 1 and serves to prevent a scattering of the-beans or the like -:clischarged through. the slot upon the chute ortable G and which would also have a tendency to interfere'with the vibration'of the chute ortable.
The chute or table Ojinadvance :ot-the flange 7 and adjacent thetopposite longitudinal; margins of the chute or table-are outwardly ofi'set, as indicated at 8 and said offset portions are provided with the perforations or openings 9 through which the free end portions. of the rods 5 are adapted to'be directed and whereby said rods 5 serve to maintain the chute or table G in applied position relative to the hopper H and'also permits'said' chute or tab'le to have vibratory movement, V 1 H I "The end pardon of the chute o table (3 intermediate the openings 9 is provided with a third opening 10 adapted to receive the an gular end portion of the elongated latch member 11 pivotally engaged with the under surface of the bottom of the hopper H at a predetermined point inwardly of the slot 1. ent to those skilled in the art to which my present invention appertains, the latch member 11 serves to effectually hold the chute or table 0 against outward longitudinal movement which would result 1I1 the dlsplacement of said table or chute.
In practice the chute or table Ois disposed longitudinally on a predetermined incline or pitch whichis insufiicient to permit the beans or the like to roll by gravity therealong but which will permit said beans to travel downwardly of the'chute as said chute is caused to vibrate by the picking action of the operators who are arranged along opposite sides of the chute. As the beans orthe like are delivered upon the chute or table C the operators push or pick the bad beansoif of the chute or table with the thumb and forefinger of each hand and which operation results in a vertical vibration of the chute or table C.
In order thatthe inclination or pitch of the chute or table 0 may be readily regulated in accordance with the necessities of practice and especially when the bottom of the chute C is substantially level, I dispose across the outer face of the end of the hop per adjacent the slot 1 the'plate 12 provided at opposite sides of the slot 1 with the vertically disposed guideways 14. -EX tending through the guideways 14 are the elongated rods 15, the lower ends of which being adapted to engage with the upper surface of the chute or table 0 at a point adjacent the hopper H while the upper end portions of said rods are angularly disposed, as indicated at 16, and adapted to be seated within the vertically disposed series of recesses 17 produced in the outer face of the adjacent end portion of the hopper. By this arrangement it will be perceived that when the angular portions 16 of the rods 15 are seated within the recesses 17, the rods 15 are held against upward movement by the pressure imposed thereupon by the chute or table C and which results insaid chute or table C being maintained on a predetermined incline or pitch.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to, be obvious that a separating device constructed in accordance with'my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvlous that my invention is susceptible of As is believed tobe clearly appar some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown-in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed. I
While the valve 4 has hereinbefore been described as movable within the guideway 3,
the same is also adapted to be positioned :vertically as illustrated in Figsil and'3,
and when so arranged said valve 4 is insert ed between the plate 12 and the adjacent end of the hopper H. The lower end of the valve has a substantially crescent portion cut out, as indicated at 18, for the passage of the beans outwardly of the chute .C under normal conditions. stood however that the valve tfmay be raised or lowered'to control the passage or flow of the beans or the like to be picked as the requirements of practice may necessitate. In order to facilitate the operation of the valve the upper end portion thereof is provided with the outwardly disposed flange 19. I j g I claim:
1. In combinationwith a hopper provided with a discharge opening, an elongated table having one end portion underlying the dis charge opening of the hopper, a flange car ried by the table and extending within the discharge opening of the hopper, saidflange partially conforming to the contour of said opening, and resilient means carried by the hopper for supporting the tablefin applied position. V
2. In combinationwith a hopper vprovided with a discharge opening, a resilient rod anchored atone'end to the hopper,, and an elongated table having one end portion underlying the discharge opening of the hop per, the underlying end portion vof said table being engaged with the free end'portion of the rod.
3. In combination with a hopper provided with a discharge opening, a resilient rod carried by the hopper, an elongated table having one end portion underlying the, discharge opening of the hopper, said table being detachablyengaged with the rod, and means carried by the hopper and engageable with the inner end of the table for holding the table against movement'longitudinally of the rod. j
4. In combination with a hopper provided with a discharge opening, a resilient rod carried by the hopper, an elongated table having one end portion underlying the discharge opening of the hopper, said table being detachably engaged with the rod, and a latch carried by the hopper and detachably engaged with the inner end of the table for It will be 'unders 1,242,683 v .v V
